Trick Me Once…
Winter hibernation hit me hard even before winter actually started…But now I am ready to return to reviewing. At least I think so. My writing skills are a bit rusty right now, so please, bear with me – I will do my best to describe all important parts of Liar Trick -Psychological Crime Mystery- while keeping it short and fun. A pinky promise. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2301337546 Pros:

The idea. If you are a big fan of criminal shows that involve psychology and similar topics, like The Mentalist, Criminal Minds or Lie to Me, then you will definitely enjoy the gameplay. By the way, I found this visual novel pretty educational too – it gives you a lot of facts and info about various books, people or techniques connected with the craft;
Unique and interesting gameplay. I will talk about it more in the second big part of the review, but to cut a long story short, Liar Trick combines not only mechanics common for the genre, but also its own unique additions that have not been used before. And this mix works really well;
Characters’ design. While I do have some questions about Aska’s costume – in particular, why the heck does she look like a character from Japanese fighting games? – in general, all characters have their own unique features and look really good. Their sprites are also animated, which is a neat detail that catches your eye immediately (though, only the main characters have this feature);
The game is quite long. Even the first case - the Prologue - takes at least 5 hours to complete (almost 8 in my case because I wanted to get a perfect score), and there are three more to solve;
Pretty good music. There are not that many tracks, but they are not annoying or distracting, so I would say it benefits the game, even if a little bit.
Meh:

I am not a big fan of edited photos as backgrounds. But I also understand that they are cheaper and faster than drawing everything or outsourcing an artist. So, this part should not be considered a direct con, in my opinion;
Writing. Do not get me wrong– I did enjoy the story itself and how it was presented, so the writing is definitely not bad. But there are some translation issues I will talk about below, and the text itself feels dry at times. Be ready to read a lot of scientific data connected with psychology of lying. I love this side of it, but can also understand why some players might get tired or bored.
Cons:

