Infected Dawn is a poorly constructed, cheap rip-off of Scriptwelder's Don't Escape 2. Even the music is copied from it. Zero acknowledgement is given as far as I am aware. As it stands, this game is 1.0 only in name. Within the first 3 minutes of game play, I had already found a way to get out of bounds and fall off the map. In one location, there is just a straight up invisible hole in the map that you can fall through. It's also possible to soft-lock the only non-death ending the game has due to the poor inventory UI. As it stands, your inventory has 8 slots. If you pick up more than 8 items, the extra items disappear and you cannot interact with them. There is no way to drop items, so if you pick up the screwdriver with a full inventory, you simply
can't reattach the door to your hideout
Another major bug has to do with interacting with objects. When you do so, the game will provide text to the player and give them a hint as to what to do with it. However, as soon as you
remove the car battery from the bus
all of these tips stop appearing. Starting a new game is the only way to fix it. The gameplay itself is very lackluster. The interesting elements are all stolen from DE2, and what's left is a shallow, empty game with large areas filled with nothing but pre-made assets. Most offensively, the game is not even finished. 4 out of the 8 achievements in the game are 0.0% achieved a full 5 days after the game's release as they are tied to achieving the game's "good ending". In the game's current state, that ending appears to be not possible Don't buy this game. Instead, check out the masterpiece it tried to copy. EDIT: A few hours after my review, an update was released that fixed most of the bugs I referenced above, including the inventory soft-lock, missing tool-tip text, and made the "good" ending possible. Unfortunately, 3 out of the 8 achievements still appear to be impossible to achieve despite beating the game on each difficulty. Despite these fixes, I still cannot recommend the game due to the low quality of the game itself and the unaccredited inspiration from scriptwelder. Infected Dawn is simply not a full release. The game, at a fundamental level, is unfinished. It would be far more honest to advertise this as an alpha. Edit 2: Game has been updated a fair bit since my initial review. The final product is still rough around the edges, and I wouldn't exactly call it complete. But it's worth the couple of bucks if you are curious.
Infected Dawn is a somewhat low-key asset flip. The developer acknowledges that they took assets from other people to make the game, but only loosely credited those asset creators who inadvertently did more work on this "game" than the actual "developer". While it's possible the assets were used with permission, and thus this is not necessarily copyright infringement or plagiarism, it's still creatively bankrupt. There's also the old axiom... those who can't create game assets properly usually aren't particularly capable of any of the other parts of game development either, which is certainly true for this game. Regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself. This asset flip/Unity kitbash has you experiencing the usual post apocalyptic infection scenario and you just clunk around various properties (teleporting around because moving between scenes is difficult for some asset flippers to program), collect stuff like batteries and bolt cutters until you adventure game your way to surviving the night... that's kinda all there is to it, it's an underwhelming puzzle game at best, but taking that all important step back and seeing this is just an asset flip kitbash are the nails in the coffin of an already bad experience. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. The mismatched game assets are fairly mediocre/low quality, it's a wonder why they couldn't be bothered "borrowing" higher quality assets for this asset flip. This is a lot like going on a shoplifting spree but only stealing the cut price store brand goods. Regardless, the poor quality assets alone should be enough to deter gamers from bothering with this. These technical shortcomings push this game below minimum standards for any competently developed modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 130 million gamers on Steam and well over 140,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 140,000+ games on Steam? Infected Dawn is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Good game, worth it if you have an hour to kill and 3 dollars.
Decent for what it is I guess, but would I spend $3 to play it again? Nah. It's fun for one play through, then boring once you realize that every item is in a set location. After my first play through, I only played it again to try and 100% it, however. The final achievement "Zap!" is not achievable anymore. I've seen that some people have gotten that ending in the past, but it must've been broken with an update. I know exactly what to do, but when I do said thing, it gives me ending 4 instead of 5, a bug that others have experienced too.
Incredible atmosphere of apocalypse, the concept is good and unique for this type of games
P.S. I died to an electric fence, be careful with that thing if you don't want to end your adventure like I did
The 5th ending is a myth in the new 1.0.6 update version. So, I had to download the previous version to get that ending. Overall, The game is still good despite its minimalism. Here is how I get that ending: https://youtu.be/qWaT9RNBJpQ
Decent little game, very easy to beat. A couple achievements seems to be bugged, but it's only been released not too long ago. A good way to keep yourself busy for a bit.
not for me
