About
The wilderness is waiting. The map is your only guide.
Infinite Orienteering: The Hiker's Path is a realistic navigation simulator that captures the essence of the sport. Dropped into a procedurally generated forest with nothing but a compass and a topographic map, your goal is simple: find the fastest route between control points.
Every ridge, every marsh, and every thicket is a choice. Do you climb over the hill to save distance, or is it faster to run around it? Do you bushwhack through the dense green forest, or take the longer route through the open pine woods?
Powered by procedural generation, no two races are ever the same. The game creates unique terrain, vegetation, and water features on the fly, ensuring that you can never memorize the map. Every race is a fresh test of your navigation skills.
Realistic Navigation: Use your compass to take bearings and your map-reading skills to interpret the terrain, transferable to the real-life skill of navigating with map and compass only.
Infinite Maps: Generate billions of unique, open-world environments and courses. Share map seeds with the community if you find a map you like.
Standard Mapping: Navigate using authentic topographic maps featuring accurate contours (5m intervals), vegetation density layers, and magnetic north lines, just like a real orienteering event. In the long run we're looking to include most map elements of the International Orienteering Federation's Mapping standard and follow their guidlines closely.
Race Your Way: Choose from Sprint, Middle, or Long distance courses, or customize the difficulty to match your skill level. Beat the clock, or go for a nice stroll, your choice.
Night Mode: For a challenge, run at night! With only a forehead flashlight to illuminate your way.
Replay Analysis: Watch your route after every race. Analyze where you lost time, where you nailed a shortcut, and how you can improve for the next run.
3D Replay: Optionally view the map replay in 3D for better terrain readability.
Handbook: Become a master orienteer by studying the handbook to improve your technique.
Whether you are a veteran orienteer looking to train your map memory in the off-season, or a hiker who loves the peace of the virtual outdoors, Infinite Orienteering offers a pure, uncompromised simulation of movement through nature.
Lace up your boots. The clock is ticking.

This game does a decent job of recreating the experience of orienteering. The map and compass are implemented in a pretty seamless way. The replay is very nice, love seeing that red dot zoom and reviewing how I did. The game is quite rough around the edges, though. Objects spawn with odd clipping through the terrain. Controls can sometimes appear in the middle of very thick vegetation that you cannot see through forcing you to crawl through at very slow speed just hoping you bump into it (god why). Strafing at a diagonal, holding W and A or D, Causes you to move at a much faster rate than normal. I'd love to see this game continue development, I can really see the potential to refine the game and create a more immersive experience. I do find it cute that there are first aid posts around and marked on the map. Maybe we could add a health bar and wolves to fight so we could actually use them to heal.
A great start for this game with a lot of potential for growth. Can't wait to see it evolve. Possible improvements: Some controls are randomly generating in locations that one would not typically use for orienteering such as in the middle of open white forest. Would be better to tie locations to point or line features, or more obvious terrain features (reentrents, saddles, spurs) as the open forest controls seem a little bingoish. Would love to see control descriptions generated. Would love to see flag locations generate on the opposite side of features away from the line of travel to the control - on the other side of boulders for example. It's a little less challenging when you can see the flag 50 metres out in front of a building or boulder. Perhaps implementing a difficultly level that could control these parameters? So, just a few early observations so far, but enjoying the game and looking forward to playing it a lot more.
Played a couple of maps. Game has potential, but there is a learning curve if you are not used to real-life orienteering. Great for people new to orienteering that wants to learn how to navigate from map-reading! User interface can be improved. Easy to get lost, mostly because of the difficulty to get a spatial awareness of distances. If you are used to first person shooter games, you will feel lost without the navigation catered. I pressed SPACE too many times, expecting to jump, only to trigger the map.
The game was fun and challenging, but it took some time to understand how it worked. I also got dizzy after running around in that world when it was so "shaky". Maybe you can make it easier for beginners who aren't used to these kinds of games? I would also wish for the camera to be more stable when running around, so I could actually play it for a longer time without needing to take breaks in between.
Good start, hope that this eventually evolves to something even great! I like the idea very much because other similar games have just one or few maps and it gets boring. Few suggestions: 1. Would really enjoy if the map could be instantly replayed after finishing, so a friend group could compete right away in the same track. 2. The thick green could be with way taller grass or small trees to represent the very slow speed the game gives. 3. Standard moving speed could be a hair faster. 4. Would be cool in the future to see higher elevation elements and rocky cliffs. 5. Night orienteering light ray should bleed a little more to the surroundings not just the circle in the middle.
I would love to see development on this continue. Even now its pretty good for learning how to read maps and keep track of your own location. Things I would like to see in the game, from higher priority to lower:

Improve basic game options - like video settings, audio, control bindings, language, etc.
Saving and sharing replays - to compare with other people (the trailer shows something that looks like this but I could not see anything in-game)
Terrain generation customisation - For instance, I can see lakes are possible from the store screenshots but after generating ~10 maps I had yet to see one. It would also be cool to generate a really mountainous map.
Map generation customisation - like adjusting contour interval, scale, maybe even the vegetation classification.
Add assets - for a game like this more assets will pretty much always be better. More varieties of trees, more rocks, bushes, grass, etc. If it can be done well randomly generating assets is also an option.
Dev mode movement - in dev mode after you release a movement key you will keep moving for a bit.
Pretty cool procedurally generated world to run through, however there is still room for polish, for example the varied movespeeds depending on the surface type have too drastic differences, and the headbobbing is a bit excessive.
The game is fun, and represents oreienteering realy good. At the and of the run you are displayed a map and animated path where you were wandering, or didn't :) The map control and overview ingame is perfect, you have everything you need to orient your self. Random maps are great, the generation system still needs to be improved, but for this kind of game it is a perfect solution for unlimited play. Maps should be more challenging, now almost everything is passable, you just adjust your course and go straight to the next check point. There should be more impassable terraing, but not just in the form of randomly placed fances and walls, it should be more natural, like extreamly dense vegetation or very steep terrain, clifs, rivers. The tall grass is slowing you down which is great, it makes you look for a better path, but would prefere more dense vegetation graphics for that, like bushes for example, that should be more realistic. Considering maps are randomly generated orienterring trail could always be placed at the center, there is no need the trail to be near the edge of the map, you potentionaly should never see the end of the map, unless really lost. There is room for some graphics improvements. Fog effect is not great, sky is still blue and clearly visible. I found a house spawned leaning. All in all a game with good potential, considering it is early access now.
Movement is far too slow. The compass doesn’t allow you to take a bearing using the compass housing. Not recommended... :(
Excellent game, the concept is challenging yet does not make your first few runs literal hell, and there is definitely replay value even after playing for a while !
