Having a blast, this is an absolute hidden gem of a puzzle Platformer. Everything's well put together and overall just super fun! And you are a fox! What else could one want?
While it appears to be little more than a humble indie throwback to the old school platformers of the 90s and 2000s, there's a ton of hidden depth and complexity with Kit's Quest. If you enjoy games like Banjo-Kazooie or Spyro, you'll definitely like this one. My experience is best described as a constant state of pleasant surprise. Right when I think I have seen everything this game has to offer, it comes up with a clever, inventive way to keep things fresh. Its pacing makes sure you are constantly discovering new things without it feeling too overwhelming. The plot is very basic. Your sister is kidnapped by a dragon and you have to go rescue her by exploring five areas interconnected by a hub world. While it doesn't get any more complicated than that, the writing and the humor adds a bit of extra personality and worldbuilding. The characters are very quirky and even downright hilarious when you find yourself helping individuals who may have some shady motivations. But hey, at least they keep their word and give you collectibles for holding up your end of the deal. The graphics are passable and get the job done. I would say it's the weakest part of the game as the character designs aren't particularly memorable for me. It never affected my ability to enjoy the game though. I experienced no major performance issues, and its clever use of dynamic lighting and particle effects added that bit of extra flair. The music was particularly standout. While I do wish it could have used higher quality soundfonts, the way it integrates into the game is nothing short of impressive. It is adaptive - that is, the music will change based on what you are doing. Obstacles even move to the beat, meaning you'll have to time your jumps accordingly. One of the late game stages, Enchanted Metalworks, does this particularly well and is by far my favorite area. The game also features some incredible level design. Partway through the game, you'll discover that the different worlds you explore are actually interconnected much like Banjo Tooie. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a full on Metroidvania but being able to go to different levels outside of the main entrances in the hub world made things a lot more interesting. With the extra bit of nonlinearity, you have to think outside the box to acquire some of the collectibles. Difficultywise, it's fairly well balanced. I played on the challenger difficulty as it is the recommended mode for anyone who has played 3D platformers before. The game starts off very easy, but gradually ramps up the challenge. Only a handful of times did I experience some moments that I considered downright unfair. In one area, there's a puzzle where you have to dodge moving pistons and a few times, I felt like the collision was a little wonky. Thankfully, since there are no lives and you immediately respawn nearby when you die, much of the potential frustration factor is alleviated. I was able to quickly retry any challenge I failed without significant backtracking. Overall, I strongly recommend. If you're looking for something to scratch that itch amidst the drought of mainstream 3D platformers, this one will definitely tide you over for a good while.
This game is a big hit with my 6 year old daughter. It's interesting and delightful but has lots of good explanations. Kudos on the art style and game mechanics!
A fun 3D platformer! I played through the first two areas. The mechanics are relatively straightforward and simple to learn. But difficulty still escalates via more challenging contexts and constraints (e.g. a time-constrained objective to navigate a tricky area) which keeps things interesting. I particularly appreciated the quality of life features (for example: teleportation pads around a tricky-to-traverse level) that let the player focus on the current challenge without getting bogged down.
