No jumpscares, no monsters chasing you, just the nostalgia trip of me using Windows 98 when I was a child. Some people would find this game dull, but this is how I like the pure essence of the backrooms.
Alright. Within the Backrooms has an interesting premise for a liminal spaces game inasmuch as it leans into the PSX aesthetic 100%. Which is undeniably cool in my opinion. However, I have two issues (mmm...really four issues) with this game that diminished the experience for me to the point where I really have no interest in continuing to play the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3762203026 For one, there is zero sense of tension. At all. I prefer a monster free liminal spaces experience, which this is. Unfortunately, and possibly because of the choice to use PSX as the thing driving the visuals in this, it ends up really not being interesting, and rather than levels where finding the exit is the experience, this feels a bit cheap. The first level is set up as an actual maze, but it's small and uncomplicated. You find your way out and end up in a shopping mall. Here, it relies on item puzzles to find your way out. And this is where we get to my second issue. The items are bugged. Or the backpack interface is bugged. Take your pick. Either way, I picked up the coin needed to obtain the key. The coin doesn't show up in my inventory, can't be scrolled to as the only item that does show in my inventory is the elevator card; and as such, I can't obtain the key for this level. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3762201336 That basically means it's game over. As of now, I've picked up more than one disc, of which only one shows up, and I've picked up a couple items, of which only the elevator card shows up. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3762202960 So, I think the combo of any lack of meaningful puzzles, lackluster level design so far as I've played, the item/inventory bugginess, and zero tension leaves me not really wanting to continue even if I could. Which I can't. I see the game has received mostly positive reviews, so I'm the outlier, but regardless, reviews are about our own personal experiences and mine in this game was not stellar. YMMV though. This is the only Backrooms game that actually captures the spirit of the Backrooms, and I'm not talking about the Kane Pixels stuff, I mean the raw liminality of The Backrooms. Don't get me wrong I appreciate Kane and his work, and it is objectively good work, but he really did set off a trend that led to a massive departure of the original spirit of The Backrooms. This is a great game if you're a fan of The Backrooms, or liminal spaces in general, you'll enjoy this game. My only criticism is the music does get repetitive in certain areas, and loops poorly. But that is such a nitpick when the rest is fantastic. I have played basically every Backrooms game under the sun, and this is far and away the best experience I've had.
A short experience, but there is so much rich atmosphere in this title that it can't help but be charming, creepy, and incredibly intriguing. One of the best liminal backrooms games I've ever played, honestly. Mainly because it discards the usual 'get chased by big monster' trope and instead focuses purely on the feelings of each room and level. The graphics are also perfect for it too. Simple and straight to the point without having to sacrifice on the artistic vision. Loved it to bits.
Jogo surpreende.
i 100% it after a few hours and HOLY this was THE best experience i have EVER had with backrooms, i love the idea of it never being about the entities and when there actually are, theyre just chill, thank you for making a game like this!
