This game is so close to being great. The style, the music, the feel are all amazing..... But then there's the bugs... So many bugs. So many small annoying bugs. Item's disappear. Money randomly won't stack, enemies disappear, For some reason hacking doesn't work for me anymore... I could go on... It's just not a well made game.
Played for six hours. This is totally my kind of game, so it's a real shame, but the bugs were just unbearable.
The game has incredible aesthetic and has some serious charm in how it presents itself, however the game itself has some fatal flaws. in my short time playing I had to re load my game at least 7 times to re gain the ability to move and interact with objects. On top of that this game is pretty brutal, this is the kind of game that makes guns pretty hard to use and uses chance a lot to decide whether or not you hit. This is very similar to the original Fallout game and is a negative in my eyes. I really wanted to like this game and I have every reason to like this game but I couldn't get past how clunky it is.
my friend who passed away about 2 years ago now recommended me this game, and for that this game will always have sentimental value for me. but besides that, this game i will always defend for my own personal reasons. its very ambitious, old school orientated in ways that i havent played in many games, but i dig the fact that i have to here. it really takes its imm sim approach to gameplay design like it should, to heart, and implements some very novel ideas that i wish other games legit copied pasted into their own game lol. i love how many movement options you have in terms of the interactions with windows, jumping through or opening them, locking them, shooting them, and its done in a isometric game context in a big open world with cars and vehicle combat...its so cool. i love games that shoot for the moon, even if its a rickety ship at times. those games that are in that 6-7/10 pocket, mostly because of jank, some amazing ideas and some not so great ones, maybe a middling/meandering to decent story...but its always the mechanics presented in the gameplay and the combinations of them, that keep me coming back. the closest game i can think of, that i think is also probably today one of the most influential immersive sims of all time, is actually dark messiah of might and magic. its probably the most perfect imperfect game ive ever played, and thats precisely why it has one of the most dedicated cult followings in gaming history imo. i have never seen so many people play a game so easily forgotten by a dev studio that has other extremely important games to the scene, be so fondly remembered by us all. and i think mechajammer, where tbh i dont think its AS good as dark messiah, is one of those games for me. it does things i can only find here, and thats the magic. it isnt perfect, although its in a much better state now, and is completely playable. so yes, it has problems, it will probably frustrate you with certain design choices or encounters, but i will always appreciate developeres actually creating a unique product, with a combination of mechanics, design decisions/philosophies that coalesce into something that might not really work for some, but for sure will work for a lot of others. thats why kojima didnt like everyone liking death stranding 2 at the press events. not bc he of his ego, because he likes art that challenges and isnt glazed. he wants negative takes, because he sees them as just as valuable, because art isnt supposed to be made for everyone or to be enjoyed for everyone, it is supposed to be created, and observed, and your perception of it proves the value of the work. this is why theres good, and bad art imo, but thats a separate discussion that sounds very contradictory to this point lol, but thats why the nuance of art is a multi-faceted discussion. subjectivety and objectivity do not exists in vaccums when put beside each other. if youre interested in this game, heard it somewhere once, heard it had a terrible launch.,.it aint really like that anymore. i think if you even heard of this game at all, you should give it a shot. i do genuinely really love this game, for all its victories, and its blemishes. and their new project, banquet of fools, cos im pretty sure the devs here moved on to that game, are making an absolute banger over there in indie crpg land, and that game reminds me of some of the things in mechajammer but its a entirely different experience, and its fantasy lol.
I sincerely tried to give it a chance. My 54 minutes were spent attempting to finish the tutorial, and I've failed. Clicks just won't register as interactions. At one point, one of the enemies is partially covered by foreground fence, and I simply couldn't find an exact pixel on which I should click so that the game figures out I'm trying to target it. In another room, I'm supposed to left click the NPCs so I can make them into followers. I spent literally 20 minutes slowly scanning the pixels from left to right, top to bottom on one NPC, trying to pinpoint exact spot where to click, and nothing. As enemy would be turning, I had a split second flash of targeting system actually realizing I'm aiming at something interactable, but the next split second it was gone and any clicking would just make my walk. Whenever I opened any UI, there are texture clash issues: texture of a key replaces every item in the inventory, or UI controls ("close window") get smeared all over. I'm really OK with normal jank - but this isn't jank, this is literally a broken product. I don't want to even try to invest time into stuff behind tutorial, because other reviews are also Mixed, and if they can't even get their tutorial right - yea, thanks. Too bad, gave me Genesis Shadowrun vibes, and music style is straight from first Deus Ex, Hell's Kitchen area - ie. awesome. Still .... crushed my hopes completely. Learn to f**** write code before you charge other people for your stuff, I have opensource stuff out there which is literally light miles ahead in quality.
extremely buggy, money and items disappear or become unusable randomly, forcing you to reload constantly theres a soul here, just needs dev attention
I guess mixed reviews due to people unrealistic expectations. This is an indie game so there are some bugs as you can guess, but they don’t ruin the gameplay. Game itself is highly artistic and cool. Gritty setting and palette, unforgiving battles, interesting combat system. Reminds me NOX, Syndicate and Fallout1 in gritty indie cocktails. If you are into sandboxy apocalyptic games that don’t hold your hands, hop on board, earthie
This game is a buggy mess - in my 8 hours of play I restarted the game 3 times hoping that this time I would not stumble upon any game breaking bugs, unfortunately this game looks like it was made by Bethesda. Theres alot of things that pissed me off - disappearing items (even the important quest ones), dissapearing NPCs, duplicating ammo, broken item durability, factions turning hostile for no reason, bugged merchants, terrible ranged combat, stupid controls (saving and vehicle controls), no button for highlighting loot/items which forces player to do pixel hunting all the time, and many many more little things that ruin the fun of the game completely. I really tried to give this game a chance, but seriously, I have had enough. I am disappointed that the developers of Serpents in the Staglands have made such a broken game. Too bad I cannot refund it now. Not recommended.
I really love this game. But you shouldn't buy it, even at a deep discount. It's a great concept, great design and it drips with style and atmosphere. But, the fact is, after an hour or two of putting up with minor jank because it is otherwise awesome, you WILL encounter game-breaking bugs. I was so excited for this game. It dredged up memories of Syndicate and Crusader: No Remorse / Regret. But then it just sucked. If I could get a refund I would (even though I got it for like 5 bucks). I wish the developers the best. This game had incredible potential then, in the end, came to nothing because the developers couldn't see past their amazing concept and actually deliver it in a working package. Keep going, but try harder.
I would have loved to enjoy this game! It combines two of my favorite things, cyberpunk and the occult. Or at least it tries too. I enjoy difficult games with as little hand-holding as possible and the game is exactly that. The game has a rich character creator and a fully customizable squad mechanic that would be enjoyable to fully dive into if the companion AI could handle more than four companions at once without becoming unresponsive. The game is unfinished. Stutters, visual, audio, and gameplay glitches happen often and detract from the already thin immersion the game world offers. Such a shame, my hunt for a cyberpunk occult game continues.