No screen resolution settings. You either have a small window or a full screen, which is toggled only by Alt+Enter as there are no options in the game menu itself. The text looks somewhat blurry in the fullscreen mode. There is also no Exit button (or I did not notice it at all), so you will have to minimize the game to the window every time you decide to quit it;
Very limited game settings in general. There are only 3 types of speed for the text, several variants for sounds/music and 2 options for screen scrolling. Nothing else. Maybe I have become too spoiled by more sophisticated VNs over the years, but it looks like a lackluster selection for me, at least by modern standards. At the same time, I think it might be so limited because of the engine itself (Unity);
Problems with the translation such as various (but mostly small) grammar and vocabulary mistakes here and there – missing articles, plural endings and words, typos, punctuation, verb forms, not-capitalized pronoun I (which really rubs me the wrong way), etc.; some parts also sound…how to say it…stiff? What I am trying to explain here is that the text was most probably written by either a non-native speaker or a person who was not attentive/eloquent enough, and it is noticeable in some parts. I did not have any issues understanding the sentences, mind you, so it is just a stylistic thing for the most part unless you are severely bothered by any mistakes.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2301351911
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it Phoenix?!
Before writing this review, I asked my Steam friends what aspects of the game they were interested in, what parts I should pay more attention to. One of the common questions was whether or not Liar Trick is similar to Ace Attorney. The thing is, I did play Phoenix Wright before, but a) it was really long ago (I have a copy of this trilogy on Steam too, but have not had time to complete it once again); b) I have forgotten a lot of things about it. This makes it difficult for me to answer the question. But there are indeed some details I can describe: first, Liar Trick also has a health bar. If you make a mistake, it decreases – if it drops completely, you lose. Second, there are several stages during investigation, which is similar to Ace Attorney, but have a bit different aim and execution – you are not trying to protect anyone, you are exposing lies. There is no physical evidence to examine, too. To be honest, I associate Liar Trick with Danganronpa series more than anything else, surprisingly. This visual novel and the Ultimate-Trap-In-School has similar ideas about lies and detecting them, but very different tricks. While Danganronpa focuses on what is said, Liar Trick pays a lot of attention to how it is done. Here you will need to look at facial expressions of people, their reactions and movements to understand whether the culprit is lying or not. To me, this is an amazing game feature as I absolutely love detective stories, investigations and murder mysteries of all sorts. It can be very overwhelming at first because there are a lot of things to keep in mind, but as soon as you practice all tricks for some time, the whole process of deducing lies becomes just so engaging! And the last game I find similar to Liar Trick is Professor Layton. Again, I played it long, long ago on my mobile. And again, the ideas are similar, but the way you conduct investigation is still different. If Professor Layton has puzzles and adventure-style exploration, the visual game in question is all about interrogations and deduction – reading and speaking, in other words. Oh, and by the way, in Liar Trick YOU will have to lie at some points too. I do not remember either of the three games above having the same feature. So, we can consider it a unique part of this visual novel, along with the facial expressions and gameplay connected with them. Another interesting thing is that you get small rewards for consecutive correct answers – characters will tell you a bit more about themselves or some interesting books connected with the topic. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2302778805
The Verdict
To sum up the long text above, I think Liar Trick -Psychological Crime Mystery- is an interesting game that will be a real treat for fans of solving crimes and debunking lies. It feels like a budget version of Ace Attorney, Danganronpa or Professor Layton – or The Mentalist, if we compare it to TV shows - while still being unique in its own way. I found the gameplay fun, if a bit overwhelming at first due to the sheer amount of information you need to keep in mind; but it is really worth it to continue playing and learning, trust me. The cases are elaborate and the characters are well-written (and have their own secrets). Also, Patrick is an extremely charming protagonist, so it was extra fun to help him investigate the crimes. All in all, I can recommend Liar Trick -Psychological Crime Mystery-, but only if you are not too bothered by the problems with translation I mentioned above. And as soon as the text gets proofread and corrected, there will be no reason to skip this really good detective story. Liar Trick is a mystery visual novel with gameplay focused on analyzing facial expressions to detect lies. The gameplay is a unique and interesting take on the detective genre; however, issues with the UI and the recently added English translation can add frustration to the experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8vsQymO7BE Liar Trick is primarily based on the work of Paul Ekman, who posited that there are universal facial expressions that indicate particular emotions, and by observing subtle minute changes in someone’s expression, it’s possible to tell whether they’re lying or being truthful. The gameplay mainly consists of watching a suspect’s face and identifying the emotions displayed, choosing which responses were suspicious and should be investigated further, and answering multiple-choice questions to solve the mystery based on the information you’ve learned. Of course, facial expression analysis is simplified and fictionalized for the sake of the game, and Ekman’s theories are controversial, to begin with. But the developer obviously put a lot of research into this project and shows their work, citing several resources to check out if you’re interested in the subject. The focus on small details of facial expressions can