Maggie's Apartment

Saw a YouTube comment that called this "Rocko's Modern Life if it were directed by Quentin Tarantino" and that's bang-on, so if that appeals to you then you should probably check this out. This kind of tone isn't really for me. I clocked that right away. But whatever, the game is short. The animation is cute. I like the artstyle. Why not finish it? I thought it was a good enough time in the first half when it was Adult Swim Pajama Sam. Some of the puzzles were obtuse, but it's flavored like a 90s point and click so that's as part of the genre. The thing that turns this from "Neat but not for me" to "Oh. I wouldn't recommend this, actually" happens two thirds of the way through the game where it suddenly grinds to a halt and morphs into a detective game where you have to very seriously create a timeline for the villain's actions and motives. This does not work in a game this surreal. You cannot ask me to psychoanalyze someone in a world where I just got my innocent neighbor arrested in order to power a sex robot to blow up my TV so I could climb out a window. I found a bullet inside a cactus and traded a tooth for it. I killed someone five minutes ago and didn't even blink. It's not a serious game where I should be piecing together The Evidence. While the visuals are great, I think it's worth noting that the audio balancing in this game is... rough. Some of Maggie's lines are very loud while the people she's talking to are whisper quiet. Songs with vocals play nonstop in the background during gameplay so I lowered the volume so the characters weren't competing with the background music, but then during the emotional climax I didn't even realize a character was singing to me because her song is 50% quieter than every other song in the game. Instead of a big finale it was just us staring into each others eyes for a minute straight and wondering "Why is this taking so long?" I know voice actors cost money and it's fine if you just cast your friends for your little art game, but looking up an audacity tutorial on YouTube is free.

Such a charming, underrated game! Full of fun characters, quirky animation, nicely animated cutscenes, and an interesting story, I had a lot of fun from the beginning until the end. The drag-and-drop way to solve puzzles did take a while to get used to though. Just be aware that it's never gone on sale - I haven't heard anything about it since I originally wishlisted it in 2017, so I assume the developers just forgot about it. It's such a shame though because it really is a gem, and I wish more people would buy it and give it a chance. Btw Randy Rosebud is bae.

hidden gem of a game

One of the most excellent puzzle games ive ever played. the story was genuinely amazing and I love maggie shes actually the goat. Also I am literally duncan.

The puzzle aspects kept me engaged without distracting from the story. Overall a short game, but the fantastic artwork by itself was enough to make this purchase worthwhile.

A nice bite sized adventure game with incredible animation, fun characters and a compelling story that feels like adult Pajama Sam. Maybe I would have wanted it to be a bit longer plus there are some audio balancing issues but I would easily recommend this to any point and click adventure game fan.

Quite a lovely game! A wonderful point-and-click adventure that reminds me of old 1990s indie animations, Steven Universe, and the Triplets of Beleville. Fun, essentric characters with a lovingly made art style! Maggie is also utterly adorable. Even with a shotgun. That being said, there were two minor issues I had with the game (past the normal issues associated with point-and-click moon logic), sometimes, I felt that the conversations were a bit convaluted, overly long and purposefully confusing. Likewise, the drag and drop system was poorly explained. AKA, you're supposed to grab the item and drag it to where you need it on screen. Despite that, I found the story to be lovingly written, and quite fun. I do hope you well on your future creations!
