JAWS: Retro Edition

Out of all the re-releases and remasters that have come out, I never thought to see this "gem". Come confirm you can play the original and an enhanced edition of the game. It's an interesting beast. It's like an underwater RPG thing.

I've seen people calling this game a cash grab, etc. Honestly? I don't get it. It is an unlikely candidate for a modern overhaul but I think that's what made it all the more welcome so far as I'm concerned. To be fair though, I'm biased as the original was one of my faves as a kid. You'll find the original here and it seems to be completely untouched, really aside from probably some upscaling or whatever. The CRT filter seemed better than many. It's.. well, the original Jaws. The extended edition makes use of the original game's framework to deliver what theoretically might have been if the original dev team had been given more time and resources. I loved it. Then, as mentioned, I'm biased. I would have liked to have seen a different kill the shark mini-game at the end of each chapter as opposed to what is obviously a "How do we make this work with what's already in the game" scenario. The upgrades and game play seem to undergo this gradual metamorphasis until by the end it almost feels like you're playing shooter. It's wild! The addition of a life meter over the one hit death system means you don't have to be afraid of getting speed powerups that would lead to interia colisions with enemies. This one change really revamps the gameplay in a way that is a massive improvement. That's honestly about the only thing negative I can say about it. It's a short playthrough (not as short as the original but hey, what is xD) but it's just right, honestly. I finished it in a very leisurely 5 hours while pausing frequently to do other things. (thanks ADHD) So yeah, if you like the original this is a no brainer especially on sale but really, I think 15 bucks is pretty fair.

I loved this game growing up and really appreciate LRG bringing it back for a modern platform. While I realize that many people nowadays may have heard about this game from reviewers with many different backgrounds and differing opinions, the arcade-like gameplay was amazing for those of us back in the 80's/early 90's. It is not for everyone, but it is overall a great win for those of us that respect older game preservation.

I was pretty surprised by this game. There are two versions. The classic 1987 version and a new improved version. The new version of the game features multiple stages representing each of the 4 movies. Even when playing the original, it's odd because I just don't think it's as bad as what a lot of people have said over the years. No it's certainly not amazing, but surprisingly good. My biggest complaint is absolutely the price. I'm sure it has to do with the copyright and universal but $15 for a game that is almost 40 years old is pretty extreme.

JAWS: Retro Edition is a blast from the past, if you like myself watched the AVGN video and were curious definitely pick this up. The game includes the original NES Jaws and a romhack of sorts called "Enhanced Edition" the classic NES one functions as you imagine, gather shells, upgrade ship, kill Jaws! the enhanced edition however adds different chapters, where you have to hunt specific enemies to unlock a weapon part or upgrade, as well as costing money, the extra quests take a 15 minute short game and turn it into a 3+ hour game, that's how long it took me to get 100% of the achievements) One thing I do want to talk about is the excellent CRT filters available, you can customise it to add bloom, make it sharper, blurrier, and even have colour offsets, as well as different masking types! My only complaint with this game is the price! it would have been nice to cap it at under £10 but since its a licensed game, I do kinda get why the price is what it is. Overall a fun classic game if you're a retro gamer like myself! definitely give it a shot! NOTE for the developer: The achievement for "Beat Jaws at Power Level 3" is bugged as it will also unlock if you beat JAWS at power level 9, rendering the achievement kind of pointless.

Jeremy Parish was right, Jaws DID need more time in the oven to show its potential as a fun action RPG type of game

Cool update to an old NES game. Movie based games were always a favorite of mine and this one is better than most.

They took Jaws and made it play like Zelda 2. It's honestly rather commendable considering how bare bones the original game was.

I played this alot as a kid. I just started playing this today. The old instincts took over on my playthrough. A successful duel without losing a life! Now I am on the Enhanced playthrough. Robbing sea creatures of their money and self improvement! Hey that first shark wasn't so bad! Then the second one shows up and suddenly the sea creatures are getting sick of your shennagins. So yeah, buy this game.