lead you to lose sight of the broader mystery, but the extensive backlog helps. You can not only review past conversations but also click on shortcuts to jump to detected facial expressions when you’re trying to remember which reactions were suspicious. Solving the mystery is hands-off compared to the facial expression tutorials, even with the hints given in earlier episodes, so being able to work it out yourself is very satisfying. The presentation is clearly the effort of a small team trying to do the best they can with limited resources, and they make it work. The stock music is unremarkable but fits the mood. The character art is mismatched; main characters have animated 3D sprites, secondary characters have 2D side images with a few variations in expression and poses. There are also minor characters with silhouettes or filtered photographs (just sticking with the silhouettes would have looked better). Photographs are also used for the backgrounds and as insets for items or actions, but there are no proper CGs. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2298717906 During group conversations, character images are placed around the scene, and the text box moves to each of them as they speak. Even if it looks a bit strange to have their head and shoulders floating in space, it does add a sense of movement that makes the scenes feel more dynamic than if they were just side images next to a static text box. The text speed settings unexpectedly caused me a lot of irritation. The default speed displays the text gradually, but clicking before the line is finished displaying, rather than finishing the line instantly, skips to the next text box without giving you a chance to read the current one. It’s impossible to change the text display speed from the settings menu while you’re playing; the “Low Speed” and “High Speed” menu options are actually auto mode and skip, respectively. To actually change it, you have to return to the main menu screen, click on the Settings button (which takes you to a different settings menu), and change the dialogue settings from “Text Display” to “High Speed.” Maybe the button labels are clearer in Japanese. However, it’s still a bizarre and unintuitive arrangement for some fundamental display options — and it’s a good example of how small UI design choices are invisible when they work smoothly but disproportionately frustrating when they’re wrong. Additionally, the settings menu is inaccessible during most investigation segments. Since losing all your life kicks you back to the main menu with a game over, you may end up having to repeat chunks of the game. You’ll probably also need to replay some segments to get points that unlock all the extra features, but without the menu, you can’t turn on skip mode. (There doesn’t appear to be any keyboard shortcuts.) Skip mode doesn’t skip facial animations anyway, making any amount of replaying rather tedious. Adding an always accessible skip button that also works on animations and restarting a scene with a full life bar when you run out, rather than reload a previous save, would make the game run more smoothly. Unfortunately for a text-based game like this, the biggest weakness is the recently added English translation. It reads like a first draft, with many spelling and grammar mistakes, mixed verb tenses, and a tendency to stick too close to the original Japanese sentence structure and punctuation. For example, the copious amount of quotation marks and brackets used for emphasis in the original Japanese are maintained in the English translation, where they often come across as scare quotes or just break the sentence’s flow in an awkward way. Occasional use of italics or different colored text would have gotten the same idea across while feeling more natural for some important points. Although the story’s still set in Japan, the English version follows the Ace Attorney strategy of localizing meaningful names. For example, the main character’s surname, 万目 Yorozume (literally “many eyes,” reflecting his investigative powers of observation), becomes Truth in the translation. This is a good stylistic choice, but it also feels half-finished. Some names are simply left in Japanese or “English-ified” a little (for example, あすか Asuka becomes Aska), and the inconsistency sticks out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2298299260 The text’s meaning eventually comes across, even with bad grammar, awkward phrasing, and inconsistency. Still, in a detective game like this where you have a lot of dialogue and need to pay close attention to detail, the extra work needed to parse each line can be exhausting if you play through more than a few scenes at a time. EDIT: This game has apparently gotten a translation update since I reviewed it. I haven't had a chance to check it out, but if it's improved the reading experience, that definitely ups my recommendation. Liar Trick is interesting despite its flaws. The gameplay is unique, and with the amount of research and detail that went into it, it’s clearly a labor of love by the developer. It’s difficult to recommend to a general English-speaking audience with the translation in its current state; still, fans of detective games and unusual visual novels should enjoy it if they’re willing to have a little patience.
All the female characters in this game have some very large breasts. Would recommend
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2208696991

游戏的考据&科普:
Anabasis是日本的一个推理游戏制作团队,以开发心理谜题类ADV游戏开发为主要核心。曾经开发过游戏《嘘発見人万目今日助》系列,也是以心理学基调测谎解谜。
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2208696929

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2208696951

最终总结:
《Liar Trick-Psychological Crime Mystery-》

A pretty good detective game that uses facial expressions as their main gameplay focus which is unique compared to other similar titles. It's very satisfying when you succesfully identify the faces and exposing the truth. A lot of the theories used in the game is well researched and a big kudos to the developer for this. The characters are also pretty likable from what I've experienced. The English translation is not too good but definitely understandable and readable. But this issue is definitely understandable as the devs might not have enough resources to translate properly. Overall I like the game a lot and definitely recommended for people who likes Detective games! Will also look forward for the developer future games!
