Melancholy and an uncanny kind of familiar. Somewhere between the videogame version of a short story, and a poem. Also a bit like overhearring a phonecall from a forthright stranger. Low-fi music and low poly pixelly art makes for a some sort of of alternate-retro - like what if old games had the music from an intimate basement show and what if you stepped into a 3D SNES game. Strongly recommend checking this one out, it's like sea water: It washes over you, but then it kind of clings and sticks around.
The hallway leading to my apartment is a straight shot of leopard print carpet. Depending how tired I am–and the kind of tired I am–that stretch of carpet can feel like a journey of a decimating scale, each step getting smaller and smaller; each moment passing longer and longer. My eyes can play tricks on me while focusing on my steps. But my mind, more so. How did I end up here? What choices have I made that actually granted me agency in my life? What patterns am I rerunning from my family's history? The pattern moves. Sometimes I feel like there's something pulling away at the edges of my perception. When I'm *really* tired, there's even a bit of dread, a feeling that has been more present since the pandemic hit. And then I'm at my door. And my partner and dog are just on the other side. And maybe I'm not remembering how I felt just moments before so well. Or maybe it hit's me full force before I cross the threshold. This game, which is a wonderfully complete moment in time, captures a lot of the rumination and abstraction within my sense of self during my own travel through reflection. I think hexcavator captured this well, even the parts that are more comforting than confronting, because I found myself leaving the game up on my screen for a couple of hours in the background while I did some other work. This is a wonderful meditation, realized through an aesthetic that is both nostalgic and _impossible_. Well worth your time.
A surprisingly sweet experience about searching for signals in the rubble and walking a stretch of memory you thought you'd traversed before; weaving artifacts together, electricity crackling, to create new meaning. Visually arresting, mysterious and rich. Well worth your time and dollars.
A beautiful little game, full of atmosphere and great music. Highly recommend picking it up and following it's protagonist down the short stretch of road contained within.
This game offers a very unique and transporting experience. I really enjoyed the retro aesthetic and the sound design. The play style, pacing and duration is just right for a brief immersion into another perspective. It lives up to the description - weirds you out but offers a bit of respite. Inspiring!
A walking simulator that feels more like a way of conveying an emotion or state of mind in an artistic way. I'm guessing the sounds, symbols, objects, and everything here have a deeper meaning for the creator than for anyone else, but it's wide enough to make you find yourself in those words, to identify moments in your life that felt similar. At some points the narration reads like a poem, creating very meaningful quotes! I have no idea how I got to this game on Steam, but I'm grateful because I got to know the developer and all their others projects! : )
Video game as visual poetry is a beautiful genre that I'm always happy to take in
Paid $3.99 for this. It was good, but not $3.99 good. If you can find it on sale for $1 then consider picking this up. It is literally nothing but a walking simulator with two achievements. Start the game, and finish the game, which I did in like 17 minutes. The game is supposed to be deep, and I guess it is, but ehh. The story is vague, never naming names, never going in depth about the events of this person's life. You just walk down the road coming up to things like a radio, and a baby's crib. Was looking for something relaxing with some replayability, and this ain't it chief.
It's weird. I like it.
Great experience overall, and a lovely story with a weird and unique delivery!
