A genius book followed by an unbelievably intuitive game.
Although basically unplayable without a walkthrough -- I think that speaks to the message and purpose of adding towards the plot and progression. The game is hard, frustrating, and infuriatingly nonsensical at most parts. Requiring arbitrary sequences to be completed chronologically to allow progression, maybe even to the best possible scenario. That is the point though. AM specifically designed these simulations to toy with the five humans. It is SUPPOSED to be downright impossible. Might not be great for the sake of gameplay and mechanics, but amazingly tailored to storytelling. And to that I have to say I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream takes the cake in terms of storytelling. Exploring what it means to face your fears, to overcome mental barriers, and to do what is right even under the most dire and excruciating circumstances. Very simple and clichéd lessons expanded into nuanced characters that make YOU FEEL the weight of their world. Beautifully tying into the dangers of artificial intelligence -- a dystopian projection of humanity's future if things should continue down the road humans are taking. This game is a terrifyingly well done adaption of the original book released in 1967. The story very much amplified and greatly supported by the absolutely stunning pixel art and color schemes, the mind blowing voice acting and lines, and the stunning soundtrack. A serious round of applause for everyone that worked on this game. To me this isn’t just an old adaption of a book. It’s a serious reflection of our modern day problems and the looming future. Though the controls are wonky, the code is buggy, and the game progression is head-slammingly maddening, I don’t regret a single one of the 9.5 hours I’ve put into this so far. All of it has been worth my time, money, effort, sleepless nights, and then some.
In other words this game is a piece of art. Play it. You won’t regret this purchase.
AM scares me
I think, therefore I AM. A distopia absoluta.
I Have No Dih, And I Must Cream
It was.... phenominal Harlan Ellison was the goat
This game is amezing! As someone who read the book and listened to the audio radio version of it. I LOVED IT! i still need to play as Ellen, and Benny. but i loved to play as Ted and Gorrister! i recommend this for people who love the clear 1970 style of click and choose, and of course for the people who loved the book. But i dont recomend this to players that are used to the more modern games, because this can get pretty confusing for people who are not used to games like this.
One of my favorite games, hands down. The puzzles are genuinely clever, and the story is dark, unsettling, and unforgettable. Nothing feels padded or wasted. A tight, memorable game I'd recommend to anyone who wants something that actually says something.
