Magical Eyes is supernatural murder mystery visual novel. Its about high schooler who is part of organisation that is responsible for handling incidents caused by certain supernatural entities called Variants. The story revolves about certain doll and disappearances happening around her. The beginning might give you impression that this is going to be story about fearless superhero and girl chasing him, but fortunately this isn't the case. Things calm down and everything appears mutch more nuanced, nothing is black or white. So story is rather good and it was able to draw me in. What i didn't like was how storytelling was forcefully cut into "scenes" which you select from city map. I am not sure what was purpose of this, since game is linear so you cant make choices by selecting different scene. So the fact that game pushes you to town map after every "scene" just so you can click on next one is in my opinion unnecessary disturbance. At end of every chapter there is "reasoning mode" which doesn't expect you to solve anything, it only tests out how mutch attention you paid during chapter and if you get everything right, you are rewarded with bonus scene. VN has voiceacting for everyone except protagonist. Graphics wise its bit of a disappointment. Character sprites are not bad, but they are rather simple and only few per character. Backgrounds aren't drawn, rather they are 3D renders of rather low quality. I mean there are countless amateur adult VNs in Ren'py engine that have mutch, mutch better done renders. And honestly i just prefer good old drawings over renders. This seems to be only first chapter of the story and at the end, there is hint, that its going to continue with next Magical Eyes game, but that haven't been made yet. Considering this was released in Japan in 2014 and its already 2019 and developer haven't done anything since then i highly doubt its going to happen.

Magical Eyes - Red is for Anguish is a supernatural visual novel developed by Pomera Studios and published by Fruitbat Factory. Built around a blend of mystery, horror, and psychological storytelling, the game invites players into a world where emotions possess extraordinary power. Rather than relying on jump scares or action-heavy sequences, it focuses on unraveling a layered narrative filled with tragedy, secrets, and morally complex characters. Its premise immediately distinguishes it from many entries in the genre, presenting a setting where intense feelings can manifest in dangerous and unexpected ways, transforming everyday life into something far more unsettling. The story unfolds through a series of mysterious incidents that slowly expose the hidden connections between its cast. The writing takes its time introducing key players and establishing relationships, allowing readers to become invested in their motivations before revealing the darker truths beneath the surface. What makes the narrative particularly engaging is its commitment to suspense. Every revelation feels earned, and the game consistently encourages players to question what is real, what is hidden, and how much of human suffering can be attributed to forces beyond understanding. The title's emphasis on anguish is not merely symbolic; emotional pain serves as the driving force behind much of the conflict and gives the plot a surprisingly personal dimension. One of the game's strongest aspects is its atmosphere. The visual presentation combines detailed character art with moody backgrounds that effectively shift between ordinary scenes and moments of genuine tension. The soundtrack complements this approach by creating an almost oppressive sense of anticipation during key moments while remaining subtle enough not to overwhelm quieter scenes. Together, the audiovisual elements create an experience that feels immersive despite the visual novel format's inherent simplicity. The English localization is also well handled, preserving the tone of the original script and making the story accessible to a broader audience. Magical Eyes also succeeds in exploring themes that extend beyond its supernatural framework. It examines how individuals respond to grief, resentment, loneliness, and regret, often presenting situations without easy answers. Characters are given room to develop throughout the story, and while some fit familiar anime-inspired archetypes initially, they gradually reveal greater depth as the mystery unfolds. This thematic focus helps elevate the experience, making it more than a straightforward tale of paranormal events. It becomes an examination of the emotional burdens people carry and the consequences of allowing those burdens to consume them. As expected from a visual novel, gameplay consists primarily of reading dialogue, progressing through scenes, and making occasional choices that influence the narrative. Players looking for extensive mechanics or frequent interaction may find the experience limited. However, the branching elements and multiple outcomes provide a reason to revisit the story and uncover additional perspectives. Completionists will also appreciate the inclusion of Steam achievements and collectible features that encourage exploring every path available. The game is not entirely free from shortcomings. Its deliberate pacing can occasionally test the patience of readers who prefer faster-moving stories, and some exposition-heavy segments may feel overly detailed. Additionally, because much of the experience depends on narrative investment, players who are not fans of visual novels may struggle to remain engaged. Nevertheless, these issues are relatively minor when weighed against the quality of the writing and the effectiveness of the mystery itself. In the end, Magical Eyes - Red is for Anguish stands out as a memorable visual novel that successfully combines supernatural concepts with emotionally driven storytelling. Pomera Studios delivers a narrative that remains compelling through its careful world-building and thematic ambition, while Fruitbat Factory ensures that the experience reaches an international audience in polished form. It may appeal most strongly to fans of mystery and psychological fiction, but those willing to immerse themselves in its slow-burning tale will find a rewarding and thought-provoking journey.
On one hand, the characters are good, the action scenes are well written, and the setup is intriguing enough. On the other hand, this is clearly the first episode of what never became a series. Though the main thread has enough closure, many other threads do not go anywhere, and because of that some characters which are presented as important end up being nearly irrelevant (and, as it is, a few scenes are so unconnected to the story, you have no clue why they are present). It is actually a pity, because as a setup this game is very intriguing.... but if you decide to play it, know it is extremely incomplete. Score: 63/100.
I can spend an afternoon reading a novel just fine. Really don't understand the appeal of visual novels though. Incredibly boring
A very well made story. Truly a pity that the studio involved hasn't had any news since 2017. I would have liked to see the continuation of the story, "Indigo Blue Heaven," but it seems like it is not to be.
