Not sure I'd call this a game. This is a training simulator that teaches you compass navigation in a safe environment. Currently there's one map but that map is huge. You get to use a military lensatic compass, protractor, a watch, counting beads to record your pace, and a topographic map. Through the process of dead reckoning and terrain association, you make your way across the map to reach each of your goals. The goals are to reach a set of control points located throughout the map. It's not so easy walking a straight line either. There's trees and brush along the way and you have to account for magnetic declination (given to you on the map and appear on maps in real life). The brush slows you down, you experience fatigue, you slow down up hills, etc... This is a great simulator and I can't wait to see what else the developer has in store. PS, to get to the menu and get to the exercises, after you choose your character and press Begin, press Escape and the menu comes up. If you don't do this you're at free-roam. Not sure why it's configured this way. Had to figure that out myself.
Great game for military personnel. Helped me immensely at improving my landnav.
It's a great start - will be very good in the future if the dev keeps at it. Makes me feel like an idiot though. I would like a few things however just for quality of life - *Be able to change field of view for first person view (huge) *Be able to turn of motion blur (also huge) *Binoculars would be cool and would help rather than zooming in and out which is weirdly disorienting *The plot points that you can draw are very large, and end up messing up the precision and accuracy of where to go *I'm not sure if I was just missing something, but having a notepad where you can take actual notes would be good rather than just writing down random plot points *Being able to write on the map would be a plus *I know this is early early development, but having some sort of visual direction would help to get started rather than reading the material. The material did help, however I just literally can't wrap my head around the terrain reading. The material is incredibly elaborate, though and I'm most likely just a dumb ass Really really great and something that I've searched for for a long while. Glad someone is starting to take initiative into this. EDIT: You can write notes on the notepad I'm just an idiot
Note: the game is still early access, the developer has said they are unable to mark as such because of some weird Steam rule. Note 2: the only content is the army guy on the autumn forest map, it's a lot of content, but the mountain map with the girl is still in the works. If you're military - everyone should try it. The tools are realistic, I think it's the best training you can get unless you have personal access to a Landnav course and 1:50,000 topo maps. If your civilian - I still recommend it. You get to see a big part of the military experience that never makes it in video games. However, I wouldn't consider it a military game because that's ubiquitous with combat. If you want a relaxing a rewarding simulator, then plotting and finding points is pretty fun, if you don't mind getting lost every once and a while.
Extremely powerful land navigation tool. Allows practice of the techniques taught to me in the Army. Useful for any Soldier needing to practice their land nav skills which is a perishable skill. Really look forward to using this more in the future.
great for picking up landnav relatively easily. whereas books or videos might teach you the theory, putting it into practice by 'playing' lets you adopt and develop it (sometimes by making mistakes, getting hopelessly lost and having to find your way again)
This game is absolutely perfect for its purpose. I was very poor at land nav before I bought it. I couldn't imagine how hard my job would be if I didn't have this beforehand. If you're looking to learn this as a skill or training in the military, I recommend this 100%. Easiest and safest way to learn no doubt.
Only 3 hours in, and for now I still get lost. (both in app and in real life) ... must (and will) practice more! This sim is an excellent way to do so and help me to become a true landnav pro! Loving it.
Ok, so it isn't finished... but it's fully functional and highly realistic! Great tool to brush up on the knowledge needed to use a map, compass and protractor. It can also be used to learn from scratch, but some homework would be needed in that case (some reading and a YouTube tutorial or 2 would be enough). The dev is very involved and open to any feedback. I can imagine the price looking a bit steep in the era of F2P games and multi million dollar companies pushing content at costprice. However, if you're seriously interested in working with map/compass or need it (now or in the future) for your professional endavours it's pocketchange for what you get! Looking forward to the future.
There's a lot of videos on youtube that do an excellent job at giving you a basic idea on how to conduct land nav. With that knowledge, it's easy to apply it in this simulator. But even without that, the game itself has a lot of information to help you. The controls are relatively simple and quick to learn. FYI, if you want to reset your pace count, press the comma key.
