Finished one of what I'm sure will be multiple playthroughs. A little rough around the edges at times but continues to surprise you throughout and worth the effort you put into it. Also a huge fan of how everything is purely gameplay and intuitive, no tutorials or hand holding here
Surreal and cryptic puzzle game. Really cool aesthetics. No handholding.
Though I have not yet finished the game, I’ve found myself returning to it multiples times as pieces click together in my head and I figure out more and more of what I can do and try. Which is to say, I’ve been thinking about it a lot even after I close it. I’ve loved some of the moments in Lenrual, communicating with some god, flying through an iridescent landscape, meeting a fish (!) and ordering strange new desserts. I’ll be coming back to discover more!
Meeting people, interesting mechanics, and great vibes.
Nice game but can't romance cafe lady! 😕
finally completed the game :'3
Clever games curator review: 5..8? / 10. When they say no hand holding, they really mean it. Even more so than famous examples like The Witness, you are just thrown in with no idea what the goal is, or even what things you could do. With careful attention and a lot of experimenting, however, it is possible to puzzle out some of the things you can do, and if not the entire goal, at least what some of the steps along the way must be. At least that’s where I am 40 minutes into the game. For me personally, I think that’s where I’m going to stop as well. I love games that give you minimal direction such as The Witness, but this is just a little too wide open for me personally (rating: 5/10). That said, I suspect that people who are looking for something truly fresh will enjoy this (8/10?). Be sure to bring a very high tolerance for being lost, though. I suspect strongly that most of the folks who have left a review so far have not gotten that close to completing everything the game has to offer. There is at least some question as to whether or not anyone other than the developer will be able to achieve that, though. If after playing you are thoroughly stuck, rewatch the Steam trailer video for some mild hints as to what to do. Meanwhile, I dig the art style. Minimalist with an illustrated flair. It’s definitely pleasant to walk around, but the world is too small to qualify as a walking sim. We are clearly here to figure out a series of somewhat interconnected puzzles, not just stare at things. Without giving anything away, it seems the game has zero timing elements and thus does not depend on reflexes at all. It seems to be entirely playable with a gamepad, though it was obviously designed with keyboard and mouse in mind first.
TLDR A surreal, but oddly charming exploration puzzler with unique ideas and atmosphere, light on actual puzzles and very short. [14/20⭐, 3h🏅, 2/5💡] Context Lenrual is a surreal exploration-puzzle game built around interacting with strange creatures through line-drawing mechanics, loosely framed around the idea of reaching some form of “awakening” through community. Most of the time, I had little idea what I was doing — or why — but it still manages to be an interesting, if somewhat elusive, experience. Writing The game takes place in a nighttime town, where you play as an undefined entity interacting with creatures going about their evening routines — though all of them seem have trouble communicating. The narrative is entirely abstract, with no written dialogue or explicit storytelling. To progress toward “awakening,” you engage with a variety of surreal figures, such as guy-preparing-cosmic-cakes, floating-hand-serving-drinks, or seaweed-singing-heads. As night passes, the game transitions into dreamlike sequences that push the surrealism even further. As you reach higher levels of awakening, you begin to discern (oddly detailed, for the context) paintings depicting people socialising. There’s clearly an underlying theme — perhaps about connection despite miscommunication — but it remains intentionally vague. Aesthetics The visuals lean into the surreal tone: low-poly environments, sparse lighting, and limited colour palettes create a slightly unsettling atmosphere. This is complemented by scattered, more detailed paintings, which stand out in contrast. The soundtrack is unexpectedly upbeat, which works well against the otherwise strange setting; it makes certain sequences — particularly the larger “mob” puzzle — feel oddly cathartic. Gameplay At its core, Lenruel revolves around line-drawing puzzles, but the real challenge lies in interpreting environmental cues to determine the correct patterns. The game rarely explains itself, so observation and experimentation are key. Rather than discrete levels, progression is tied to interacting with the world and completing small tasks to gain “awakening” points. Some sequences stand out — notably one where you gather a crowd and gradually build a city-wide pattern — but overall the puzzle component is quite light. There are no fail states or game overs, although it is possible to disrupt your own progress and need to re-collect points. Value It took me about 3h to reach the ending and explore most of what I could find, though it’s difficult to tell whether anything significant was missed given the game’s cryptic nature. There is a single save slot, but all areas and puzzles can be revisited. Achievements are tied to progression. Typically for “artistic” games, value is subjective, but be aware that this is more of an exploratory, atmospheric experience.
