I thought seeing all these hallucinations meant I was crazy, but one of them is a therapist and he says I'm fine.

Storyline
Take on the role of Rui Genzaki, a boy infected with Spiria, a mosquito-borne illness, in Horrific Xanatorium. Hallucinations, delusions, and memory loss result from Spiria. Rui's infection causes him to see strange humanoid forms and "not really" things, making it hard for him to distinguish truth from illusion. Though there is no cure for Spiria, he takes a bus to Kamikawa Sanatorium Hospital with his sister Mone. Rui's intermittent hallucinations make it hard for him to tell reality from fiction. As he arrives at the hospital, he finds himself among other Spiria patients, each battling their own hallucinations and challenges. The gruesome story unfolds in a perfectly slow-paced and interesting way, keeping me thoroughly engaged. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3226699298
Characters
Meet your loving and caring sister Mone. She is behaving weirdly lately. Is she hiding a dark secret or is it just another of your hallucinations? One of Rui's hallucinations, Gelni, takes the form of a floating, talking, skeleton head, inspired by his favorite superhero TV show, Sword Rangers. Gelni constantly tempts Rui towards malevolence, often appearing to make disparaging remarks. Is Gelni a manifestation of Rui's subconscious? Anri, the eccentric hospital director who greets you with a gun to the head, adds to the surreal and quirky atmosphere. While Riza, a beautiful but eccentric girl from Rui's past with an affinity for the occult, reenters his life within the Spiria ward. Riza, struggling with her own hallucinations, believes the world is on the brink of ending. Together, she and Rui engage in nightly occult activities, while reconciling their past connections. Revealing more would spoil the plot(s), but suffice it to say, the story is a rollercoaster of uncertainty and surprise. And all the endings are either twisted, beautiful, and/or cruel, catching me off guard with the twists. In the end, one question is what matters most. Will you choose reality or fantasy? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3227405012
Gameplay
As is seen in a lot of visual novels, your choices have an impact on the story, leading you to different endings. The game offers you two options per choice. Post-ending, the game menu offers an "IF" option in the menu, providing other additional perspectives and optional storylines and depth to the narrative, or perhaps yet another way to make you doubt what is real or not?! It is recommended to start this after you have gotten the GOOD ending. It took me 2.5 hours to complete the game,
though I hesitate to say it never felt truly finished. It leaves me with an eerie feeling, like there's still so much more to uncover, as the developer likely intended.

