Kemono Mahjong

Arguably the easiest way of learning Riichi Mahjong. And you've guessed right, I'm here because of Yakuza.

If you're looking for a safe, no-pressure environment in which to learn how to play Riichi Mahjong, and if you're also looking for a safe, no-pressure environment in which to learn how to avoid common pitfalls in Riichi Mahjong, then this gives you what you're looking for. The interface is very simple and approachable. It doesn't [currently] have the large player base of, say, Mahjong Soul, but if you're new to the game, that's a serious plus. While multiplayer technically exists, you're going to be hard-pressed to find others who use this particular Riichi client, but again, if you're new, that's a selling point: you don't get steamrolled by other human players. The AI players will tease you for taking too long on a discard, but there's no discard timer, so you get the space to think about what you're doing. The tutorial is excellent even on its own, but you're going to want to do your own research afterwards. That's going to be the case no matter what client you use; Riichi just drives you to keep learning! Overall, this makes for a friendly, educational environment for learning the game. Even experienced players will enjoy themselves. I very highly recommend it.

I learned how to play Mahjong from this :) Simple, allows you to play against CPUs, and a good introduction to Riichi Majong

A nice introduction to riichi style mahjong without the pressure of online play. Has a decent tutorial, but don't feel bad if it takes you going through it a couple times to figure everything out. Tip for super newbies: You should generally aim for a riichi (riichi are closed-only! no melds!) if you don't see any obvious yaku in your draw. If you open your hand, do it on something like a pong of dragons or prevailing/seated wind, so it adds to your hand score; or else you won't be able to call a win!

i recommend this game for learning how to play, but it feels as if the computers know what youre holding and what you are going to do. also noticed thst a lot of the tiles you discard, they will give you them again next 2 turns. its happened every hand ive played in this game. idk if its the odds of it happening or what.

Its aight for 6 bucks. The furries are so poorly drawn it actually kills me though. I wish you could toggle the sprites.

Prolly one the best ways to play Riichi Mahjong with AI opponents. It lets you play without being forced to make fast moves and allows you to really think about your hand. It has a handbook that you can pull up at any point to check which yakus you might want to aim for, so all in all a good tool to learn how to play the game. My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be a way to program keyboard controls and you have to manually click the ignore button for chis and pon a lot, but i still enjoy playing it non the less. Before this i used to play a flash game that did the same thing (and it's still a good page if all you wanted to do is look up the different hands to reference), but sadly it died when the flash player did so this is a nice alternative for it that and i play from time to time when i have nothing to do and want to play something quick that involves some brain power. Not really the best for online though, If you wanted to play online against other people then Mahjong Soul is better, that said humans player in that game all tend to go for the fastest and cheapest hands all the time so you really have no time to go for anything decent (yes i'm salty lol). Otherwise online Tenhou is best if you want to play against people that admitantly leave all the time, but at least stay to try for better hands.
