Set in a modern low-poly arcade world, players of Race Condition find themselves as a rookie in a highly competitive open-wheel racing league. A rivalry with one suspiciously good opponent complicates things further.

First place AI sped up faster than physically possible every time I got close. I tried cutting past him but he spun me out. Every. Single. Time. What in the ????? 2nd-11th place literally immediately flounder and might as well not even be in the race but 1st place is just blatantly cheating. Even in the 1st race???? WTF??

Race Condition is built as a retro open wheel racer to which it succeeds, However it also contradicts that and its own steam page through the story mode's unbalanced AI (by design) that ensures one racer is constantly ahead of the pack with incredible speed; This coupled with other issues makes the gameplay frustrating despite its uplifting visuals.
Elaboration
The choice to create a story about an AI rival cheating with a modified car works in making the player push and take all the risks they can to get first place & beat the odds, BUT it fails at providing a genuine "fair play" arcade experience as a result. The lack of delivery is not helped by track & pit stop design issues, near uncontrollable vehicle handling on corners and the AI's racing lines forcing them to skip corners entirely without losing speed. While the game has three pre-set handling setups available, they don't offer much when it comes to track conditions or track variation; your selection of pre-set comes down to which set up you can handle whether its high speed or low speed; although low speed will have you barely keeping up with the AI; Not to mention corners are extremely finicky with ineffective brakes that can't manage your momentum on corner entry, usually resulting in a spin, flying into a wall at Mach 10 or losing positions by slamming to a halt to avoid that. Most tracks are functional however there are a few tracks that have poor layouts that only the AI can take full speed or without losing positions; e.g. there's a track with a tight chicane after 350km straight followed by a hairpin turn that you have to sacrifice positions (if you're in the pack) in order to take without issue. The game is based around Formula 1 or Open Wheel racing and yet it's near required and enforced due to the aforementioned AI pathing that you cut corners by driving through sand/gravel traps in order to beat and surpass the AI who themselves match & amplify their speed based on your positioning (rubber banding). On top of the Asphalt being irrelevant on corners, the Pit Lane may as well be a shortcut on certain tracks as it barely limits your speed during refuel and can provide you with a few seconds lead while getting a fuel tank fill up in the process. I should note that there are issues with AI name tags obstructing your view when in close proximity, making close racing or overtakes on straights a hassle when you can't see the corner entry. There's also the case of every car crashing upon race completion that while entertaining to watch after a hard race, feels out of place given the open wheel car format. I completed the world tour experience in three hours with first place podium positions on all tracks. The experience was average and as someone who has no plans for multiplayer or split-screen sessions, three hours is all I’ll get out of the title.
Conclusion
I don't think Race Condition is worth the full $10 or the recent $5 on sale price; HOWEVER I do recommend the title if you can get it cheaper than the on sale price, otherwise play the demo as from what I've heard you won't be missing much if you choose to do so. It's a very fun game. Great arcade physics, cute visuals. The game easily runs at 90 fps on a steam deck.
Look, I understand the negative reviews talking about rubberbanding or "AI cheating", but, while true, I feel they are missing the Point here. Race condition is a game about your Rivalry with Dickmann (the one superior AI), as it is baked into the small story.. and if you look the game from that angle IT REALLY WORKS.. specially when you WANT to get 1st place in a new circuit, you need to SWEAT for it against Dickmann and you do feel your personaly rivalry against the AI guy. If you are looking for realism, yeah look elsewhere, but if you are looking for a (very) fun, retro-style arcade game to kill a few minutes, Race condition is PERFECT, it does evoke the spirit of 90's racing games. if you see it on sale, do pick it up and give it a chance, and again, look at it from the angle of "this is an easy to pick / hard to master game about a rivalry"
Race Condition is a third person low poly totally not Formula-1 (because that needs a license) racing sim that, while it appears to be some kind of mobile app, is actually on Steam. One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. The game features lazy low-polygon "retro" assets, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the 1990s. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks bad as a result of their decisions, a compromise PC gamers shouldn't have to put up with. It's really important to point out that we live in an era where racing games feature photorealistic graphics... so who is asking for a racing game with 1990's graphics and utterly unrealistic driving physics? The controls and game handling are notably very floaty and imprecise. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing or polish done. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 7 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? Race Condition has the ridiculous, laughable price of around $7 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $7 asking price for this game could get you games like "Hellblade: Sensua's Sacrifice", "Left 4 Dead 2" or "This War of Mine". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. If you really like racing sims, just buy one of the F1 licensed games. You get what you pay for, true, but in this case you don't even get that, and the competition is godlike in comparison, even if it costs a lot more.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
Picked this bad boy for under 3 buckaroos, Sure all the complaints about the 1st place AI cheating are Completely Valid, That man is a menace on the track. But i have never had racing game that i actually felt like i earned that First place podium. You really do feel like the Rookie in an already established league, Fighting tooth and nail to Overtake the one and only Dickmann, I have nightmares about him sometimes, that cheating son of a biscuit. Well worth picking up on sale. (Most Time Played Offline on Steam Deck, I Swear I have 10 hours on this game and not .4)
ENG: Even after trying the demo, I had serious doubts about whether to buy it or not, mainly because, as you can read in other reviews, the rubberbanding is atrocious. If we crash, the rivals slow down for us to catch up, and vice versa if we overtake them. However, despite this major flaw, it's also an aesthetically pleasing game that feels good to play and has leaderboards, as well as a time trial mode to compete in them, which I found more enjoyable than the story mode. For all these reasons, I give it a thumbs up, but I strongly suggest trying the demo first.
Race Condition had potential, but the number of issues holding it back from being a good and complete game is just too much. Major issues: - The rules for completing the World Tour (campaign) mode are unclear. At some point, new races just stopped appearing on the map. I’ve placed on the podium in all of them, yet there’s no indication of how to progress or actually complete the mode. - Nametags obstruct the view when you're closely following another car. Minor issues: - The music loops constantly and starts to get annoying really quickly. - The end-of-race pileup doesn’t make sense and feels out of place — the rest of the game doesn’t have any similar goofy elements. - The font shown after a race feels like a placeholder and doesn’t match the rest of the UI. - Russian drivers (names/flags) in the campaign mode. Imagine releasing a game during WWII with n*zi competitors in it? I get that from Sweden, the world’s problems might seem distant and irrelevant — but at least try to read the room. - Cars lack detail. Could we at least get some fake sponsors or decals? - The game view occasionally flickers when selecting UI elements, briefly exposing the desktop. Overall, navigating the UI feels sluggish and somewhat broken. I saw a good take from one of the reviewers that sums up the experience really well — you can’t really feel the difference between Race Condition’s demo and the full game.
