This game was unfortunately very disappointing. The game looks and feels great to play. There is a nice variety of car handling styles, and unlocking all the colors and customization options gives you reason to experiment with all the vehicles. But the game becomes uninteresting once you realize how “fake” the ai is. To put it simply, this is some of the worst rubber banding I’ve ever seen in a racing game. You will constantly be surrounded by cars no matter how skillfully you seem to escape them. They will artificially speed up to catch up to you and surround you. At first this seemed cool because it created the feeling that I was always just barely winning, but once I realized the trick, it became boring. Rather than play well overall, you are pushed into a repetitive strategy of building up a ton of boost to spam right at the end of a track. Since there’s no way to build up a lead, there’s no reason to aim for generally faster driving. This changes in Expert mode where the other cars will artificially shoot away from you at the very beginning of a race, even if you are use a startup boost. In these cases it’s easy to fall way behind the pack simply because the speed difference between you and the other cars is so stark. In Expert the only way to win is to employ the cheap boosting strategy while having very clean driving to avoid slowing down at all. But then the aggressiveness of the other drivers becomes a problem. You can and will be pitted by the ai over and over again. While you can try to avoid this, there are times when other cars will literally pinball back and fourth across the track. This all makes Expert mode feel far too luck based. The game also suffers from a lot of fragmentation of ideas, likely caused by the mid-development change in direction. There are several other modes that don’t feel very well thought out and the main racing content is lacking in volume and quality. Most of the tracks in this game are pretty boring. The themes get repetitive and only a few key layouts are interesting. It feels like the other components of the game are detracting from the core racing and this makes the game feel incomplete overall.
