About
From one of the artists behind "Deponia", "Leisure Suit Larry" and a bunch of game you never heard of, comes a new experience:
Is THIS a game?
Well, it has everything you'd expect from a video game:
loads of buttons
pixels (more than 1000!!!)
even animation!
achievements (those are important, right?)
a mouse-cursor to point and even click sometimes!
state of the art 8 bit sound-design!
An axolotl
More than 50 mini-”games”
pop culture references to ALL your (aka my) favorite game franchises
But… is this enough? What even is a game? Does this count? How much interactivity do you need? Are games art? What am I and if yes… how many? Are there maybe TOO many axolotls in this game?
Come in and find out for only 4 bucks! Only for a limited time (<= lie)! Support a more or less struggling gameartist, working in the industry for 10+ years (and still not good enough for the artstation front page). Aaaanyway, thank you for your time and have fun “playing” this “game”...

is THIS a game? is a series of largely unrelated interactions that come together to form a game, maybe. Created by illustrator Johannes Lott, it poses the question of what constitutes a game. The loosely defined and highly casual gameplay consists of navigating through a number of “mini games” that can more accurately be described as interactions. For the most part, they consist of simply clicking, and the more taxing tasks require the player to press a few keyboard keys; some screens just have humorous tool tips. The biggest drawback of the gameplay is that the various “mini-games” seem to shuffle, meaning that repetition is frequent even when there is content that the player has not yet seen. Given that the strongest feature of the content is its comedy value, and the general lack of substance and sense of achievement, the repetition offers no replay value and gets dull very quickly. It may offer 30-40 minutes of playtime for those who want to see everything, but playtime is probably a more accurate term than gameplay as it feel a bit more like a toy than a game. Unfortunately, the toy feels insubstantial, lacking anything that would allow a player to feel invested. It is a decent way to amuse oneself for 10-15 minutes, but the incessant repetition is detrimental to the experience as a whole and treats the player’s time with a flippant disregard, placing no value on the investment they are making. Unfortunately, is THIS a game feels like it was created with either little care, or little experience, and the price tag, although far from hefty, is not really justified by what is being offered. With an interesting concept and the appeal of quirky and casual mechanics, this could have been great; however, the execution is heavily flawed and as such I cannot recommend this game. Ist das Kunst? Ist das ein Spiel? Auf jeden Fall ist es Toll! Wer mal was anderes machen möchte, rein da!
Curiosity pulled me into "is THIS a game?" – a title that perfectly sets the stage. What awaits is a rapid-fire collection of micro-games, dripping with meta-humor and clever nods to gaming culture. It's less about deep mechanics, more about the smirk of recognition when you spot the reference. [+] Charm Offensive: The visual style is the undeniable star. It's quirky, distinct, and instantly memorable. Everything looks genuinely cute and cohesive in its own weird way. Sound design complements the vibe nicely. [+] Meta-Mindset: The humor lands best if you're steeped in gaming. It's not just random absurdity, it's winking meta-irony poking familiar tropes. Spotting the inspirations is the core fun. [-] Fleeting Fun: The main drawback is the lack of structure and depth. Micro-games feel randomly tossed together, and the whole experience blazes by in about 20 minutes to see everything. Quantity feels light for the price tag. > "Wanted more meat on these charming bones... feels like premium pricing for a free-game concept." | Verdict: A curious, visually delightful bite for gamers craving a quick, self-aware chuckle. Love if: You adore unique art & get a kick from gaming in-jokes. Skip if: You seek substantial gameplay or value-per-hour. |
Is this really a game? I don't know. But what I do know is, that I smirked and chuckled and laughed quite often. If you need to be take your mind off serious things for a minute, play this. (Would have loved more warrior ware like mini games, though)
Thanks, I hate it.
It's a piece of art. Danke Herr Schott
It's a loop of clicking your mouse game. Anyone that's ever played a video game will be able to relate. I'd actually prefer someone like Asmongold review this in video form. Now, that would be EPIC! Follow: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/indieretrogamers
Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae, nostra Galli appellantur. (It's good and charming and funny and quotes one of my favourite Latin lessons - nice.)
I have mixed feelings on this game.... but generally I think it is fun. Is This A Game? is just a series or random little micro games. Mostly are just one click things. Click a button, spam a button, occasionally there's an actually little game you play like platforming or something. So... is it a game? I'd say no. I'd say it's more of an experience and it's a very funny one. The humor is a bit dry sometimes, but overall I've gotten a decent giggle from it. Every micro game gave me a chuckle and most of them in multiple ways as there's different ways you can do things for some. And some of them have a decent message behind them besides the humor. Like the grim reaper coming for you on the toilet if you don't stop doom scrolling. There's a "loading screen" that says some things that are funny and some that are just statements that I can't help but agree with like "games are political". There's also some that are commentary or jokes directed at specific kinds of games. Like the one where you are buying horse armor or making jokes about "Save the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ farmer or the innocent baby". Or the one that is the character selection screen and it has the white male character as "default". It's all very tongue in cheek. Some of it is very dry, but clever. The design is also a really fun style and the sound design is good. I found myself bobbing along to the song even as it got repetitive. The achievements are also fun. None of them competely give away how to get them. So getting them is kinda a fun little puzzle for you to figure out. I do have some criticism though. Primarily that the randomizer doesn't seem to be very good. There are some micro games I have only seen once.... and some I've seen like 10+ times. Heck, at one point in the span of 6 micro games, 3 of them were the same one. Just had the same one every other time 3 times in a row. There's also some in the trailer that in 30 minutes I've never seen once. This also made me question if I'd be upset spending $4 on the game had I not received it free for review... and I think I'm leaning towards I would be. Just because with it getting very repetitive at points made it feel like I saw the whole game in about.... 15 minutes? Even though I know I haven't. Something I don't think was the intent of the developer. If they do an update at some point I'd really like to see the randomization tweeked a bit. I'd like to see more of what it has to offer. I'd also appreciate an actual menu mostly so that I can turn the game down without having to go into my sound settings and turn down the game that way. Overall I think it's a fun little game. It's very funny and gave me a giggle. I hope the dev makes a few tweeks to it to make it a bit of a better experience. But overall I'd say it was fun. In it's current state I'm on the fence on saying if it's worth $4 for the humor. I think it kinda comes down to what $4 is worth to you, is it a big deal? Or can you easily afford to spend $4 to support a small developer with a goofy bit of satire? If all else fails, wait for a sale. I do know I can see myself picking this up now and again for a quick giggle and to continue to hunt down the achievements.
