too bad you guys are mssing out real fun rpg./ choose your own adventure game
Old school 40k. This is from a time when 40k still knew what it was. Before Primaris Marines. Before The Emperor was called 'Neoth'. Before Female Custodes. This is the real 40k. This is the 40k we all fell in love with.
*Legacy of Dorn: Herald of Oblivion (Classic)*, developed and published by Tin Man Games, is a narrative-focused digital gamebook that leans fully into choice-driven storytelling within the grim Warhammer 40,000 universe. Rather than offering traditional action or strategy gameplay, it presents a tightly constructed interactive experience where every decision shapes the outcome. You step into the role of an Imperial Fists Space Marine stranded aboard a corrupted space hulk, and from the very beginning, the tone is one of isolation, tension, and relentless danger. The structure follows a branching narrative format reminiscent of classic tabletop gamebooks. At regular intervals, players are presented with choices that determine how events unfold—whether to engage an enemy head-on, take a more cautious route, or conserve limited resources for later encounters. These decisions are rarely trivial, as the consequences can ripple forward and influence survival in unexpected ways. The game encourages careful thinking rather than impulsive action, rewarding players who consider both immediate risks and long-term outcomes. This creates a steady undercurrent of tension, as even seemingly minor decisions can lead to drastically different paths. Combat is integrated into this framework through a simplified system that replaces randomness with controlled decision-making. Instead of relying on dice rolls, players select actions and weapons during encounters, balancing offense and defense while managing limited resources such as health and equipment. While the mechanics themselves are not deeply complex, they add enough interactivity to break up the narrative flow and give a sense of agency during confrontations. The system works best as a complement to the story rather than as a standalone feature, reinforcing the idea that survival depends on strategy as much as on strength. The writing is one of the game’s strongest elements, effectively capturing the oppressive atmosphere of the Warhammer 40K setting. The space hulk serves as a claustrophobic and unpredictable environment, filled with threats that range from alien horrors to corrupted remnants of past conflicts. The narrative maintains a consistent sense of urgency, with each new encounter reinforcing the idea that survival is never guaranteed. The perspective of a lone Space Marine adds weight to the experience, emphasizing duty and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds. Progression is handled through the accumulation of knowledge and resources rather than traditional leveling systems. Each choice can influence what equipment you acquire, what information you uncover, and how prepared you are for future challenges. This creates a subtle but effective sense of development, where growth is tied directly to the player’s decisions. Multiple playthroughs reveal different aspects of the story, encouraging experimentation and exploration of alternate paths. The branching design ensures that no single run provides a complete picture, adding to the game’s replay value. Visually, the presentation is minimal but appropriate for the format. The interface is clean and easy to navigate, allowing players to focus on the narrative without unnecessary distractions. Atmospheric sound design and occasional visual elements help reinforce the tone, but the emphasis remains firmly on the text and the choices it presents. This simplicity works in the game’s favor, as it keeps the experience focused and immersive. However, the game’s narrow focus may limit its appeal. Players expecting traditional gameplay systems or deeper mechanical complexity may find it lacking, as the experience is almost entirely driven by narrative and decision-making. While the branching paths provide variety, the underlying structure remains consistent, which can reduce the sense of novelty after multiple playthroughs. The combat system, while functional, does not evolve significantly, and its simplicity may not satisfy those looking for more depth. Ultimately, *Legacy of Dorn: Herald of Oblivion (Classic)* is a well-crafted interactive story that succeeds by fully embracing its format. It delivers a tense and atmospheric journey through a hostile environment, supported by meaningful choices and a strong sense of consequence. For fans of gamebooks, narrative-driven experiences, or the Warhammer 40K setting, it offers a compelling and immersive adventure. For others seeking more traditional gameplay, it may feel limited, but within its niche, it stands as a solid and engaging example of interactive storytelling. Rating: 7/10
WAR SPACE MARINE OF THE XENOTOP MOUNTAIN!
Disclaimer: I have 0 knowledge of Warhammer 40000. I guess it's space marines who shoots at space orks and dark eldars and stuff? Emperor, space pope and things like that? I do know a little bit of Warhammer fantasy but oh gods, this game throws A LOT of lore stuff towards you. But I survived! And enjoyed it so I guess if you are the same as me, a Gamebook fan then it should be enjoyable! I only bought this as having played other Gamebook adaptations from the Developer and knowing the author of the book (Jonathan Green), I thought it was worth a shot. It's not the hardest ever gamebook but it's quite devious, some parts are full of death traps but it seems that's the life of a Space Marine...It's quite fun to go around discovering new weapons and trying them on the ennemies. The battle is completely different to Fighting Fantasy where you just roll dice and hope for a higher number. It's sort of a slow, turn by turn Street Fighter brawling/shooting. You have some limited actions you can do on your turn such as move, focus (to attack or defend better) and shoot/hit/punch/cut/chainsaw some xenos. The story oozes atmosphere and is well written (as usual if you are used to Jonathan Green), it throws a LOT of lore towards you and complicate words/adjectives/roles/jobs of Warhammer 40000 world but even if you are a total initiate such as myself, well you can just understand it's like being the Colonial Marines in Aliens except there are more than one type of enemies. There are many endings (some where you are worthy and some where you aren't) and it can be quite hard to find it but it's not impossible. A great adaptation, even for a complete new starter in the lore. I recommend this book if you have a few hours and want something different from classic sword and shield fantasy.

A fun Choose your own adventure game that's finally back on Steam. A quality story filled with a variety of enemies from across the Warhammer universe including a few I was surprised to run into. If you like story book games or just Warhammer 40k in general, this is well worth picking up
