Wow. Damn. You know that feeling you get when you see the trailer for this game with the rock music? Either of them. That vibe. It's consistently captured throughout. If you don't feel a certain way when watching the trailer then you're probably going to miss half the fun. Do you have to ever have gone on a road trip to "get" this game? No. Do you have to be a gear-head irl? No. Do you need to be an 80's/90's/whatever baby? Absolutely not. But you need to be able to appreciate the vibe of looking back on a journey not had by any one person, but had collectively, by all of us, in little vignettes of travel, passed on through our own experiences and the stories we tell about them. To be honest, I thought this game was trying to capture the feel of an era from before my time. When it loaded up the opening text and revealed it's supposed to be set in the early 2000's, I had to do a double-take. How can this, the story of The Great American Road Trip, be set in an era that I could have experienced it? How could it be so disconnected from the internet, cell phones, 9/11, and all the rest? Moreover, how could it be made in Europe??? Well, on the one hand, that's art for you, it's possible to effectively convey a story with details you've never experienced. But the second part is that the disconnect is an essential aspect of the story. Being disconnected from your home, from your career, from your friends, from social mores and expectations, these are the things that can drive someone to set out on a journey like this in the first place. By ripping up your roots and committing to living out of your car, you're embracing the chaotic, scary, exciting truth that our lives are always transient, impermanent things. It's not about any one era that happened, it's about the kind of experience anyone could have, but told through a specific aesthetic lens. It's embracing the struggle to support yourself as you try to scrounge together some cash to buy a banana. Or facing hardship to save up for something a little more permanent, like a portable stovepot, so you can cook up some cheap ramen and a coffee to get you through the next leg of your journey. It's taking people into your lives, for however long that lasts, inviting them to spend time with you as you each move towards different, perhaps even eventually diverging, goals. It's letting those people go who hurt you more than they help you. It's the funny, unexpected moments, like BIRD THAT WON'T MOVE, or COW! It's a coming upon a car crash, knowing one of the drivers is dead with absolute certainty, and knowing there's nothing you can do for the other as she grieves what she's done, except to sit with her a moment, and let her know the world's still there. Beyond just the vibes this game is able to capture, the gameplay loop is seriously entertaining, letting you build up your skillset and flex your new style just long enough to not be boring, before you obtain a victory and start all over again. Meanwhile, it delivers some fantastically-stylized art assets and a killer soundtrack that's so much fun to collect and browse on the journey. Gosh, what more is there to say? It's just one of those perfect games that you'll never forget playing.
Love it
A beautiful road trip and turn-based roguelike fighting game. I couldn't afford AC and my first run nearly ended when I was stuck in a traffic jam in the desert. I survived thanks to my "eco-driving" card and help from the mechanic hitchhiking in my backseat. Then after making it to a gas station, a hippie gave me a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ WEREWOLF ASSO CD. Best game ever lol.