overall rating: 10/10 i wanted to post a positive review sooner, but told myself to wait until i 100% completed the game with all achievements. this is outright the best indie 3d platformer i've played. it perfectly emulates older 3d platformers like banjo kazooie/tooie, spyro, and even games like battle for bikini bottom. i grew up playing 3d platformers, and i've never seen an indie 3d platformer match the vibe so perfectly. firstly the graphics. i think they may look "bad" or "unimpressive" to some, but they're really charming to me. they make it feel more like a ps2/ps3 game because they're not overly perfect and detailed. the game is bright and nice to look at while keeping a nostalgia factor. also this game is proof that passionate game devs can make an incredible game even with premade assets (since, for some reason, premade assets are looked down upon. in asset flips i hate them, but this game is NOT that). the music is amazing. so catchy and the music fits the theme of each area. it's also dynamic, like going underwater changes the music. it's really high quality and i never got tired of the songs at all, unlike some games. i'm not sure who the composer(s) is/are but it's really well done. performance was mostly fine, the camera would glitch out when i shift+tabbed or alt+tabbed out and i'd have to reboot the game to fix it. it only crashed once in my 14 hours of play, but it seemingly autosaves your progress so nothing really gets lost. i've seen games with bigger budgets and teams have way more bugs so i'm impressed this game performed pretty well for an indie game with a singular dev and small playtesting team. onto the most important thing: the gameplay is fun and genuinely feels like an older platformer. a bit janky sometimes, like the climbing. kit's jump feels clumsy initially but once you learn it, it feels really good to jump around and you genuinely feel like you're improving. the dash is quick enough to get around as well (though i wish if i held it down kit would continously dash, though i get why this isn't a thing). i notice a lot of newer 3d platformers have more dynamic and slippery movement (the character 'speeds up' as you run forward or turns weird) and this doesn't have that, similar to older 3d platformers, which i love. the levels get naturally harder and so do the puzzles in them. it's not an "easy" platformer but also not overly difficult. enchanted metalworks has some pretty tough platforming compared to the rest of the game for example, but you don't get there until you're pretty far in. the bosses range from easy to "wtf seriously?" (until you finally nail it). it really reminded me of, for example, ice age 2 for the ps2/gc but more actual collectibles and you're able to backtrack with new abilities as you unlock them. the puzzles can be tough for some of the optional stuff, but doable, and the dev made a guide for some like the bamboo puzzles. there were times i got a bit frustrated like in the boss rush, but that would never make me take points away from such a wonderful game otherwise. dialogue/characters are witty and cute. i love the hats on the birds/foxes, it's goofy in a really charming way. the characters say some silly, clever remarks, as do the bosses. best character is queen nelli... kit plays the silent protagonist, but i actually really prefer silent protags in these kinds of games (something i also grew up with, most platformers having a silent protag). you can tell the dev had fun writing the dialogue, and while the story is pretty simple (go on a journey to save sister from evil dragon, meet allies along the way) i don't think 3d platformers need crazy deep stories. most don't, honestly. this game makes me so happy and i can genuinely tell the dev put so much love and passion into it. they are also super helpful in their discord, even with this game having released a while back! this is a true emulation of older, classic 3d platformers. it stays traditional, and to me, that's an awesome thing. many 3d platformers have more bells and whistles compared to older ones as technology has evolved, or they have incredibly pretty graphics. and that's awesome too, but it's a breath of fresh air to see a game that comes SO CLOSE to the old feel that games had in all regards. however, if you are NOT someone who grew up with platformers, or if you only play games with the latest and greatest graphics or mechanics, you may find this a bit unimpressive. it's niche, but if you're willing to give it a try, it's a wonderful little game full of love. i would love to see the developer make a sequel or another game!\ thank you lone fox games for reviving my childhood....
Wouah ! :) J'adore ! :D
This is a 3D Collectathon inspired by N64 era platformers, with it being as difficult as one as well. Controller is a must and be prepared to die a lot. That being said, this game is expertly designed, propping level design on the same level as classics like Banjo-Kazooie. This game made me feel like I was back playing on retro consoles, discovering multitude of secrets and hidden quirks. Has a lot more modern QoL then older platformers too, and a pretty decent OST as well. Not much to say, but a really solid game.
Got this game because I like foxes and thought it looked good. Words like solid, thorough, and competent are what most come to mind for the game; it's made by one person, and while that shows in the simple graphics, outside of that it's extremely stable, and offers a well balanced challenge. There are better games out there, but also so many that are far worse. If you aren't too fussed about graphics or story, and are in the mood for a classic collectathon game, Kit's Quest is an easy recommend.
I saw this game on a Kick stream and it looked fun so I wanted to try. Did not disappoint, I definitely enjoyed it! What gets me is that you can spend half an hour beating a spider boss to get a dragon tooth, and then chase down a rabbit in 20 seconds for the same reward. As far as I can tell you don’t even need all the dragon teeth to get to new levels, so it’s really tempting to just pick the easier collectables unless you’re a completionist.
This game heavily reminded me of early installments in Spyro game. Especially the fact that Kit head-rams obstacles and enemies. Upsides: + Beautiful level scenery. + Fluffy foxes. Downsides: - A bit too much dimension control. Best platformers are 2.5D imho. - Playing with keyboard is harder then I would like. - 3D properties of objects. It may take a lot of attempts to climb a simple cliff. Will I play more? I think yes. But I'll need a darn controller. Do I recommend it? I think yes. I would like to see more games featuring foxes.
