This isn't a bad racer but it's very rough and could really use some polish. Unfortunately, it's already been out on Quest for many months so I fear it's probably not going to get any. Let's go over some pros and cons...
The Good:
- Hanging out with Akko and the gang in VR is pretty great. You can walk right up to them, headpat them, whatever. They have voiced lines in Japanese or English and there are story bits in between each race.
- Flying feels pretty good, for the most part. Good handling, good sense of speed, overall it can be fun.
- Broom customization is decent even though the only stat that really matters is Top Speed so just get the fastest broom and crystals. The Handling stat seems particularly useless since you just point your controller in the direction you want to go and you snap to that direction. I honestly don't think it has any effect.
The Bad:
- Once you get a fast broom, the ghost races are basically impossible. The ghost spawner is so close to you that ghosts spawn right in your face and can't be reacted to. To fix this, the ghost spawner should be moved much further down the track.
- In training stage #9, Sucy World, there's a warp gate that teleports you to an IMMEDIATE sharp left turn. I couldn't even see it without checking my recording. When you're playing, it just looks like the track disappears once you exit the warp gate. This needs to be fixed. It feels horrible to play.
- Some of the obstacles are MASSIVE and block the entire track. What's the point of an obstacle that's unavoidable? Even if you can avoid it, they block your vision and make it hard to prepare for what's behind it. The obstacles in general are fine but a lot of the larger ones should be toned down in size.
Would Be Nice:
- The environments look great and flying is fun. I'd really enjoy a Free Roam option to just fly around the maps.
Overall, it's not bad but with just a little more polish it could be a really fun little racer. If nothing else, get it on sale just for the story if you're a LWA fan. If you want to check out some prelaunch gameplay, I have a couple videos here:
