About
A free-roaming squad based RPG focusing on open-ended sandbox gameplay features rather than a linear story. Be a trader, a thief, a rebel, a warlord, an adventurer, a farmer, a slave, or just food for the cannibals.

Research new equipment and craft new gear. Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business. Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh desert. Train your men up from puny victims to master warriors. Carry your wounded squad mates to safety and get them all home alive.
Freeform gameplay in a seamless game world in the largest single-player RPG world since Daggerfall, stretching over 870 square kilometers. The game will never seek to limit you or restrict your personal play style.
Custom design as many characters as you want and build up a whole squad to fight for you. Characters will grow and become stronger with experience, not just in their stats but their appearance too.
Build a base where you can research new technologies, upgrade your defences and craft new gear.

Original take on the RTS-RPG hybrid genre. No "hero" characters with artificially stronger stats than everybody else- Every character and NPC you meet is potentially an equal, and has a name, a life.

You are not the chosen one. You're not great and powerful. You don't have more 'hitpoints' than everyone else. You are not the centre of the universe, and you are not special. Unless you work for it.

Purchase and upgrade your own buildings to use as safe fortified havens when things go bad, or use them to start up a business.

Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a businessman, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city. Devote yourself to freeing slaves, or maybe end up a slave yourself.

Dynamic, ever changing world. Support or hinder whoever you wish, or keep to yourself, the world won't stop moving. This is not just a "game", you are living and surviving in a simulated world.

Get captured by cannibals and eaten alive, or sold off by slavers and forced to work in the mines. These are not scripted events, just a regular part of this chaotic world that ruins your life by chance. Anything can happen, yet anything can be overcome if you have the strength.

Absolutely no Level-scaling. The world does not level up along with you, and the shops don't change their inventory to only items matching your level. At the start of the game almost everyone will be stronger than you, and survival will always be a struggle. The game won't hold your hand or help you when you're down.

Realistic medical system that affects gameplay. A character with a wounded leg will limp or crawl and slow the party down, wounded arms means you must use your sword one-handed or not at all. Severe injuries will result in amputees needing robotic limb replacements. Blood loss means you can pass out, and the blood will attract predators. A character’s stats are affected by equipment, encumbrance, blood loss, injuries and starvation.

Intelligent AI that allows for characters to reason and work towards long-term goals and desires. Squads work together and carry their wounded to safety. Characters can be setup to take care of micromanagement for you and run production in your base.

Aid or oppose the various factions in the world while striving for the strength and wealth necessary to simply survive in the harsh environment.

Independently developed with no design influences, or alterations dictated by men in grey suits who have never played a game before in their lives.

Original game world. There are no fantasy-knock-off clichés. No magic.

