The combo building system in this game is brilliant! I really enjoy stringing combos together, and its almost fighting-game-esque with the way you have to position yourself between attacks. There are definitely gripes I have, but this one is a hidden gem. I enjoy: - Build unique combos. 1-6 auto played through sequences, you mix and match. - Movement. You can jump off walls, slide under whiteboards, kip over desks, etc. - Guns. Shoot guys who are clearly unarmed and just squaring up, its great! - Playtime. You can play this game w/ 1.5x speed active, great for those "I got 10 minutes!" type games. I do not fw: - Items take priority. Idk if I'm just dumb, but I can't drop items? I have to pick them up? I don't enjoy being forced to use something 1/2 as effective as my combo. - Lag. When you get 100s of enemies on screen, it has chugged for me. Vampire Survivors for example will have an entire screen filled and not lag. - Meta Grind. Feels grindy in the end game, but its optional anyway (I didn't need to grind to beat the 1st difficulty on all 5 levels just as a heads up). +Recommended! I became Jacky Chan in the 90s for about 5 hours, and I would suggest you enjoy that experience as well. Its cheap. Its quality. Its not going to be your 1000 hour everyday (...maybe it will). This is a no brainer on sale. Full price I still feel you get your $ worth.
Woman comes home complaining, complaining, complaining. Playing Karate survivor. She says "what's that stupid game you're playing?", I replied "who's to say it's stupid, I'm playing it." She says it's like "that vampire game". She sits on couch and sighs, repeatedly. I'm the zen master, absorbed in the game. Hours later, she goes to bed in a huff, but Still playing at 11pm. Happy. Without guilt. Thanks for giving me my life back - if only for a night. ;-)
Love the game, but would really love to see more characters added. Plenty of wonderful stars of martial arts cinema from the 80s that would be great to tribute here, particularly the ladies who get so much less representation and accolades than they deserve. Characters based on Maggie Cheung, Cynthia Rothrock, Michelle Yeoh, Etsuko Shihomi, etc.
If you smashed together Vampire Survivors and Police Story it would be Karate Survivors. It's the mashup that I didn't know I wanted or needed. Who doesn't want to be Jackie Chan? Basic Vampire Survivors style gameplay. Has a bit of programming and requires some timing to your attacks. Could take a bit of getting used to if you have played other survivor games. But, overall it's a good time. Especially for the price. It is great on the steam deck and has some decent meta progression. At first legendary difficulty seems impossible. But, as you unlock more upgrades it becomes easier. This can make the game feel grindy when you first start. You will be playing the first level for a while. Achievement Hunters: Fairly straight forward achievements. Beating the game on legendary wasn't as hard as I first anticipated. Once you are fully upgraded you slap pretty hard with any decent build. Getting the Shurikans was by far the hardest to get. Just due to the amount of runs it takes to accomplish.
