Outwit a metrics-obsessed machine intent on heckling you for your humanity.
Participate in satirical in-game analytics that are updated in real time with real player data.
Lab Rat is a hand-crafted narrative puzzler masquerading as a machine-generated video game. This satirical adventure stars a metrics-obsessed AI who will monitor, profile, and guide you as you solve over a hundred unique spatial problems. Over time this AI will develop a hilariously-misguided understanding of humanity based on your performance and survey response data.
While Lab Rat pokes fun at the absurdity of algorithmically-generated interactions, this game is lovingly hand-crafted by a team of expert human developers. Lab Rat is directed by Gwen Frey (creator of Kine & co-creator of The Flame in the Flood). It features environment art by Mike Snight (Lead World Builder, Bioshock Infinite), writing and programming by Ian Bond (Programmer/Developer, Bioshock 1), and puzzles by Lucas Le Slo (beloved experimental puzzle designer).

Lab Rat is a puzzle game that takes a familiar concept and transforms it into something surprisingly fresh through its sharp sense of humor and clever narrative framework. Developed by Chump Squad and published by Klei Entertainment, the game places players inside a strange testing environment overseen by an artificial intelligence that constantly observes, evaluates, and comments on every decision made. Rather than serving as a simple guide, this AI becomes the heart of the experience, turning each puzzle into part of a larger experiment focused on understanding human behavior. The result is a game that combines challenging brainteasers with a satirical look at modern technology, data collection, and machine learning. The puzzle design is one of the game's strongest qualities. Across more than a hundred handcrafted challenges, players encounter a steady stream of mechanics involving environmental manipulation, logical reasoning, and creative experimentation. Each new idea is introduced at a comfortable pace before being expanded upon in increasingly complex ways. The game rarely relies on repetition, instead encouraging players to think differently as new elements are layered together. This consistent evolution keeps the gameplay engaging from beginning to end and prevents the experience from becoming predictable. What makes Lab Rat stand out among other puzzle titles is the way it merges storytelling directly into gameplay. The AI narrator continuously gathers information from player actions and survey responses, then uses that data to form amusing conclusions about humanity. These observations are often inaccurate, exaggerated, or completely ridiculous, creating a steady flow of comedy throughout the campaign. Beneath the humor lies a thoughtful critique of how algorithms attempt to categorize people based on limited information. The game's writing cleverly explores themes surrounding artificial intelligence, digital profiling, and the growing reliance on data-driven decision making without ever feeling overly serious or heavy-handed. Visually, the game embraces a clean and functional aesthetic that keeps attention focused on solving puzzles. The testing chambers and interfaces create the impression of participating in a controlled scientific experiment, reinforcing the narrative at every step. Menus, statistics, and feedback screens are incorporated naturally into the world rather than feeling like separate systems. This attention to thematic consistency helps create a strong sense of immersion and makes the entire experience feel cohesive. Another area where Lab Rat succeeds is pacing. The game understands how to balance moments of challenge with lighter narrative sequences. When a difficult puzzle threatens to slow momentum, the AI's entertaining commentary often provides enough amusement to keep players invested. Likewise, the steady introduction of new mechanics ensures that curiosity remains high throughout the adventure. The progression feels carefully planned, demonstrating the influence of experienced designers who understand how to maintain player engagement over an extended campaign. The humor deserves particular praise because it never relies solely on jokes. Much of the comedy emerges from the AI's misplaced confidence and flawed understanding of human nature. Watching the system draw absurd conclusions from simple player actions becomes increasingly entertaining as the game progresses. Fans of narrative-driven puzzle games will likely appreciate how the writing complements the gameplay instead of distracting from it. The satirical tone remains consistent and gives the game a unique personality that separates it from many competitors in the genre. Lab Rat is not entirely without limitations. Players looking for action-heavy gameplay or fast-paced excitement may find its methodical approach less appealing. Success depends largely on patience, observation, and logical thinking rather than reflexes. Some later puzzles also demand a significant amount of experimentation, which may occasionally frustrate those seeking a more relaxed experience. However, these challenges are generally fair and rewarding, making them feel like natural extensions of the game's design philosophy rather than unnecessary obstacles. Overall, Lab Rat delivers an intelligent and entertaining puzzle adventure that succeeds on multiple levels. Its inventive challenges, memorable AI narrator, and timely commentary on technology create an experience that is both thought-provoking and consistently enjoyable. By combining strong puzzle design with a witty narrative about the relationship between humans and algorithms, the game offers far more than a traditional collection of brainteasers. It stands as a smart, polished, and highly distinctive entry in the puzzle genre that rewards curiosity, critical thinking, and a willingness to laugh at the strange ways technology attempts to understand us. Rating: 9/10
So..... consider this a lukewarm recommendation, worth a look only at a 70% discount or higher. Lab Rat is an experimental game and one that you want to root for. "Sokoban, but it's the Stanley Parable, guest-starring GlaDOS." It wants to do something offbeat, inventive, and satirical in the thriving sokoban niche. It is a profoundly hit or miss experience. On paper, you can see several 'hook' and 'playability' strategies that maybe could have given Lab Rat an impressive audience, but didn't. These six strategies are: narrative mash-ups with famous games, breadth over depth in puzzle design (novelty), unpredictability of progression (the game keeps you on your toes, you have no idea where it will go from one chapter to the next), a more open path to completion (not all puzzles are required to advance to the next chapter), a sense of humor (you play not only to solve puzzles but to laugh), and a contemporary graphics engine (Unreal). Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's not. Some puzzle types are more enjoyable than others, some chapters are more enjoyable than others, the music is bland. Without a doubt, the game peaks in Chapters 2 and 3, completely falls apart in Chapter 4, and then limps to the finish line in Chapter 5. If you like these types of puzzle games, I bet you'll enjoy the first 5-6 hours. I did like that the game's overall puzzle difficulty is 'intermediate' - not cozy/casual and not hardcore/brutal. If you're thinking about picking it up, maybe consider playing one of the following more successful and beloved indie sokoban games: Baba is You (2019), A Monster's Expedition (2019), Patrick's Parabox (2022), Void Stranger (2023), Can of Wormholes (2023) and especially Isles of Sea & Sky (2024). Or grab it on sale.
游戏的核心机制是“带颜色的箱子”,难度曲线平缓,卡关不多,在毒舌AI的黑色幽默下,经常会心一笑。总结来说,解谜机制和故事情节结合得非常赞!适合解谜新手入门~
Funny puzzle game with some good writing. Laughed out loud at some jokes. Enjoyed the puzzles and got a bit stuck on some, but you can skip past some levels (not entirely sure how that works). I haven't finished yet, but worth your time if you like spatial logic puzzles.
A good game with good humour. If your are into puzzle games and also into some parody of those games this is a must buy.
Fun game, funny story, worth a play.