This game often feels half baked and like it failed to use the many lessons learned by the gaming industry since 1990. Often the lore is inaccessible unless you really spend time looking for it. Often the systems are kind of shoddy, and I need to open the Shift-F12 edit mode to fix a bug with base building. Often my faction spends all day picking up an iron bar out of a box, and putting it back into the same box, because the AI logic is just lacking. That said: I. Do. Not. Care. Because this game is so unique, inspired, versatile, interesting, and open. It actually innovates, and when it comes to gaming I'm more interested in new & good ideas. And this has 'em. In my opinion Kenshi founds (or maybe popularizes) a fundamentally new genre: the Open-Ended RPG. So give me the bugs. The ass graphics and lag on my 4090. Because I'll take Kenshi, a game made with love by an amateur, that actually does something interesting, over some AAA profit-driven loot-box packed dopamine-dispensing, uninspired, re-hashed nonsense. Any. Day. And I am excited for what the future may hold, if we ever get a Kenshi 2
**Recommended** I almost refunded Kenshi. For my first 50 hours I thought it was broken, empty, and unfair. 450 hours later... I sat down at 10 AM intending to play for an hour. I looked at the clock and it was 7 AM the next day. It started with Prince, a one armed man stranded in the desert. Prince almost didn't make it to his first meal. Literally collapsing twenty times before he reached the gates of Sho-Battai with nothing but a dead mans chainmail shirt to pay for food. Eventually he met Dirt. Then Mel. Then everything went completely off the rails. Dirt got enslaved. Instead of immediately rescuing her, she stayed because slavery turned out to be the best lockpicking and stealth school in the United Cities. Then she stole a meatwrap. That single stolen meatwrap somehow escalated into a camp-wide war. Prince walked into the active battlefield disguised as an ordinary visitor, patched Dirt up, rented her a bed **inside the slave camp**, then casually walked back out the front gate. Dirt decided she still wasn't finished training. The camp became so overcrowded they literally ran out of cages. I watched a guard use his shoulder as a prison cell. I recruited a prisoner who decided I'd make a better boss than his captors. Prince was later captured by Sand Ninjas... ...only to become friends with one in prison. The same Sand Ninja later broke Prince out after I got caught trying to free him. Mel, meanwhile, completely ignored the chaos, bought the squad a house, and started researching beds like the only functioning adult in the group. Dirt eventually escaped... ...put on a disguise in front of the guards... ...picked her shackles... ...walked out the main gate... ...then decided she wasn't actually done yet. She rented a bed **inside the slave bar**, slept next to an off-duty guard, woke up, walked past the guards again, and got told to "get back to work." She wasn't sneaking. She wasn't running. She was basically roleplaying being a slave whenever it was convenient. None of this was a quest. No dialogue. No cutscenes. No scripted prison break. Just hundreds of systems colliding until I ended up with a story no writer would've dared pitch because nobody would believe a video game could generate it. People always ask, "What's the point of Kenshi?" This is the point. I thought Kenshi was empty. Kenshi is a decade-old program that somehow achieved sentience... but it's trying very hard to convince you it's just a video game. PRO TIP: Play on 1x speed. Never save scum. 10/10.
Loaded in with man and dog, march to civilization, not really civilization but a tribe, tribe cuts my legs off, tribe throw me in cell, tribe kill dog infront of me then eat it. 10/10 would play again
I've played this game a little. Probably time to give it a thumbs up. It's janky and the game engine is very dated. But it captures something that keeps me coming back. Something precious and hard to define that is missing from most other games. Be warned, however, you either get Kenshi or you don't. You'll know where you stand fairly quickly. for me it's a beautiful, imperfect, spectacular, messy, imaginative, rough, brilliant, sadistically cruel, fantastically original, sublimely written, broken mess of a game. And I love it.
I feel like it's one of those games you're either going to hate or play like an absolute maniac. It's janky, buggy, and barely explains anything. You'll get your ass kicked over and over again, yet somehow it has this unique charm that's hard to resist. I hesitated to buy it for quite a while because I was afraid it would be too difficult and frustrating. In the end, though, I absolutely loved it. It gave me this strange nostalgic feeling, like being a kid again and playing a game for the first time - having no clue what the hell was going on, yet somehow having the time of my life. I think everyone should give this game a try, unless you're the type of player who really needs clear direction, quest markers, and structured objectives to enjoy a game.
I got Kenshi because of a few reviews i read on steam that were so compelling i had to try this game. I am an older gamer now as in i remember the first Adventure game which was literally called Adventure. Kenshi captures this word in its entirety ADVENTURE is what your in for and it delivers. In a bleak world somehow it feels whole. Never before have a felt so vested in my characters, especially the first ones i found that made life better. From my first Dog as a puppy to watching him almost die every fight to now having to leave him back with the base FNGs because he hits to hard to train skills up to watching Ruka become a beast the game has not disapointed in leting me build my own narative. Watching my wife get eating limb by limb while i lay on the ground bleeding in the Fog for the first time was a turn of events for me. at 167 hours into the game i still feel new. I could go ojn and on forever but im a pretty slow typer and would rather be playing Kenshi so ill leave you with this. Kenshi is a game that will live on in your memory long after you are finished with it, like a good movie you will be sad when its over. Thankfully there will be a Kenshi 2. We should try to support this Dev it will be worth it.
The game really needs a story mode to teach you how to play the game. I don't have the patience to spend a dozen hours just trying to learn the basics.
