Isopod: A Webbed Spin-off

Took my time to 100% this before giving this review. I liked it! It's very cute and I think the floaty movement is fun, tho I do wish we could have had a constant speed boost by holding the dash button, maybe not AS fast but something to make movement go faster and better. The exploration was cool and the jokes I did laugh a few times. Only negatives I have are that the game is not exactly polished, multiple missing models or textures to see, as well as some bugs (heh) during gameplay, although quite rarely. The last fight could've needed some work. Definitely the most frustrating part of the game. Overall I give this game a solid 7/10. It's a very small game and just playing it through it plenty enough, tho I recommend getting it on sale, as I think 20 bucks are a little bit too steep for how short it was. Kinda wish we had some endgame challenges or a hard mode of some kind for replayability yknow

Isopod is one of the best indie 3D platformers I've played. I came for the cute bugs and fun physics, but also enjoyed the simple anti-capitalist story. I bought this as part of a charity bundle and I'm so glad I did. There's a perfect amount of collectibles and play time. It was fun and still had some challenging parts without feeling like a drag to play.

Its... Alright? In the very specific genre of "Funny critters with physics movement abilities" this one has all the good bits in the places I wasnt expecting: Set Pieces and cinematic sequences. Theyre like, really good for what it is. What I wasnt expecting was that I would have to take a break multiple times from the game because the movement started to frustrate me. Theres a lot of little points of design issues that really stood out compared to how slick feeling their previous game "Webbed". One of those little things is the time before resetting when you fall into say, a pit of spikes. Isopod, as a result of it being much larger and having way less air control than webbed means if you miss a jump you are stuck in a pit taking individual damage until you reset to the last checkpoint. Funny thing is theres a fish that tries to eat you when you fall into the river- and without their SWIFT CONSUMPTION of your isopod (Winston) you will be stuck in the water for several seconds longer than the time it takes for you to miss that jump in the first place. I found myself thanking Dave for their services to put me back to the last checkpoint Its a really good case study for learning and I want to do a write up about it as a lot of little bits of it makes what should feel like a slam dunk in feel good design with a subsonic isopod rolling through dirt tunnels to a very tedious part of the game. With the story... I get that its more explicitly communist bugs and I dont think theres enough hilariously explicitly communist bugs but what made me fall in love with Webbed was the Absurdity of having Ant Mech Production Line- its still somewhat there but I feel theres just a bit toooo much telling and not enough showing yknow? I still think this setting has a lot of potential as bug communism but I didnt have as much fun this time around. Still a fun game regardless. If you're looking for this specific kind of game its still recommended but I cant help but think it missed some of the magic that Webbed managed to pull off.

so cute!! cried real tears when i first got it, amazing graphics and super engaging gameplay, entertaining storyline with a good message and simple (NOT bland) in a way that doesnt overwhelm me like some other games do, definitely a game you can take your time with. the creature animations are also very accurate to how they would actually move! thank you for not kawaii-fying our crustacean, insect and arachnid friends and showing off their true crawly beauty in all its gloriousness!!

A super lovely game, with a surprisingly deep and resonant storyline! I found myself struggling with the odd glitch, and also a few times where I wasn't entirely sure what I was supposed to be doing, but I still was able to complete the story! Some of the collectibles are pretty hard to get, I might have to go back through at some point and try get them. But overall, as an isopod lover who hates capitalism, it's such a wonderful gem of a game!
