Abadoned game, current state is more like a demo gameplay.
Do not buy this game for full price. I bought it on sale for about $8 and I wouldn't have wanted to pay any higher than that because it's basically an abandoned game. There will be no more updates and haven't been for about 3 years. It's fun for a short time but once you figure out the mechanics it does get boring and rather repetitive. If that game was still updating and changes were being made, then I think full price could be worth it since the art style and mechanics are interesting, but with no updates and already an unfinished feel....it makes it hard to justify the price.
this game is certainly not perfect and rather niche, and i'd definitely wait to buy it on sale. it's not for everyone, and the people who think it's boring are just not the target audience. and that's okay! with that being said, if you like micromanagement, relationship and character intricacies, city builder-like inventory and item mechanics, and STATS!! this is definitely for you. it's fun to get things up and running. finding a "perfect match" is exciting, getting a child's talent up to 100% in their preferred subject is satisfying, the drama that can pop up seemingly randomly as well as be guided and intentional is always funny and makes things less bland. and don't get me started on how great it is to have an inheritance page filled out completely for the first time, because, WOW of course, with any game like this, scenes will become repetitive and may seem unimportant in the long run, but i don't think that's a negative of lakeburg specifically. there can't be infinite scenarios, and the scenarios they do have are fun and well written. the writing in lakeburg is witty and tongue-in-cheek without being over the top, which can be really difficult to do, but they do it! this isn't as impactful for some people, but as someone who is extremely picky with the designs and art styles of media, i absolutely looooove lakeburg. the art style of the characters and buildings/backgrounds is satisfying and very diverse. cute without being too cartoony, bouncy and soft, just detailed enough to make the character editor (*the character editor!!*) worth messing around with, and overall beautiful. it might be one of my favorite art styles in a game ever. again, this is not a game for everyone, but if it's for you, it is FOR YOU. the option to focus more on relationships or city building is a great addition for the people (me) who are using this as a sims-adjacent stat builder. i wish the prestige system rewarded you with more than just illustrations, but they're great illustrations and give you something to work towards which is enough for me. i also wish it was more obvious how to achieve a victory, but that is probably a skill diff on my part. i'm looking forward to grinding for these achievements too!! theyre ridiculous and so specific which is a lot of fun. overall, this game is great for what it is. i think it could benefit from a demo so people know what exactly they're getting into, and it could be fun to have some updates or DLCs with more/different content! i'm having a ton of fun with lakeburg and i hope it reaches other players with hyper-specific game interests.
The game has a fun concept but feels unfinished and frequently crashes, and considering there hasnt been an update in years it seems it will stay this way.
I just can't support a game about eugenics, no matter how cutely they package it. Really, who are we (or more specifically, the developers) to say which physical traits are "good" or "bad" or "undesirable"? This way of thinking quickly descends into ableism. Also, there isn't much to do in this game anyway. I played for about 15 hours and then I was done. I felt like there was nothing left to do that was worth my time. With so many great games out there that you could be playing, I don't see much of a reason to spend your precious time playing this one.
I'm not sure what these people are on about with their complaints that the game is incomplete? It's a nice, easy-going game. Sure, it can be repetitive, but all games like this are. I see this as a more town management game and you actually get to build different buildings and put people where they would fit best. Something I think is cool is that you can just overthrow the king/queen at any point if you want? I dunno, this is a really interesting game and well-worth my time. I WILL SAY that I recommend getting this game on sale. It's a good game but not worth $20 in my honest opinion.
Extremely sweet game with gorgeous art. Unfortunately, the gameplay is just not fleshed out enough and as others have said becomes extremely repetitive after about 6 hours. The management aspect is especially lackluster, where the order you build new buildings in being decided from the start. The game would probably benefit from fdropping the management more and making it more about the relationships since it is very unique. If it was worked on more I think it could have become a great game, but as it is, I can't reccommend buying it for more than 5-10 bucks as it becomes boring after some hours.
In all fairness, the art is beautiful but the gameplay becomes repetitive quite quickly...
I played the demo and was excited for the full release, but had read reviews to say it wasn't worth it and to wait for it to go on sale at least. So I did, and now I understand they were right. Even fully released it still feels like a demo. The RNG of villagers leaves you strained when you get above 40, and the relationships between the couples and their neighbors don't really add anything to gameplay. It feels more like a passive resource gathering game than a matchmaking one.
Such a cozy village sim! I love marriage and generations in my management sims so I found this really enjoyable. It has a beautiful storybook style with detailed animations, I like how the profiles are customizable like a picrew avatar builder. I do wish that I could see some sort of tangible interaction though, like seeing villagers interact instead of just reading a log about it. But I'm sure that would affect how the game performs, or make it harder to manage the village. I haven't done many playthroughs yet but after my first playthrough, I did wish there was more fanfare to the end of my game's timeline, like ending credits or montage. Sadly I heard there's no more dev support so I don't expect any quality of life updates or improvements made. Still, I recommend it- especially when it's on sale for 70% off (which is how much I got it for).
