I have to admit that I did not get very far into this game. The issues that I had with it were just too big for me to want to continue playing, so this will be a short review. First of all, the art that's been done specifically for this game is pretty good. This is a game that's been made in RPG maker, but they've made unique art for the party members, portraits and such, and what's on display here is well made. I really liked the movement of the main character's clothes when he walked. But that's where the good parts end for me. The biggest issue I had with this game were the repeated voice lines, which were played constantly. Every time the character attacks, a voice clip plays for that specific attack, instead of the usual grunts, clangs & swoshes that tend to accompany regular attacks, and these were not short one word voice clips either. Imagine if you were playing Skyrim, and every time you attack with a sword, your character shouts "NOW I SWING MY SWORD REALLY HARD". Every single time. That's basically playing this game, you get to hear the same voice clip play time and time and time again, sometimes several times in a row as you get to make multiple attacks in a single round, and the voice lines stack on top of each other. The writing, or what I got to see of it, was also kind of sub-par. It felt a bit like reading something a teenager would write after having played a lot of JRPGs and watched a bunch of anime. It's entirely possible that this aspect gets better later on though, but the early parts did not impress. So in summary, nice pixel art, bad use of sound, and poor writing. So it's really not a game I would recommend.

6/10 About 5 hours in right now, and I wish I could say I love this game more. It's really not bad, but I'm not sure if I'll ever finish it. I bought it in a HumbleBundle with mostly VNs, so that's what I was expecting. It was a pleasant surprise to find that it was a classic-styled RPG. The first hour in, I was sure I found a hidden gem - interesting plot, cute characters, cute dialogue, great BGM (no, you can't choose to turn off SE/BGM/CV selectively, but it's not really a problem). It's been at least a few years since I played my last classic RPG, and I was immediately reminded of why I loved the genre so much before. After Retla joined the team, it became pretty clear that the gameplay was quite unbalanced. I love AP systems, where you're allocated a particular amount of points you can spend to do actions, but I feel like the game is being too lenient. With Retla and Cram's attacks, it was really easy to finish off four, and later five, enemies in one or two rounds, and I rarely took any damage. With Cram's regen skill, I never had to use any healing items. TP regenerates so quickly when you string combos and attack weaknesses, that the TP drinks were useless as well. But I'm not one to complain about a game being too easy - it saves me time that I can spend on enjoying the story after all. And if simple gameplay was the only problem with the game, I'd easily give it an 7.5/10. The boss battles. As a long-time fan of RPGs, both classic and modern, I'm used to spending 15-20 minutes in a boss battle and the frustration of losing at the end when the boss unleashes an ultimate that KOs all your characters. I love-hate the hard battles where you must adjust your attack strategies constantly. Machina of the Planet Tree has none of that. Sure, you'll spend about 15-20 minutes on the later bosses. But it's a brainless 20 minutes, where you perform the same exact actions over and over again. Pray tell, why do the battles last so long then? Oh, it's just because the bosses have an insane amount of regen - and often have self-healing skills on top of that. Hit them with a 18000 combo? Hahaha, watch as 75% of that is regenerated at the end of the turn. And if you're lucky, you'll watch as the boss heals 20% HP in one spell (while you only do 5-7% damage each turn). The bosses so far are dumb af, their attacks, strengths, and weaknesses never change. They are so easy to beat, yet have artificially inflated battle times that do nothing but waste players' times. Not everything about this game is bad though. I mentioned the AP system, which, paired with the combo system, and the special attacks, would be quite interesting if the devs had balanced the game a bit more. I also like how you can choose when to read the story dialogue in the dungeons. The character voiceovers after each fight is also quite adorable! I'm not sure if I'll finish the game, as the gameplay is too unbalanced, and frankly really boring, but I did get an hour or two of enjoyment, and it's quite worth the price that I got it at.
A game I tried to like, but there's just too much wrong with it
Initial thoughts as I got this running were: 640x480 art? Seriously? Ok, that part was an easy fix, just Alt + Enter to force full screen. Tip of the iceberg. _________________________________ The game is a typical early Final Fantasy copycat made with RPG Maker - 2d top-down random encounter turn-based RPG with a typical level-up / experience formula. Characterisation was a bit more playful than I was expecting, but after a while I got bored with it. A lot of the time the dialogue sounds like it's straight out of a VN - always teasing the guy, overuse of the word 'perv'... if you know, you know, right? By the end (or 'near' the end) you can sum up the whole story with that word. Perve. It's almost all they talk about. *yawn* So halfway through, finding out there was no character development, I was struggling to understand why I was still playing. Maybe I had some forehead notion of finishing the game. Ha-ha. Nice joke. The final dungeon Stairs to the Stars has a ridiculous difficulty spike - I think it's after the end of chapter 5. I think I was level 55, went in and tried the first portal boss and wiped in 10 seconds. After a quick look at some reviews and discussions (there isn't a lot of info to go by with this title) some people suggest level 75 before tackling it. This equates to a huge amount of boring grinding just to play more of the same gameplay. And the gameplay well and truly is as predictable as they come - a tutorial dungeon, then a dungeon broken into 4 sub dungeons, and a final dungeon at the end. Here's some added facepalms in case you still think you want to enter this iron maiden. There is an accessory slot, but there's only one accessory you can buy, and you can't buy it until chapter 6. Money is useless other than that one accessory - there are no weapons to buy (there is upgrading but it's based on a huge amount of grinding for parts). You have an armor slot too, but get this... there's nothing to replace it with! So you go into the final battle wearing your grass vest. Makes sense. The grind for weapon parts wouldn't be so bad if you could get some guaranteed drops from the harder monsters, but to truly farm anything you have to farm a whole 1/4 of the game, with a tiny little teleport entrance at the start. I should mention bosses are cheap too. Each round you do 12000 damage, the boss will heal back 10000 damage when it takes a turn. Have a boss heal 17000 per turn? Better hope you deal more than that per turn! It just keeps getting more ridiculous the further you go. Oh, and thanks to NO GEAR AT ALL you have to sit back and watch your party getting tossed around like a salad from all the status ailments - sleep, freeze, depression (yes it's a status), burn... one character has a skill for full curing all ailments on one character but in truth I hardly got a chance to use it as she was ailing from statuses as well. ___________________________________ If you've run out of real RPGs to play and you are stinking desperate to play something new I still wouldn't recommend this one. I'm not coming back to it, and I regret ever getting it in the first place. But at least it's off the backlog!
rpgmaker
Just another RPG game that you should probably avoid.
Too much is wrong with this game. It's an overpriced RPG Maker game that really misses the mark on writing, gameplay, controls, and whatnot. Don't bother.
