Well I make it through chapter 1 of 3 but I just can't take any more and I'm uninstalling and placing in a "I'm never want to play this game again" pile. The puzzles range from the logical (rare), to lateral thinking, to the majority which are trick questions. I don't know if the developers were running out of ideas or if the translations are just awful, but some of the questions are worded atrociously so you're scratching your head to work out what is being asked, and the solutions to some of the lateral thinking and trick questions are just awful. The "story" is boring, and the "conversations" are banal. Give this one a miss, it's not worth the pain.
i review games on steam after i 100% complete them! check out my reviews to see all the games i have completed! the academy is a puzzle-based adventure game that is very reminiscent of a harry potter game. this game is filled with logic-based puzzles, which are fun but can become old after a while of constantly running back and forth completing them. also the translations can be a little weird and some puzzles are confusing as a result of the shoddy translations. despite the cons, this game is actually pretty fun and i enjoyed grabbing every achievement and 100%'ing the game.
I generally enjoy Pine Studio. I've played a ton of Escape Simulator (standard and VR), Cats in Time, and All the Faraway games. I just found this game to be boring. I rarely abandon a game before finishing it, but I just couldn't with this game. The game says it's a puzzle game, but I wouldn't call it that. You are basically taking tests with weirdly worded questions that don't always make sense. The answer is provided for you after you get it right, and sometimes it still didn't make sense. The questions frequently try to mislead you with it's wording. It regularly expects you to know you should have violated the rules the question set forth. The game is not very interactive. There is only one 3D jigsaw puzzle you do a few times, and it's not even a puzzle. The pieces rotate into the correct orientation for you, so it's not challenging. Walking around feels sluggish and clunky. There is a book hidden with a puzzle each day, in case you want to wander around aimlessly checking every spot in the game for that day. There is a story, and it was somewhat interesting, albeit a bit juvenile. It wasn't interesting enough to convince me to finish the game though. The price point is more than fair, so it wasn't a huge investment to find out if it was good or not.
The Academy is basically Professor Layton set at a boarding school. So you have the mystery, friendship, adventures, mean teachers, etc. of boarding school fiction (like HP or other similar cultural touchstones) but the main mechanic is completing Layton style logic puzzles. The game looks great, it's got nice music, the characters are nice, the writing is fine (there are parts where it feels a bit "English as a Second Language", but it's fine). The story is pretty meaty and it took me 10 hours to finish the entire game. But the puzzles are quite bad. And that's a real problem when the game is a puzzle game. A numerical majority of the puzzles involve, more or less, figuring out what the "trick" in the puzzle writing is. This is not fun. An example, paraphrased is "At 11PM there are 4 fireflies. Every hour, a new firefly shows up. After 12 hours, how many fireflies are shining their lights?" and the answer is "0, because it's daylight now". Here's another one "Scientists need to mark four frogs for observation. How many different colours would it take to mark the frogs?" Answer: "1, because you could place marks on different locations to tell the frogs apart". It's extremely juvenile. These kinds of joke puzzles are a part of Layton and Puzzle Agent and others in the genre, but they're a very small part and here they're a huge part. Sometimes the puzzles involve relying on contrivances; say, you have a series of circuit boards connected to each other with wires, and you need to fill in the serial number of a circuit board... and the trick is that you can see something resembling a number in the pile of wires. This is not a hard puzzle, that's clearly the answer, but it makes no real sense: why would the arrangement of the wires be the same as the serial number? Other puzzles are trivially easy ("1159, ____, 1201, 1202. Fill in the blank"). There are 200 puzzles -- well, actually, 100 puzzles that each have two mini puzzles -- and of those 200, I'd say maybe 20-30 are what I'd consider to be actually interesting puzzles. That's an atrociously low hit rate. You could maybe argue the simple puzzles are designed for a kid's audience, but because so many rely on deceptive text or plays on words I would think kids will like it even less. Besides the puzzles there are classroom segments where you are asked pop quizzes about material to be found in books. This has the opportunity to be interesting, but 100% of the material quizzed about is about the founder of the in-game school. I think it makes sense for boarding school fiction to have an internal mythology, but not at the expense of also being a school that makes sense. It feels really crappy to say so much bad about a game that has an awful lot going for it. I'd still vote thumbs up because it looks good and it's sort of got a soothing rhythm in how you go through day after day in the school and make friends and get into adventures. But it's a very mild thumbs up, because they had one important job and they didn't get it right. The developers later made the simple but fun Cats in Time and the great Escape Simulator, both of which I'd recommend over this.
Never finished this game. It was very simple and boring for me. There is potential here. The game worked well and functioned, it just wasn't fun or engaging. I put it down quickly. The puzzles were also far too easy for me.
