This game is very much like an old Sierra game called Emperor. However the buildings are more detailed. The most noticeable feature is the market arrangements Anyone who has played Sierra will say yes i've seen that before. Do not let that put you off. The feeling's maybe the same but the game is not. Graphics and detail are excellent for games in this price range. When the game lights up at night you can not help but say wow. There is a call for soldiers so you people who like a bit of a scrap will not be dissapointed. It is a game that also has what most westerners do not have and what our far Eastern friends do have lots off and that's Patience so be warned because you will need it. If you wish to argue with my comments remember us old folks are not put off by a life sentence.

I have a hard time reviewing this game. It doesn't do anything new or really special, the UI is old fashioned, the game is clunky in more ways than one, and it's basically just a simpler Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom. But somehow I had a lot of fun with it. It has a similar puzzle element as the old Impressions games. There is always a rock where it shouldn't be. Or the map is cut in half by a mountain and it's a long track to get to the other side, or you can only import very limited resources so you have to calculate how many houses you want to evolve, but if you don't evolve houses it can be pretty hard to make money (things are expensive and trading is quite limited). Once you figure out how the logistics works, the city building is very flexible, you don't really have to make efficient blocks. What I liked: -Flexible building, there are many ways to design your cities, which is nice -Working military. It's pretty much the same as Caesar III's (with the awkward control and all), but you can upgrade them as they gain experience. And speaking of upgrades... -Attention to detail. There are so many small visual details in the game. You can see what the trading ship imports or exports. You can tell how far the silk mill is in production by looking at the racks in front of the store. When you upgrade the troops, the new gear appears on them. The more you look, the more things you'll find. -The night view. It's really pretty. To the point that I sometimes just switch to night, and I'm someone who pretty much always turns off night mode in strategy games. -Gotta think. You can't just slap together a city, and call it a day. You really have to be careful, if you upgrade too many buildings, suddenly you run out of food. Or booze. Or pottery. Or all the above. Well with the exception of shanty towns. You can bring in as many workers as you want and just keep them in a separate block, never feeding them, because... Things I don't like: -There isn't much complexity. There is no town mood, so you can just keep your workforce in shanty towns and starve them forever. There is no sickness, no diplomacy, no events apart from the occasional invasion on military maps. The only hazard is fire, but as long as an inspector tower is within reach, you'll never get a fire. -Same with the buildings, there isn't that much. You have 1 type of food, ceramics, booze, tea, silk and spice (which can only be imported) for house upgrades, the service buildings, couple industrial buildings, decorations, and more or less that's it. Oh, there is 2 monuments too, but in the campaign you build them only once. -The UI. It's not the worst, I'm not even sure it's worse than the old Impressions games. But it could be better for sure. And I'd pay for an undo button and some more statistics, like predicted consumption of goods (the farms show consumed food, but no prediction, so you better pull out the calculator). And for the love of God, why is there no copy in the warehouse's settings, when every single warehouse has 4 blocks you have to configure, and you do your logistics by priority in the warehouse settings. -You can't change font size, most of the audio sliders didn't really work for me, the resolution options are somewhat wonky (in the end i just played in a window with a resolution I found acceptable) Other things of note: -The graphics are not great. I love the visuals, and I find the low frame animation of the sprites quite charming, but I can see how it can be off-putting (and because of the tick rate and low frame animations sometimes you can feel like the game is lagging and struggling to keep up, when it is not actually the case) -The way the warehouses/logistics work is pretty interesting. A warehouse can send out as many cart pushers as the blocks you configured (so 4 tops), and if you connect them by two disconnected roads, they can serve two sides so you can totally separate blocks if you want to. Really nice. I just wish I didn't have to click so many times to configure everything. -The controls are exactly as clunky as they are in Impressions games. Take it as it is. -I didn't really run into any bugs, the only one i remember was on the last map, when two warehouses refused to send out cart pushers for some reason. It was fixed after rebuilding them, and I'm still not sure what happened there, that was the only time I caught something like that. -The campaign has about a dozen missions + another half a dozen single maps (and it's not like the campaign has any connection between maps). And I doubt there will be any more. It's still dozens of hours to go through them, at least. I think I rambled enough for now, but there is barely any info on this game, so hopefully this will help someone. Overall this is a love letter to Emperor if we are kind and it's just a copy if we are cynical. But it's clear that the creator enjoyed the logistics/struggling for resources in the Impressions games and they made pretty much every map like that. If you like those old greats, and disappointed in the lack of puzzle solving in the more modern city builders, this might just be the game for you. If you just want to build whatever you want, this game is not really that. Overall, I feel this is kinda a hidden gem, and I'm quite happy I bought it. Just don't get frustrated the first time your city destabilizes because you ran out of food, once you figure out logistics, production ratios, consumption, etc. you won't really run into that issue anymore.
