Disclaimer: My scores/reviews are almost always based on having bought the game at close to the "lowest historical price" on steam at time of purchase. Quick score: 4/5 Notes: This is a placeholder review just to give the game a bit of help in the steam algorithm. This game definitely should have more attention than it has, though its far from perfect. Ill update once I've finished it, but ill give my quick current thoughts. The art and music are very good. The broad story seems decent, but the dialogue isn't super compelling. Movement and combat is smooth although at least as of now the level design and combat mechanics are a bit basic though still enjoyable. In terms of difficulty, I'm playing through on hardcore mode and I can tell you its definitely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard, however not always in the most enjoyable ways. The 2 main bosses I've fought so far are extremely long repetitive fights with long invulnerability phases, not my idea of fun. Overall above average
Very nice game with a polished gameplay and beautiful art. Don`t let yourself be fooled by the childish look, the game is hard even at normal (there are easier difficulty even a story mode). I'm about 1/3 in after 4h of gameplay so I would expect the game to last about 12-16h in total. Will probably try a hardcore run after Im finish with it.
Legends of Ethernal - игра о том, как людям не дали глаза, но дали удочку.
Really nice game with very inventive boss design. Really enjoyed the difficulty as well, makes you really want to learn the boss fights and gives you great satisfaction when you finally defeat them. Story is really interesting and I would like to know more about the fate of our Hero!
The game wasn't horrible I was just expecting a lot more. The same is a side scrolling action game. The main problem is that most of the mechanics and game design could be so much better. You get 3 total weapons all game, and the only difference is speed and attack damage. You unlock a single ability for each but they are kind of useless and I barely every used them. You get a few items but they are mostly just used for puzzles, and the switching items UI is some of the worst ive ever seen requiring 2 different 2 button combinations pressed repeatedly, and I would forget which item switched which sub-item, and its horrible to try and do on the fly. You can't rebind controls. The platforming isn't very good, with not grabbing ledges sometimes, not being able to move far when you jump; if you dont hold the side button at the right time with the jump and keep holding you just will lose all momentum for some reason. The jumping up the wall with the sickle is horrible and inconsistent as well. This combined with many instant kill traps, and enemies that auto target shoot or hit you and cause you to stun fall mid jump or climb it can be annoying. The fighting system is super clunky as well, as all you have is a single attack and a single dodge that requires like 3 seconds to cooldown, giving you no maneuverability and requiring you a lot of time to just spam attack, dodge, then tank damage. All the boss fights are pretty much gimmick-only. The power/health system require collectibles for some reason of which you have a limited supply and only can upgrade 2x total throughout the entire game. The other main problem is level design seems made to pad out run time. One dungeon area required me opening doors to open a level to go back into a room to turn another level that activates and elevator that i then need to kill a guy to get a key to go back to a prior room to unlock a door. This repeated until I had collected around 6-7 keys throughout the entire level and had to backtrap to flip a switch, etc, and it was super repetitive and same-y with no real need for that system. It was a metroidvania level without all the bad but none of the good like new powers or items. The story is also pretty meh with dialogue that is super stiff and just seems very kid-like as if a grade-schooler wrote it. The visuals are nice and there wasn't really any bugs or problems I encountered so like I said you could do worse, and the game is decent length even if a lot of that seems like filler. 5.5/10.
This Metroid-Vania action adventure game is the first of, let's hope a continuing stream of hits from a very brilliant, talented albeit very small indie studio. Of course, it is not a AAA affair, but what it lacks in the "traditional fireworks" department is far compensated by a very well crafted and engaging narrative, a dreamy soundtrack that fits the scenery and action at all times, enticing art style, dialogues that will put a smile to your face as well as some of the tightest controls of the genre. It is not an easy game, but mastering its mechanics makes it a very rewarding affair. The puzzle-like approach to boss fights makes these encounters fresh and interesting. In the bugs department, this game makes me reminisce of the good old days of complete releases that didn't need day one patches. I have encountered only two noticeable bugs. One during the 3rd boss fight when his second damage phase never kicked in (necessitating a reload). The second during a raft traversal section where the raft became unresponsive until I pressed the button to call it again even though it was already there. Aside these and one or two typos depending on your language preference, this title is virtually bug free. Nothing game breaking in the least as well as no crashes whatsoever. I higly recommend this game to anyone craving for an artsy 2D action adventure title to occupy the time. It is not too long and not too short. First playthrough took me a little more than 7h and that is including every secret you can find. Also recommended if you're looking for something that'll take the edge off from online competitive gaming or even something to enjoy in between big releases (looking at you Cyberpunk). Just the music alone makes it a worthwhile endeavour, don't skip on this as I'm sure you'll fine a lot to like if you're a fan of the genre.
Legends of Ethernal is a good platformer. It deserves more attention.
I'm not that far into Legends of Ethernal and I barely write reviews. As someone else has done I'll add my placeholder review though for now, because this game definitely deserves way more traction. This game has so much going for it but is definitely held back by the hefty price point. I'd recommend waiting for a sale, but hopefully the price gets set down permanently so this game gets the chance it deserves. That being said, so far the game's really sweet! You can tell a lot of effort has gone into it. The art is obviously amazing, and so is the music. The game is also challenging which is good - sometimes it is slightly unfair though. (In my opinion dying from falling in a platformer is not the fairest of things for example, I'd rather have it take one health point. But I digress.) The story is also set up really nicely, I just finished the first boss and am looking forward to progressing. All in all I can definitely recommend this game so far!
A refreshing 2D game with an actual story and challenging gameplay. The great story, the colourful art, the amazing soundtrack and the varied gameplay mechanics keeps the game entertaining until the end. The game still rewards exploration while remaining mostly linear, something that is often missing in recent 2D games focused more on procedural generation and replay value. The handcrafted environments are all unique and full of details so they don't get stale before you finish them. Some of the bosses fight are bit harsh at first but overall it's a nice challenge. A breath of fresh air in the multitude of similar 2D action RPGs.
Very fun 2D side-scroller with colorful graphics and fun gameplay. The enemy design is solid. Every type of enemy must be fought differently. You can't just get away with spamming the same 2 moves all game. The boss fights are the highlight for me. The boss design is inventive and each fight was really hard for me. The game will punish you for messing up in the boss fights. It has an old-school vibe this way. It can feel like they`re piling up on you when you screw up. Luckily, the reload screen is very quick . There is a very easy mode for young kids who just to experience the story without dying all the time. It`s a nice addition because the art is very nice and will appeal to young kids.
