A vengeful forest spirit take out its grievances on the human invaders in a slender roguelike action platformer.
Koboo: The Tree Spirit is a medium weight indie roguelike that really nails the theme of being a small owl-like spirit ferociously defending the sylvan realm from bastardly human encroachers. First and foremost, the presentation of this game is splendid. Both the artwork and music are gorgeous and I really like the rather old school aesthetic it is evoking. Even though the snarling demonic face shown in the library is quite far from the cute protagonist portrayed in the game, it really reminds me of the old storytelling that dressed the woodlands in mystique with tales of spirits and monsters hiding in the undergrowth. As a secluded northern barbarian I have a soft spot for all things folklore, so bonus points galore! At first glance this game borrows quite heavily from Dead Cells, however it quickly finds its own legs to stand on. You constantly respawn in a hub world where a selection of curated cursed weapons of destruction are on display in preparation of your next foray into the human-infested forest. On your way through the forest you gather trinkets that enhance your run as well as spirit animal powers that grant you unique abilities themed around its donor. As you encounter more of the woodland creatures you start unlocking favors that lead to more powers, weapons and enhancements. The combat is simple with most of the enemies represented being stationary with glowing weak spots that dish out extra damage if targeted. You have a dodge and start out with a triple jump so the mobility in the game is quite generous from the get go. All in all the gameplay is easy to learn and enjoyable. The game itself is focused around short loops and in time you unlock more paths via abilities and powers that fleshes out the game a bit, but as of writing the game is rather limited in scope. There is a set of rooms and bosses that once you have learned their abilities lose some of the challenge. However this is a very active developer and during my time of testing there have been multiple additions to the game content and the base game have so far given me well over 10 hours of enjoyment. There are also a bunch of secret paths, a bunch of collectables in the shape of seeds, fish-friends and insects that add a bit more spice to the setting. In the end this is a hearty recommendation. I really enjoyed this game and I can conclude that there are too few games exploring the anti-civilisation theme. Now go forth and drive them cityheads out of the woods! Roguelite fans: do NOT sleep on this little gem! A cursory glance at the trailer and screenshots should assure you that the A/V design of Koboo: The Tree Spirit is wonderful. But I'm here to assure you that the gameplay is wonderful as well. The unique twist of Koboo is that you play as a tiny warrior fighting off humans encroaching on your forest, which means that all enemies (not just bosses) are significantly larger than you. This adds an interesting feel to the game that's backed up by the brilliant critical system: certain points randomly appear on enemies, and striking those before they fade will deal critical damage. This is a unique system in and of itself, but its advantage is twofold: not only does it make each fight (even against the same enemy) a little different each time, it also reinforces the sense that you are small, since you'll have to double and triple jump to reach critical points higher up on enemies. It's a truly clever system that ties the combat together well. Beyond the moment-to-moment gameplay, Koboo features a very interesting weapon customization system that provides meaningful choices that actually change how weapons handle. Equippable infusions grant new passives that also synergize with each weapon's talent tree: maybe you build your sword to be a slow, heavy hitter, a fast poison applicator, or even a one-shot machine based on landing perfect, first-hit critical strikes. There's a ton to play around with for each weapon, and additional active and passive abilities round the build system. Add on Dead-Cells style metaprogression, genuinely entertaining cutscenes, and an impressive sense of polish, and Koboo: The Tree Spirit as an absolute winner on all fronts. The game does seem to be on the smaller side, with pretty short runs, but I don't mind this at all. The game feels like it's just crammed with good ideas, from gameplay design to quality-of-life. If you are a roguelite fan, you MUST play this game. Platformer and adventure game fans will enjoy this as well. For the quality, $12-15 is easily worth it. It took my about 90 minutes to win my first run, but I have plenty of unlockables and what appear to be several additional story bosses to defeat. This isn't going to be a 1,000 hour roguelite like Isaac or Risk of Rain 2, but fans of the genre will get a good handful of very enjoyable hours. Don't skip this one!
Bargain bin roguelike. Its pretty bland rooms with a few oversized sprites that spawn in wth circles on them. The weapons are boring, and the upgrades are boring.
