great for picking up landnav relatively easily. whereas books or videos might teach you the theory, putting it into practice by 'playing' lets you adopt and develop it (sometimes by making mistakes, getting hopelessly lost and having to find your way again)
Ok, so it isn't finished... but it's fully functional and highly realistic! Great tool to brush up on the knowledge needed to use a map, compass and protractor. It can also be used to learn from scratch, but some homework would be needed in that case (some reading and a YouTube tutorial or 2 would be enough). The dev is very involved and open to any feedback. I can imagine the price looking a bit steep in the era of F2P games and multi million dollar companies pushing content at costprice. However, if you're seriously interested in working with map/compass or need it (now or in the future) for your professional endavours it's pocketchange for what you get! Looking forward to the future.
There's a lot of videos on youtube that do an excellent job at giving you a basic idea on how to conduct land nav. With that knowledge, it's easy to apply it in this simulator. But even without that, the game itself has a lot of information to help you. The controls are relatively simple and quick to learn. FYI, if you want to reset your pace count, press the comma key.
Refunded As a disclaimer, I'm saying that I would recommend this game to players, but not in its current state. It clearly needs to be polished, especially the controls. The game has potential as a good learning tool for land navigation, better than anything I've seen in the Army. It incorporates loads of good features: You can use a compass, map, protractor, orient the map, use a pace count with beads, a notepad, etc. CONS: The controls need to be polished. Everything seemed unintuitive to use and was clunky. You can orient your map and then it gets rotated in a weird manner so that when you press space-bar for planning mode, it will stay in that weird angle. If the controls are going to stay the way they are, there should be a translucent overlay on top telling you the controls when you're selecting a tool. For example, if you hold the map or protractor, it should state "Q and E to rotate". I wanted to practice finding points but even the thick vegetation was annoying and kept shifting your character and changing your perspective. Highly annoying.
If you want to get better at nav, this is the game for you.
I would definitely recommend this game for everyone, who are interested in nav trainings as long as LANDNAV is the most precious land navigation simulator I have ever seen.
I am enjoying this for training up my land navigation skills. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to freshen up or fine tune their skills. This is a very good way to practice and save yourself a lot of sweat, tears and frustration in the field when the time really counts.
Truly an excellent tool for those wanting to practice their land nav skillset. Keep in mind, this game does NOT teach you how to conduct land nav, and the controls can be a little weird to learn at first, but if you can keep at it, this will definitely elevate your land nav game second only to actually doing it outside (and touching grass).
I have zero knowledge when it comes to land navigation. I grew up at a time when personal GPS devices, cellphones, the internet, and personal computers didn't exist. We did have MTV already, Back to the Future I, and Die Hard 1 came out in theaters. I really wish we had this application during my time growing up but then we didn't have the technology back then. Fast forward four decades later, I now find this application and I am enjoying learning what I should have learned four decades ago. I've just been reading the "Learning" section"..slowly. This is a unique application that I know will help people get interested in a field/hobby that is altogether unique. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Please support this dev.
