Only just exploring the world, but it does some really interesting things with the "dead" world. Enjoying it so far! Looking forward to playing some more.
Into the Underdusk is a unique, story driven Metroidvania with solid level design. Im enjoying how the mystery of the narrative is unfolding as you find things in the world.
Into the Underdusk is a solid metroidvania with a nice story supported by a great atmosphere (kudos to the soundtrack that does a wonderful job creating it) and solid controls. The platforming phases are not really that precise and brutal but there are some difficult situations that can throw off the least experienced players (more on that later). I really loved the NES vibe this game gave me, it took me back to that wonderful period where games were sometimes unfair but enjoyable. If that sentence feels weird, maybe Into the Underdusk is not for you. Because yes, the game does suffer from a few flaws or bizarre choices that sometimes create unfair situations and that can frustrate some of the most impatient or inexperienced players out there. But you also have to realize that this game has been developped by a single person that kept his day job and in only 6 months. If you ask me, that's quite the impressive feat. The first weird choice is that you start by walking and the running feature is an item you have to find. The path to it is straight forward since that's the only way you can go but it can be frustrating to be so slow at the beginning of the game. Once you get said boots, the speed is very acceptable and didn't feel slow at all, I played ton of platformers slower than this. Just don't forget to enable autorun in the menu (I really don't understand why that option isn't enabled by default and why walking is even an option, it's never useful). The second weird choice, and by far the biggest flaw of this game, is that the behavior of the enemies is COMPLETELY random. They have a few fixed attacks but the timer between them is complete rng. If you're not lucky at all, the mobs can go berserk and attack you non stop. If you're lucky, they won't even move at all during the whole time you're in the room. Since most of them throw stuff at you (and then again, the directions in which they throw it is random), it can create situations where you just have to go for it and pray the RNG doesn't kill you. Most of the time, you can mitigate this by treading carefully and reacting correctly but there are a few rooms that just throws you into rng-land and you can't really do anything about it. If you don't care about the iron main achievement (clear the game sub X deaths), it's not really a big deal on the long run, it just generates a bit of frustration but it's still manageable since you won't cross more than 4 or 5 rooms between each save points. The last point I want to talk about is the map and exploration: I totally understand the way the dev went for but you have to be aware that sometimes you'll wander around A LOT looking for your next goal. You know what you want to get since the NPC tell you what they want but how to find it is another story. I absolutely loved that feeling of being lost that's part of the great atmosphere that the game tries to create (successfully if you ask me) but then again, I understand that some people don't like it (but why play a Metroidvania if you don't like being lost?). The map can be very confusing at time tho, because there are a lot of doors in this game and there's no indication which door goes where. There are also a few paths that don't really make sense map-wise because you'll go into a screen transition that'll take you at the opposite of the map for no obvious reason. It's a deliberate choice from the dev to create a more mysterious atmosphere and make you feel even more lost but sometimes it can be off-putting. Despite all of that, after a while you'll get a good feeling of the map and be able to go wherever you want without getting lost anymore. Overall, I think Into the Underdusk is a good game. It could have been great but the flaws I listed are dragging it down a bit. They could have been avoided but for someone's first game, I really think it's impressive and that this dev has a lot of potential. I will definitely follow his next project with interest. If you can play this game with an open mind, accept these mistakes and of course, if you like the Metroidvania genre, I'm sure you'll have a great time.
Enjoyed it much more than I expected I would. Exploration based metroidvania with no combat (you can only avoid enemies and their attacks) that managed to hold my attention throughout the entire ~10h it took me to beat it. As fun as it was there were a few issues constantly hampering my enjoyment: - Way too RNG based. Enemies move in random patterns, shoot projectiles in random directions and at random intervals. In rooms full of them, finally managing to beat them comes down to mostly luck and feels like bashing your head against the wall, which is really weird for an otherwise pin-point precision platformer. - Very annoying and tedious to sit through death screen. You're meant to die in this game. A lot. To keep retrying. And instead of instantly teleporting you back to the checkpoints, as most games like these do, you have to sit through a short cutscene, which is also pretty loud. Wasn't a fan. - Can be hard to figure out where to go sometimes. You do get occasional vague tips, but even with them I'd get lost every once in a while, or complete an area, at the end of which was an object I couldn't interact with yet, forcing me to re-do it later. Didn't mind it that much but I suppose some could. Other than that really enjoyed my time with the game, huge recommend from me for 2d platformer fans.
Developers, what the ♥♥♥♥ is wrong with you making this broken piece of ♥♥♥♥ "game"?? It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broken and unbeatable. The wall jump feature is broken(i.e. only works when it wants to), and the mask chase end part of the "game" is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!! You next to never have enough time to avoid both it and the surrounding enemies long enough, to make it to the next respawn point. I promise to never recommend this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ piece of ♥♥♥♥ to any of my friends, unless you improve the wall jump mechanic and slow the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ speed down of the mask chasing you. We need room to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ breathe at the final part of the game. I seriously hope you fix this piece of ♥♥♥♥!!
I don't like it. Some of the platforming is hard just because you're forced a scroll transition mid-jump (there's not active camera system, you just run or jump off the edge of the screen and the next screen scrolls into place), the sprint button is not changing the guys speed, and so many precision jumps end up falling down 3 minutes of gameplay, that's frustrating. And that's just from playing 10 minutes.
This is a challenging game and worth my money. I am only 2.5 hours into the game and can't wait to beat it! i don't like the spiky guys that spit stuff out of their head. i will conquer this game. teehee
Nunca me imagine que un juego me enganchara como hace años, sin duda una experiencia muy agradable, un juego que recomiendo al 1000x1000
A charming platform adventure game, lovely art and retro style platform action. Highly recommenced
