Lonely in the Winter, developed by SoyeR and published by Araplay, is a retro-inspired turn-based RPG that centers on a deeply personal story wrapped in classic pixel-art presentation. Rather than telling a grand tale of empires and world-ending gods, the game narrows its focus to one man’s desperate struggle against fate. You play as Robbery “Rob” Cold, a former soldier whose life has been defined by loss. After his wife dies from a mysterious illness, his daughter begins to show the same symptoms, driving Rob to pursue rumors of a legendary crystal said to possess miraculous healing power. This emotional foundation gives the adventure a grounded and intimate tone that sets it apart from more bombastic fantasy epics. The narrative unfolds through exploration of snowy towns, hostile wilderness areas, and dungeon-like environments. While the plot remains straightforward, it is driven by Rob’s determination and the hope that somewhere in this cold world lies a cure. Dialogue with NPCs provides context, side stories, and occasional humor that softens the otherwise melancholic atmosphere. The storytelling style leans toward simplicity, allowing the emotional stakes to remain clear and direct. Although the script occasionally feels modest in scope, the sincerity of the premise carries the experience forward. Gameplay is structured around traditional turn-based combat reminiscent of classic JRPGs. Battles occur through menu-driven commands, with players selecting attacks, skills, and items while managing health and resources. The combat system is accessible, making it easy for newcomers to understand, yet it includes enough tactical considerations to keep encounters engaging. Regular enemies can often be handled efficiently, but boss fights demand more careful planning. Managing skill usage, preparing equipment, and understanding enemy attack patterns become essential in these higher-stakes encounters. The inclusion of selectable difficulty levels allows players to tailor the challenge to their comfort, broadening accessibility. Exploration plays an important role in pacing. The world contains optional areas, hidden bosses, and secrets that reward curiosity. Players who choose to thoroughly search maps will uncover additional content that expands both gameplay and narrative depth. Puzzles occasionally appear in dungeons, breaking up combat with environmental challenges that require observation and logic. These segments are generally straightforward but help vary the rhythm of progression. The game’s compact size ensures that exploration never feels overwhelming, though it may leave some players wishing for a more expansive world. One distinctive feature is the ranking system applied at the end of a playthrough. Performance is evaluated based on factors such as combat efficiency, completion time, and the discovery of hidden content. This scoring mechanism adds replay value, encouraging players to revisit the game to improve their rank or uncover missed secrets. It subtly shifts the experience from a one-time narrative journey into something that can be optimized and refined across multiple runs. Visually, Lonely in the Winter embraces a nostalgic pixel-art style that evokes the feel of classic console RPGs. Snow-covered landscapes dominate the aesthetic, reinforcing the cold and isolating tone suggested by the title. Character sprites are expressive within the limitations of their resolution, and environmental details add charm without cluttering the screen. The soundtrack complements the atmosphere with subdued melodies that emphasize melancholy and determination rather than grandiosity. Together, the visuals and music create a cohesive retro ambiance. Despite its strengths, the game’s relatively short runtime may leave some players wanting more depth. The narrative concludes decisively, but the brevity of the journey can make the world feel smaller than its premise suggests. Additionally, occasional technical or performance issues may momentarily disrupt immersion. However, these limitations are balanced by the focused design and clear vision of the project. Ultimately, Lonely in the Winter delivers a heartfelt and compact RPG experience that prioritizes emotional storytelling and classic mechanics over scale. Its combination of traditional turn-based combat, light exploration, and replay-oriented ranking system makes it a solid entry for fans of retro-inspired indie RPGs. While it may not reinvent the genre, it succeeds in presenting a sincere adventure grounded in personal stakes, offering a concise yet meaningful journey through a frozen world defined by loss and hope. Rating: 7/10
Bom jogo.
I give this game a 9/10 it is short game play mae and hour or so and has a great story just wish it was longer
Since i forgot to write a review for the original release, let's make one for the bday update ;) This game is a simple, yet kinda fun game, albeit short there's all you want in a "simple" RPG - puzzles, collectibles, challenges. You can even select the game difficulty, and at the end of the game it rates your overall performance :) The updated version includes more backstory and cutscenes, a few more puzzles and 2 new achievements. If you've played it already, i recommend replaying it for the new content. If you have yet to play the game, what are you waiting for? it's not even expensive to start with.
