At a Glance

(Adult) Content Yes. (F, FxF) Sexual content.

Censorship No. Woot! Woot!

Hours of Gameplay An hour or two.

Modding Support? No.

Patch Required? No.

King of Volleyball is an "adult" virtual novel about a couple's relationship and winning the volleyball championship.
Gameplay
There isn't much else to do than smashing through text boxes, as per most virtual novels. There is a handful of choices to make, which may change how characters react and how the game ends.
Story
Before the story begins, a message from the game's writer crops up. Annie Cho wants us to know that lesbians have feelings, and can be strong and romantic. She thinks that lesbians are neglected in the face of heterosexual couples. I disagree, considering the number of lesbian virtual novels for sale, but I digress. Let's talk about the game. The setting is Coconut Bay, US Virgin islands. The main character's name is Kiera, and she's an alcoholic. She is approached by a coach named Natalia, and she wants her to provide consultation for the Miami Beach University Women's Beach Volleyball Team (or MBUWBVT.) That's. . . a mouthful. Anyways, the two members of the team, Eunice and Suzy are having some trouble. They have a big game, but they aren't themselves. Natalia hires Kiera to try 'n get their "mojo" back, so that their respective school can win the International Volleyball Tournament. Eunice is a die-hard workaholic, and she's dead-set on being the best. Suzy is a happy-go-lucky, blissful girl. The former had a (very) authoritarian upbringing, while the latter enjoyed a very lax lifestyle. As it turns out, they aren't just teammates. They're lovers. Kiera is able to catch-on, as she too is a lesbian. As a matter of fact, Kiera is known as the legendary (beaver) hunter, because, well. . . I don't think I need to explain in detail. But as far as she was concerned, every beaver on the beach was fair game. If you ask me, Kiera sounds like a sexual predator. There are multiple possible endings, so how the story adjourns may differ from playthrough-to-playthrough. But the premise stays the same. Kiera is tasked with making Eunice and Suzy to start playing good again, and how their relationship ends is up to you, the (beaver) hunter.
Visuals
The title screen was basic, and unimpressive. You can start or load a game, or view your gallery. You can only access settings from in-game. Why they aren't accessible from the title screen perplexes me, but I found them eventually. In-game, you have all of the tools you'd expect a virtual novel to have, including a "log" in case you miss something. The backgrounds differed in style between scenes, shifting from a stereotypical, cartoony style to a painterly one. As the portraits are drawn in an anime style, everything clashes. I would have liked to have seen more consistency between the art assets. - The Goods - There are four full art scenes, each playthrough earning one or two. They are actually very high quality, but I didn't see anything too saucy. There's definitely nudity and some skin-on-skin contact, but sexual content is strictly text-based. It short-lived, so don't buy this game expecting a saucy night.
Verdict
This virtual novel didn't impress me. I grew bored more than once, and the characters didn't feel believable. I did laugh out loud a few times, so props to the comedy. If you're on the market for a strictly okay, sports-related virtual novel, this could be your game. If you like my reviews, it helps a lot when we're followed! Thank you!
King of Volleyball is a cute and fun visual novel with an emphasis on your character, a sort of sports fitness life coach type of freelance problem solver, is approached by a manager for two gals that are suddenly not performing well on their beach volleyball. They were considered some of the best at the college/university level, but suddenly their chemistry and coordination were just “off” for some reason, so their manager has come to you to see if you can pick their brains, ask difficult questions, and see what’s made their game suddenly change. The VN gives you choices as you go along, with several story outcomes, about five in total. While each is not very long, but reasonably long enough of a read to be quite interesting, The choices you’re given will have various outcomes on the overall story, and how things play out. There is a good mix of witty humor, presented in a flowing way, and it’s quite sensible and stays very realistic. The key ideas behind a work like this is that it does maintain a good practical sensibility about it, while still allowing the suggestive dialog to roll on out, which in turn makes it all the more intriguing of a read. One of the outcomes was quite difficult for me to figure out, as I tried many different combinations, skipping around bits I’d read over a few times, trying other ideas with each of the two players as I interacted with them, but Suzy’s ending was very tough, while the others happened pretty often, if you kinda did what made sense. It was weird, so I don’t know which choices created the final outcome, but I eventually got it. Was confusing there a bit, and not as open and straight-forward as some of the other endings seemed to be. The asking price for a read this size is probably pretty good on a sale. It’s only at $4 USD initially, which is pretty good! On sale, even better! It has a pretty good bit of substance, but it’s not going to take you many hours to get through, as each arc is fairly similar, with only choices changing some of the dialog or possible outcomes. The overall context remains fairly similar outside of that, so you still kinda do a similar route in each eventual outcome. Not a lot of nudity until some of the endings, with just some slight reveals. It’s not way over-the-top with it, but the wording is a bit more eroge in its connotation at various times.
Pros
