Maces and Dices is a turned based rogue-like where dice decide what actions you can take, but it is up to you to make the most out of every roll. When both your healthbar and available actions consist of dice, you better hope that you have brought the right ones.

GOTY 2023 10/10 would get angry at dice again
definitely interesting
This review goes in greater detail, but in general: I really like the game! Does contain mild spoilers. The game is a turn based, strategy game where you discover new moves, enemies and upgrades as you progress. The game comes with three levels. The first level focuses on the classic fantasy dungeon trope with bows and swords. The second focuses on a more explosive environment and has some interesting mechanics regarding moving yourself, enemies and objects. The third adds some new floor tiles and some unique attack mechanics and enemies. Dice define your movement, your attacks, your health - everything! A dice gets damaged by the first hit and broken by the second hit. Some rare attacks deal more than one hit. You pick up different dice as you go. Dice again be upgraded by picking up an "+" to better fulfil their purpose. The game doesn't explain much regarding tactics and enemies. Only the dice are explained. I.e. you need to constantly figure out how to approach the situation in the best way possible. I enjoyed world 1 and 3 the most. I had some issues with world 2, because what appears to be the main attacking method - bombs - feel too random due to enemy movement and the explosion radius being determined one turn after placing them. I primarily focussed on the alternative hook attack to avoid bombs completely. Especially world 3 was great fun as it really focussed on positioning once more. I feel like this game could be improved by focussing even stronger on the "problem solving" aspect of using different moves to overcome the enemy. The game sometimes forces you to reroll a dozen times before making your next move if you want to play the best move possible. This is due to some enemies being unable to reach you, but you also being unable to reach them. Maybe it would be best to cheat randomness in such cases. It's not a big problem though. I also feel like the procedural generated maps do not add as much to the re-playability as I would've hoped. After figuring out a new enemy class, you can often just run the same tactic again and again. Maybe by including small modifiers to existing enemies this can be changed. Thinking about games like Hades, where - after a certain point in the game - you have the option to increase difficulty by adding special enemies and such, something like that might be great, too. I really love the base concept of this game and feel like it can be explored even more to reach its full potential.
Really cool game! I found out about the game through the game jam version and was excited to find out that there's a steam release too! (The text below here is now obsolete because the developer fixed it yayy ^^) I would like to report a bug though; there is a game-crashing bug that happens when you place two storms on top of each other and then you step on them. When this happens, the game freezes for a while before closing. The two simplest solutions to this issue which I can think of are to either make it so you can't place a storm on top of a pre-existing one; or you could make it so placing a storm on top of another will delete the original storm with the new storm in it's place. Otherwise I think this is an amazing game with a very unique idea, really excited to see what other projects you come up with! ^^
A lot has happened since the competition! I havent figured out how to counter all enemies, nor use all dice yet, but Im really enjoying level 3 +Its beautiful!
