M.O.O.D.S. is a rogue-lite shooter where emotional robots battle it out with unique abilities, vibrant graphics, and addictive gameplay
M.O.O.D.S., the latest offering from Sticky Stone Studios, is a delightful quirky rogue-lite shooter that puts a whole new spin on the phrase "emotional baggage." In this game, you're not just managing your feelings, you're blasting them at enemies in a technicolor robotic wonderland.
The Good, the Bad, and the Emotional
The story has you playing as a robot with an addiction to emotions. But instead of binge-watching on romantic comedies, you're channeling those feelings into combat prowess with each emotion bringing its own unique flair to the battlefield. Feeling proud? Slap on that reflection shield and strut your stuff. In the mood for love? Turn your enemies into allies faster than you can say "robotic Romeo." Sorrow, as the name implies, might be a downer, but it comes with a silver lining in the form of a mechanical mutt to keep you company. Joy summons a friend because misery might love company, but happiness demands a party. And if you're angry? Well, let's say berserker mode isn't just for Vikings anymore. There are so many emotions to choose from that you'd think you were in a mid-life crisis. On the gameplay front, you start by selecting your robot and customizing its traits, abilities, and weapon loadout. The game features conveniently placed portals that allow you to choose areas where you can earn rewards, perks, or visit shops.Once you're ready, you dive into the action, which takes place in compact arenas designed for fast-paced, thrilling encounters.
Peek-a-Boom
Battles in M.O.O.D.S. rival the best action scenes for a shooter. Picture a fight scene from Star Wars, but viewed from above, complete with lasers, explosions, and smoke swirling everywhere. You can even use the environment to your advantage, ducking behind obstacles and taking quick shots at your enemies like a game of peek-a-boo. As for the enemy AI, they’ll try to flank you, but their armor is so thin that you might as well be using a BB gun as a few well-placed shots will send them packing faster than a stormtrooper at target practice. The visuals, as you can see from the screenshots, are a feast for the eyes, serving up a bright and stunning look that's as vibrant as the emotions you're wielding. Each robot, for example, sports a unique color tied to its emotional trait, turning the battlefield into a moving rainbow of mechanized mayhem. Additionally, the game's environments are rich in detail, featuring lush foliage, dense bushes, and occasional barrels that explode when shot. This style evokes an abstract painting of a robot apocalypse, where broad brushstrokes create a world in which every explosion bursts with emotional intensity.
Soundtrack to a Robot Uprising
Controls are generally intuitive and smooth, supporting both mouse/keyboard combos and standard controllers. While many might argue that games like this are best played with a controller, I found the mouse and WASD keys to be more precise for aiming and movement. The game allows players to map keys and buttons to their preference, though the default setup works well straight out of the box. However, players accustomed to games like Halls of Torment or Vampire Survivors might find the lack of an auto-shoot option disappointing. On the bright side, the sound design is a perfect match for its vibrant gameplay. The upbeat music synchronize well with the on-screen action, enhancing the overall, well, mood. Sound effects, from laser blasts hitting metal, to explosions, are satisfyingly impactful, creating a palpable sense of impending doom, especially when bosses launch their attacks.

Love Me. Love Me Not.
Overall, the game offers high re-playability thanks to its randomly generated levels, ensuring no two playthroughs are the same. As you gear up to dive into M.O.O.D.S., prepare for a whirlwind of emotions, explosive action, and a colorful cast of robotic characters. This game is not just about shooting; it's about feeling every blast, every moment, every defeat, and victory. So, wear that heart on your sleeve with pride and get ready to experience a game that's as heartfelt as it is exhilarating. Just remember, if your robot starts crying oil during an intense battle, that's either a sign of a deep emotional affection or some serious malfunction. Either way, keep a tissue and a wrench handy. Pros: -Tight and Intuitive Controls: Smooth and customizable, with a default setup that works well. -Sound Design: Upbeat music and impactful sound effects enhance the gameplay experience. -High Re-playability: Randomly generated levels keep the game fresh. -Fun Factor: Unique robot abilities and a vast selection of weapons and upgrades. -Unique Selling Points: Emotional traits of robots add a distinctive twist. -Vibrant Graphics: Bright and vibrant visuals added with expressive art style. Cons: -Lack of Auto-Firing: The absence of an auto-firing option might disappoint some players. -Small Combat Areas: While suitable for quick battles, the smaller scale might not appeal to those who prefer more open-ended -areas to explore If you enjoyed this review, visit us at WalaWalaGames for more insights and laughs!
I struggle writing a long review, so let's just keep it short: I met this game and its devs at Gamescom 2023 and it immediately caught my eye. Particularly the promise of "Bullethell" and "Rogue-Lite" lured me in like a starving fish chasing a hooked worm. And boy do I not regret biting down on this bait and following it all the way until today. The game is about robots and their different emotions. Each emotion is represented by a certain kind of ability and starter weapon. And that's really all there is to know for now. The bullethell feeling is good. Bosses and encounters in general vary in difficulty but, especially now, I rarely find the game to be "too easy" or "not fulfilling". The bullethell quickly starts increasing in severity as you move through levels, and encounters become more challenging, particularly in small rooms. There are multitudes of weapons to buy and unlock, and tons of addins to keep each run interesting. There are many viable builds and it's really just fun trying out different weapons and builds, and discovering synergies or unexpected interactions. I highly recommend the game to anyone who feels equally excited about hearing words like "Bullethell" and "Rogue-Lite", and I'm very much looking forward to future updates.
It a fun game that I can play with friends in Local-Coop. Grab a controller and join in!
First impressions of Early Access are pretty good. Combat is fun, the rooms feel varied enough as you go through that each run feels unique. I do think some of the weapons could be a bit more accurate, but finding new weapons hasn't particularly been a problem. Graphically, the enemies are properly robotic. Your character changes based on the moon selected, though they do look essentially the same minus a color change. Permanent upgrades come at a nice pace, so you'll always feel like you're making progress I think. The character upgrade system is tied to the mood you choose, which I guess makes sense.. But at the same time it feels somewhat strange. I almost feel like it'd of been a better choice if the level up selection was standard with one off-shoot specific to the moods. Either way I suppose it won't take more than 1 or 2 runs to decide on which Mood you enjoy playing the most. So it's not a huge issue. Off to a great start though, and I'd expect it's only going to get better.

's okay.
Really should still be in early access. I encountered multiple bugs including one that softlocked a run (
killing final boss while it was in whirling giant swords mode
) Besides all that roughness it's a simple but fun twinstick shooter roguelite, not a bad game.
massively underrated gem
Very fun little roguelike game with a charming and cool universe to explore.
Also von mir volle Kaufempfehlung! :)
