About
Empty streets between soulless buildings… Structures that feel familiar yet alien… And the feeling that something is constantly watching you…
Liminal City is an exploration-focused psychological horror and liminal space experience in the ultra-realistic VHS style, developed with Unreal Engine 5. As you navigate the relatively "safe" streets of Backrooms Level 11, reality can suddenly shift and you find yourself in unexpected levels. Is there an escape? Or is this your new reality?
Ultra-Realistic Atmosphere: VHS aesthetics with creepy analog horror details, developed with Unreal Engine 5.
Realistic Camera Movements: Realistic camera movements that allow you to experience the first-person perspective in the best way possible.
Dynamic Level Transitions: You could be dragged into a different Backrooms level at any unexpected moment.
Psychological Horror: Every moment you think you're safe, you'll realize something's wrong.
Mystery and Exploration: Secret passages, strange events and anomalies await you in the depths of Level 11.
You may think you're alone in this world. But in the shadows, there are those who notice you. Some just watch you, others want so much more. No matter how far you walk, are you really getting closer to the exit, or are you getting closer to them?

Silence no longer provides peace. Are the footsteps echoing in the void yours alone? The hums sometimes approach, sometimes recede. It's as if someone watching you is holding their breath. Even silence follows you here. Now you know... you're not alone here.

Bruh, let me remove the fisheye lens and chromatic abberation. The game is borderline unplayable for me. It makes me motion sick, and this is coming from someone who can play VR for hours without feeling motion sick. Please just add settings to turn it off.
As someone who initially played the demo but was very disappointed in it, I really wanted to enjoy this game. I genuinely did, as I can tell the developer has put a lot of effort in attempting to create something that serves as a tribute to Kane Pixels, The Complex Games, and Dreamcore. However, while the game visually looks amazing and some of the sound design is well done, there is still some significant issues that make the game really hard to enjoy, at least for me - though I can tell by other reviewers that i'm not the only one who feels the same way. I think one of the biggest issues for me is the fish eye and head bobbing effect. I had to turn off some of those settings because it was making me motion sick, and I usually am not the type to get motion sick, especially over a game. Second, the bacteria entity encounter needs some work. Once I got the flashlight, and you could hear him screaming in the background it genuinely got me scared for a minute. But once I found out that he's nearly impossible to out run, and the only way you can seem to get around him is by getting him stuck on the lamp post, that really ruined the creepiness/scare factor for me. I'm not even sure if that's what you are supposed to do in that part of the game. If you're going to include a chase scene in a wide open area, at least allow us a chance to outrun the entity or maybe give us a place to hide so we can get to the exit. Again, not really sure what we were supposed to do there but that portion really ruined whatever buildup the game was trying to get for me. Lastly, everything just feels really repetitive, difficult to navigate, and it feels like a lot of back peddling. I get that the focus is on the city and the idea is to wander around and explore, but after a while of trying to figure out where to go it just gets really boring and frustrating, and I say this as someone who loves to explore in backrooms games like Dreamcore and the complex - environments in this game are just not that visually interesting and a lot of the same thing, not really creating a reason to want to explore more. It just needs a bit more variety in the physical environments. That being said, It is clear the developers put a lot of time and effort into this game and I still give them credit for at least trying, and as I stated earlier the game looks fantastic visually, and I really did enjoy a lot of the sound design. Its just some of the ideas they were trying to work with didn't stick and need to go back to the drawing board - so absolutely no hate to them whatsoever. In my honest opinion, this game needed more time in the oven. A very solid effort but it needs a bit more OOMPH.
This was a really good effort. It had it's faults but I enjoyed it. There was a good balance of liminal exploration and the use of entities. The entities were not obnoxious and added to the experience. The graphics were pretty good. It was a little frustrating at times trying to figure out where to go next and the game needs to be optimised better. What I will say though is, the game needs more content for the price. It is currently far too short. It doesn't really have any replay value. I liked what there was of it but, I hope more is added
I really wanted to like this game. But it's not very good. The level design isn't intuitive, there's no real challenge to it, and the fish eye lens is awful to look at. このゲーム、すごく気に入りたかったんだけど、あまり良くなかった。レベルデザインは直感的じゃないし、やりがいもないし、魚眼レンズの見た目もひどい。
This game has made my personal Top 5 Backrooms/Liminal Spaces games. If you enjoy these types of games then I recommend you give Liminal City a shot. I usually do not like it when entities are present, but I think that the developer did a good job of not overdoing it without ruining the liminal atmosphere.
Very few games of this type capture the "liminal" feeling correctly... this isnt one of them. Its not really different levels, moreso: "Youre in the city, get to parking garage, get back to city again, get to parking garage again, get to supermarket, get to parking space with a boring and unnecessary monster, get to city again" etc. I personally gave up 1 hour in, reaching a level that seems to have been only stairwells. You CRAWL stairs in this game at a snails pace, it might have taken hours to get through that just because of that. Also the lack of options that are so important for this type of game: No run-toggle, and no filter options, fish-eye lens, dirt on lens, 3:4 ratio and other effects are permanently on and very annoying. I can forgive these games for being just boring sometimes, but i cant forgive the lack of essential options that ruin a gameplay experience. I gave it a real try for a full hour, but will request a refund, almost 10 clams for this is absolutely not worth it. Even for free i dont think i would have bothered trying the stair-part before uninstalling.
80% of gameplay involves wandering through same repeating mazes mostly boring, I wasn't even able to close pause menu, game is still too raw to be anywhat playable
Eh. Aimlessly wandering with rough controls, rougher camera, and great motion sickness (I think that's on purpose). There are other places my money should be spent.
different enough to stand out amongst its peers. roughly half-way through (i think) and i'm intrigued enough to continue playing and likely completely the game. fans of backrooms games will enjoy this one for its decision to focus on levels other than the poolrooms, playrooms, and the lobby (although there IS a lobby section - the dev does a decent job of making their version stand out). all of that being said, it would be hard to recommend this experience to someone who is not familiar with or used to playing backrooms games (my wife, for example, loathes them and loathes when i play them). for a backrooms game: 8/10. for a liminal horror game 7/10. for a pc game: 6/10 (a slight yet noticeable improvement from the genre as a whole). update: dev! you need to add a checkpoint for the poolrooms...i exited the game after progressing through the pool rooms (assuming it was a new level due your announcement stating as much as well as the achievement which is identical to all other level unlocks) but when i restarted the game, my most recent checkpoint is for the mall and NOT the pool rooms... very tedious to have to replay TWO of the levels which have environmental factors that prevent you from the player from running most of the time. if i was in a worse mood - this would've triggered rage-quit-refund. please fix Asap!
