The double jump doesn't work properly for sometimes it won't happen even though you press the button, and this certainly will cause some extremely infuriating situations. To make sure it wasn't skill issue I made a quick research and found other players having the same problem. I'm really disappointed because I was looking forward to this game after I first saw a small video about it on YT. I really don't like to give negative reviews to games like this, the game has beautiful 8-bit like pixel art, it's a nice call back to the classicvanias of the NES era but the double jump issue ruined my experience, because of it finishing the game turned into a chore. Avoid this game even if it's on sale.
Ninja Vania II Electric Boogaloo Lords of Exile is a pixel art homage to NES era actions games. The whole game takes place in a 2D environment where all you can really do is move, jump, and attack, but the game decides to also incorporate Castlevania style elements with bosses dropping orbs that give you new abilities. These abilities are required to make it through the next areas, but with the exception of the double jump, they don't really change how the game plays much. There is an upgrade that increases your sword attack power, but you don't encounter any of the same enemies before and after, so it doesn't feel any different, it really only changes the sword swing color. All told, it took me about an hour to beat the game, and then another hour to complete a second play through with a newly unlocked character. If you're into arcade style action, want something similar to Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania, you'll probably enjoy this game, but it doesn't have a whole lot to it, and I think the story is trying to be a lot more than it is. Solid short cheap game. Note: I've seen some downvotes due to the controls for the game, so I wanted to address them. First, this game is aping the control mechanics from the Original Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania games, which means that it is slow, stiff, and difficult to execute. Without a doubt, this will lead you to die a lot until you really nail the execution, and some deaths even after. However, these controls aren't poorly implemented, they are based on older games that had less allowances on inputs. These days, games often have input buffering, coyote time, and quick input responses. These are undoubtedly improvements on controls and makes games feel much better, so it's fair to not like these controls; however, these aren't BAD controls, just old controls. This is all to say, you don't need to like these controls, it's fair to dislike them, and I won't say that I LOVE that they chose to implement such frustrating control limitations. I DO want to say that this wasn't an oversight or poor programming, it was a design choice to truly emulate old school games and difficulties. Keep that in mind if you're interested in this game. It will feel remarkably similar to playing an actual NES game.
I would love to give this a thumbs up - I love linear platformers. This Castlevania clone is fun, the levels are pretty, and the story is whatever. But what sinks the game is the awfully unresponsive controls. The double jump, for example, is very hard to execute successfully in sequence and, when we need it the most (like during the final boss), it makes us lose many attempts. It's a pity. On the flip side, though, I paid about $2 USD for it, so I guess I won't regret it.
its fun
old school total so vai.....
I would like to give it a thumbs up because there is sure fun to be had but like some comments already mentioned: The double jump only works half of the time, which gets annoying in boss fights. And this game is out for 2 years and it's not fixed. Otherwise pretty fun
The game is quite good. The music is fantastic. It's short and the bosses were fun.
i myself am tired of indie games that are just Reference to Thing
