DO NOT BUY / PLAY! Publisher / Developer has trademarked the phrase "Hidden Cats" and is now forcing all other Publishers / Developers to change the name of their games, if their game is about, well, finding hidden cats. Although many other games came way before any game Publisher/Dev Nukearts ever created. This is done just to get rid of any competition who, by the way, create way better games than Nukearts will ever be capable to.

👑 Powered by HoI 4 Deu Curators group in German / English 👑⠀⠀⠀

Follow Main group
Follow Second group
and discover more reviews from me

Game play is kind of fun for an hour, but there is no sense of progression other than trying to improve your own score. This is a polished and good looking little puzzler and even the the price is okay, but I would have preferred actual levels instead of perpetually replaying the same field.
Hextones is a console (Switch) ported block placement game where you're given a hex grid and a bunch of hexagons that you need to carefully place, trying to match colours and symbols. Yeah, it's extremely shallow. Apparently if you match enough, you can travel through space. I certainly wanted to get off the planet after playing this rubbish. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it. Because this is designed for consoles, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the inferior console gaming appliances that the game was designed for. These are unfortunate compromises and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was a second thought for the console-centric developers. The game is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for consoles forces upon a game. Once more, console peasants have made gaming worse for everyone. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but I wasn't able to find it on the app stores. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes Hextones might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players, and the worst part is these weren't genuine players, these were the Russian fake review accounts that the developer paid to make the fake reviews. Since the fake reviews are all done, now the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Warning: Review Manipulation!
This game features a number of fake positive reviews from accounts known to be in the business of review manipulation/paid reviews. They're all written in very similar style, appear at almost exactly the same time, very shortly after the game launched on Steam, all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and the accounts are used consistently to write fake reviews for asset flips and other cash grabs/scams. The "Positive" review score on this game should be disregarded due to this blatant, unethical review manipulation. This is done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product. Hextones is relatively cheap at $1 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend. Because this is the kind of game you can just play for free on mobile phones, it's impossible to recommend anyone should pay money for the same experience on Steam.
Profile Features Limited!
Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game. Edit: It should be noted the developer is highly toxic and unethical, stole the trademark from a game created a year prior and filed a trademark claim on it and is now trying to attack other developers on Steam for using the trademark he stole. This is legally indefensible because there's prior art of the stolen trademark being used by the original creator... but gamers should know when a developer acts in illegal and deliberately malicious ways.
Mentally stimulating yet relaxing game. It's good! I was looking for a replacement for Ishido which I can no longer find for PC. Hextones retains the stone placing challenge that I love in Ishido but expands it. Each stone in Hextones has six instead of four sides. Learning new strategies after years of playing Ishido with only four sided stones is surprisingly fun. Hextones also has incremental challenges where you must get 6 sided, 5 sided, 4 sided, 3 sided and 2 sided correct placements to pass to the next tier. This is more difficult than just accumulating points. The music is hypnotically good. Well worth the price.
https://youtu.be/nGXbVVMhDeA Mechanically functional the scope of play is limited and unlikely to stand up for simply high score chasing due to a lack of progression and variance in play over random tile order.
The developer decided to be a copyright troll. They somehow got a retroactive trademark registered, bullying other developers into changing names of their games. As this hits indie developers, most won't have the money to fight this. Those who don't get the message in time face to be delisted. So I want to thank Nukearts, the devloper of this game, to make it easier to safe money and not support them in the future. I don't support companies and people making the world an even worse place as it already is.
Playtime isn't accurately counting, i have ~9 hrs played. They released what amounts to a patch half a year later for twice the money. it's worth the price of a candy bar, i guess, but that's some hinky business practices i can't agree with. in addition, not a big deal in this day and age, but the game is nearly a gig, why? do we really need 4k resolution graphics for a tile game. i do not get it.
This is a beautiful games. Great theme and general game play. Relaxing music and vibe. One can enjoy it super casually or work your way up the leader board. Worth every penny and beyond.