It’s fairly balanced at the price it’s at. I still like the idea of grabbing on sale, but it’s not a huge ask for the amount of material in the visual novel itself. I finished all routes in about three and a half hours. Your character and the other characters are interesting enough and feel like they have identities. Keeps it interesting with their various temperaments, philosophies, and overall personification. Makes for a nice story having this really ingrained in the reading. This touches on some great issues that are considered “taboo”, and shedding some light on it in a provocative way without being forceful in obligating the reader to agree or disagree with it. Just presented in a nice concise way, as the characters would be living it in a real-life kind of experience. There’s some interesting humor, and some references from whatever’s going on in their world with these same references. I have seen in a few reads by this developer so far some mentions of the same names and other small bits, but it gave it more life in a way, as though they have their own events in that world, and popular spots, important people, and little things like that popping up. Hard to explain what I mean. I like that they decided to transcend beyond one writing, and sort of sneak little bits in that are side parts, but still talked about by the characters in each. The end CG drawing material is very small in the overall context of this visual novel, but it’s cute and short. No acts, just reveals, so it’s more like a look-see, rather than a porn game wrapped inside a graphic novel. The word context is fairly heavy in parts though, so it’s a lot more reading context than actual skin and whatnot. I’d like to see more, personally, but I’m adding this to pros for those that would prefer very light elements. Still NSFW! Definitely wouldn’t want your unaware folks dropping in and reading along, unless they want to. Various choices, various endings. The story can change based on your choice array, but it feels a bit boxed in and limited as to what really does what in this one. This one’s mixed. Choices matter though! It has a nice atmosphere, and is light-hearted, warm and overall has a great feeling to it. It’s not earth-shattering work, but for the price, enough efforts were put in to really give this a look for those who may be curious. It’s a good one to have in the collection for the avid reader! Make sure you know what you’re getting into though! Not an all audiences kind of theme, if you get my drift. Special thanks to Simetria League for their support!
Cons
It could use more content and story drive overall. It feels like it’s a little bit flat at parts, but then there are other parts that flourish fairly well! Still rather weak, especially where choices sometimes don’t seem to determine very much in the overall grand scheme, or you figure out one choice that makes or breaks an ending. Needs more nudity! I wish there was a bit more instead of just ending stuff. Not enough revealing parts, which could have complemented the reading content a bit more. You only interact with a handful of characters, so variation, and story, and choices are kind of limited and basic. Would have been fun with more characters and more attitude in the mix as a result. The one ending I mentioned above was very cryptic and confusing for me. Needs fine tuning and balance so each ending is fairly even in your chance to get one or another route opened or closed off. Structure could improve overall. A bit short in the long run, and it is repetitive in how the flow happens, regardless of your choices. I’d like to see more variation.
Conclusion
Overall, worth it at its asking price. This is a fairly solid visual novel which should get a little more attention, to say the least. It’s right near that sweet spot of being not too short, not too long. I had a nice time reading through, though I wanted more nudie pictures! I hope there is one that’s a lot more risque down the road! Good developer, kind to speak with, and supportive of the gaming community and our efforts we put in to make things happen on the curator and review front. Reviews are essential, and a big draw sometimes if done right and potentially attention-grabbing. Please do consider supporting those that would gladly support you in the same regard, given that “if the shoe was on the other foot” philosophy. Due to character limitations, I had to cut the end and add it in comments. This was an amazing visual novel/dating sim! The writing is witty and the story has funny moments, introspective moments and dramatic moments. Gotta be honest, I both laughed and cried as this reminded me so much of my current relationship and how my girlfriend and I met. She reminds me so much of Eunice!! I'm definitely going to show her this game later today. The game has a good amount of choices and you can definitely see how they have an effect on what ending you get. So far I've only gotten one ending but am looking to get other endings soon too. I also really want to applaud how realistic and well-fleshed out the characters are. Like I said earlier, Eunice reminds me SO much of girlfriend. She is definitely my favorite character in this game! I also really wanna give props to the writer for her sensitive portrayal of LGBTQ characters and the struggles people in the LGBTQ community go through. Bravo to her for bringing these to the table in this game and helping the cause. Recommended!
Pensé que era UN buen juego, El resultado es una basura
Where to start with this. I would like to say that I often review yuri novels and have a huge collection of them. Many are great to read and are often either heartwarming or a gut punch. At least something for you enjoy and experience someone's life through a story. Perhaps you can learn from it and come to your own judgement. Immersive yourself.
This visual novel
You're Kiera Marley, a once pro soccer player that is now a counselor. She is given the task to help out two upcoming stars in a volleyball game - Suzy and Eunice. These two were in a relationship before arriving and are in a tightrope situation. That is where you come in to help out. Its length is about 1 to 2 hours. The novel itself does play out as its suppose to. However, there is this filler and unnecessary amount of dialogue that doesn't really focus itself on what the story is trying to be about. I get that we're trying to get a understanding of the character's backstory but it is too much explanation that it kinda made me wish it was explained as the plot progress.
Characters
Not going to lie but the protagonist of this story who is Kiera, A 39 old woman that said "Fam" kinda threw me off because like I never heard someone of that age say that. Anyways, she is weird and comes off rather creepy when the comment is about a certain subject. Like can you please keep all those details to yourself before coming off awkward? The rest of the cast were fine to me. They didn't really stick out.
Art
I do like the visual and art design behind it. Very colorful and really the character's design.
Music
Very chill out music, not much to say but it is good though.
Conclusion
I am not going to comment on the message left by Annie Cho. She is free to do whatever she wish and I do support LGBTQ+ - but keep in mind that there is plenty of female protagonist out there. Theme to what this visual novel trying to accomplish. I do thank you for writing this story but it didn't change my perspective.
只能說質量越來越差了
Personally, I did not like the script for this game. It feels like it was written by a horny-teenager. That said, the characters and backgrounds look great, although the CG h-scenes are probably the best part of the game.
Uma história tocante sobre a realidade LGBTQ no nosso mundo. Os meus parabéns à activista que criou uma história romântica para este jogo. 10/10
