Hypnospace Outlaw

hsol is not what you would expect. you're likely not going to buy it on a whim. it's one of those 'recommended by a friend' kinda games. it has so much charm, so much lore, and it truly gives you the early internet feeling of 'oh you discovered this too!?' with anyone else who played. that vibe lives on in hsol. the love letter to music and music discovery of an altnate early internet is so clever. all the tunes are bangers. hotdad as chowder man is a real treat. while i'm sad dreamsettler was cancelled, jay is so talented that i'm sure something new in this universe will release eventually.

There is quite literally nothing else like this game. The 90's internet aesthetic and atmosphere was done so perfectly. Not only is this game just fun to explore, it has a great story to go with it. It's such a shame the sequel got cancelled. I hope there is more in the future to expand on this unique subgenre of games. My only complaint is that there isn't more.

A bit hard to get into at first but, after the initial hurdles of figuring out what to do and how to navigate the OS, it's a HILARIOUS and incredibly fun experience. Highly recommend to anyone who's into unique puzzlers, emergent storytelling, and Y2K nostalgia.

Lowk confusing asf to get into but one of the best games I've ever played.

Genuinely crushed that Jay Tholen called it quits on Dreamsettler, the sequel that could have found a wider audience for this idea in a newer generation. This game is a surprisingly rich and immersive mixed media experience that, without the support of streaming, has become a bit of a hard sell irl because people under a certain age don't really connect with that 90s Geocities vibe the game presents itself in, and people over said age usually skip on experimental indie games like this (or have even abandoned gaming as a whole). Whether this is an echo of your first steps of the internet of yore, or you're not familiar with what it feels to explore the intertwining streams of consciousness of a bunch of randos from all over the place in a corner of your room late at night, give this game a chance. If you end up like me, years will go by and you'll still be reminiscing about this wonderful little world every now and then.