The game is super clunky and super buggy. It's a bad sign when even the tutorial isn't working. I got a black screen not even 10 minutes in. Outside of the bugginess, the combat feels really clunky. There are freeze frames are that obnoxious and it just does not feel smooth at all. Also, after beating the first boss, I got sent back to the main area without any way to progress. The portal that you would normally use to keep progressing was gone, effectively ending the run.
A very nice game. It might feel a bit boring when you're only 2-3 runs into it but it opens up! New Areas, New Bosses and things to discover. Pros: - Music is Amazing! (except the puppeteer) - Story - Art style - Amount of Weapons + Skills - Good length for quick play through (3 boss fights (20-30min) Cons: - Price ... it's on the high end - Equipment slots ... you only have 2 slots for trinckets and it feels kind a meh .. All of this is my personal opinion but you should give this game try :)
This game is essentially a mini Dead Cells, in multiple senses of the word. To start, you are literally...well, mini. You're a forest spirit, and many of the enemies you fight are humans, golems, or machines, making most enemies double or triple your size. This is easily compensated for, however, by your character's versatile vertical movement. You can jump high, and you can jump three times before having to touch the ground. A glider you can find later in the game can increase your airtime further, and certain weapon upgrades recharge a jump charge when you hit an enemy, letting you stay in the air even larger and making for a very fun game of the floor is lava. Second, the game is short. Some people may dislike short games, but personally, I see that as a good thing. Sometimes it's nice to not have to dedicate hours at a time to one game. A full run can be completed in just about 12 minutes, if your weapons are good and you're good at dodging the bosses' attacks. The game has a total of eight biomes, each with their own unique boss and enemies, but you'll only be visiting three biomes total in any given run, branching paths determining what enemies and bosses you face, with their being two tier one, three tier two, and three tier three bosses to face. Similarly to Dead Cells, you can purchase new weapons, abilities, and upgrades from a sort of shop, though instead of cells, you use favor, and instead of being dropped by enemies you kill, favor is gained by doing acts of nature conservation, such as removing trash from the rivers, planting a beautiful garden, and....killing giant death machines. There are a couple systems in place that I personally enjoy more in this game than the way they're done in other games. First, rather than critical damage being a % chance, enemies have weak spots that can be attacked for critical damage, and the weak spot moves when hit, somewhere either higher or lower than it previously was, further incentivizing vertical movement. Second, the game is a little more forgiving than other roguelikes when it comes to health and taking damage. You can have three health points, but your health is fully restored at the beginning of each room, rather than having to rely on healing that is usually few and far between. Additionally, on taking your third and final hit, you enter what is essentially "fight for your life" mode, in which you have a limited amount of time to get a kill, and if you successfully defeat an enemy within this window, your last health point is restored. Finally, rather than relying on RNG to hope that a weapon you like drops, or being forced to stick with your level 1 starter because none of the high level weapons are something you want to use, you'll periodically get to upgrade your equipped weapons, choosing from a selection of three possible upgrades, each with three tiers. New on-level weapons will drop as well if you want to change things up, but the ability to keep and upgrade weapons rather than being forced to change up styles mid-run is a welcome change. The same goes for abilites, upgrades coming periodically as you progress, though no new abilities will drop, the 2 you take will be set in stone. Overall, good game, good weapons, good combat, good upgrade systems. Worth the money, and worth a try if you like roguelikes and action platformers.
Super fun game!! Combat is fun and snappy, controls are largely intuitive and customizable if needed. Graphics are also super pretty with fun character interactions sprinkled throughout. Had a great time jumping in and getting into the action right off the bat, and looking forward to many more runs to 100%!
Extremely fun sidescroller roguelite, definitely gives me Skul vibes and I love the crit system. My only criticism is how few variations there are for enemy spawns, but that can be easily fixed! Do not miss out on this game!
A very refreshing game to the rogue-like genre. The dialog is very entertaining when you meet certain characters / events, and the art-style is such a vibe. If you love rogue-likes and want to support a indie team of TWO people, I highly recommend checking out this game and joining their discord community!