Graphics & Sound
The game features pretty hand-drawn anime-style graphics that contribute to its unique atmosphere. The artwork is detailed, with a dark and surreal aesthetic that complements the game's psychological themes. Each character is distinctively designed, from Rui's haunting hallucinations to the other patients in the Spiria ward, adding depth to the storytelling. Scenes are rich in atmosphere, from the eerie corridors of the hospital to the occult rituals Rui and Riza partake in. The game's graphics are visually striking, drawing you into the story. The game's soundtrack does a great job of pulling you in. Sounds like creaking doors, growling monsters, and even the noise of a bus ride all help build a creepy vibe. These effects add to the tension and awkward feeling you get throughout the whole game. There are a few typos and grammar mistakes here and there, but they're not too bothersome or difficult to understand. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3227405545
Final Verdict
Horrific Xanatorium is a captivating psychological experience that keeps you guessing throughout. With its intriguing story, interesting characters, plot twists, and surprising endings, it's a game that leaves a lasting impression. While there are some typos, the twisted storyline, fitting sound effects, and stylish anime visuals totally make up for it. This game has left me feeling uneasy (in a good way), like I still don't know the truth. Now I'm sitting here, contemplating this mind-bending experience. If you enjoy mind-bending thrillers like I do, with beautiful and at times gory hand-drawn sprites and environments, Horrific Xanatorium is definitely something for you! Highly recommended!
a good Visual Novel. I recommend it. lots of answer options to choose. sweet girls. the price of this short game is in offer for -40% alright.
Horrific Xanatorium, published by KEMKO, is a short visual novel where you follow Rui Genzaki as he suffers with a virus, Spiria, and its side effects. The virus has caused an epidemic, and while we’re not immediately told a lot about it - we’re made aware that it causes delusions and hallucinations in those suffering from it. But the question is, how do you work out what’s real from fantasy? 𓆩☠𓆪 Upon starting the game, you’re very quickly taught more about Spiria. Rui recently caught it and is on his way to a hospital that is known to treat it, far from his home. Yet even on the journey there, he’s plagued by images of a grotesque creature that vanishes before his eyes. It’s very quickly shrugged off as a hallucination, which is a common occurrence for a Spiria sufferer. I won’t give you details on the truth of anything you may or may not see - I’ll let you figure that out for yourself. This game is full of many uncanny sights to get the reader’s mind working. While not necessarily scary, it certainly plays with your mind while tempting you to doubt just about everything on your screen. Other than Rui, we have four other significant characters. Mone’s the first we meet - Rui’s younger sister who is travelling with him to the hospital. She’ll do what she can to protect Rui and keep him safe. Second, we have my personal favourite - Gelnu, a monster that is part of Rui’s hallucinations. Essentially a floating skull, it exists to torment him. But the monster cannot exist without its Spiria sufferer, so maybe it’ll come in useful? In order of meeting, Anri would be next. Upon meeting the director of Kamikawa Sanitorium Hospital you meet a woman with a gas mask… and a gun? She certainly seems very out of place, but I don’t think you want to poke her and see if she’s real. Finally we have Riza, who plays a significant part in the story. Not only is she Rui’s first love, but they haven’t seen each other in years before reuniting here at such a specific moment in time. Is she a Spiria sufferer, or is it something else? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3232652808 I found the pacing of the story was done rather well. While I don’t know if I was told enough to be able to predict the endings - which is fine - it is very fun realising little hints here and there. The game gives the reader plenty to doubt and think about in the few hours it tells the story. The fun with the endings was realising that not everything was as it seemed. Horrific Xanatorium contains 6 endings if you do not include the after story. Both bad endings and good endings are present - and upon getting an ending you can go back to the final choice to try again. All of the endings are fairly straightforward to get and give you a little more insight into the world and its possibilities. I’d definitely recommend exploring them all before you get to the included after story - which you should not touch before completion by any means. The after story, “If…”, then contains 2 separate endings - giving the reader a… maybe happy ending? 𓆩☠𓆪 When it comes to gameplay, this is your typical visual novel. You have choices that affect your endings which are easy to re-do, as after completion you can go back and choose a day to continue from. Anyone worried about the horror tag can also rest somewhat easily - it’s more psychological than in-your-face horror or jumpscares. As someone who doesn’t typically like horror, I’m happy to give this a thumbs up. Do be aware that it contains a lot of gore and graphic imagery, such as corpses. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3232652773 The biggest and only notable problem with this game is the translation. It’s done well for the most part, but there are the occasional grammatical or spelling errors which I found would occasionally distract me and take me from the experience of the game. If this was polished up, the game would be great. The art - which we were informed was drawn by a Japanese manga artist - was fantastic. It definitely fit the story overall, and it was nice to see a large range of different yet great-looking CGs. Much more than I’d expected from a game of this length. And on that topic, I enjoyed the music and audio for the game. All of the artistic choices felt like they fit the story that was told. 𓆩☠𓆪 Overall, the story of Horrific Xanatorium was an interesting experience. It had some interesting twists and turns, even the endings leaving me with questions. While the game includes a “truth” end, the things that I saw in the others still kept me lost in thought despite seeing everything the game had to offer. Was it really the truth, or was it a last little sneaky trick being pulled on me by the game? Whatever it is, if this psychological, gorey horror suits your tastes I would highly recommend giving it a go. See if you can unveil the mystery within, maybe even save Rui from Spiria.
Horrific Xanatorium Pros:

Good characters drawn not AI art
The character interactions
Not MTL
Riza
Cons:

Leaps of logic
common anime tropes in some parts (if that annoys you)
No romance -blue balling
the MC looks greasy
Some Backgrounds are offensive. Weirdly colored that it lacks detail/ looks to bright.
The menu buttons are weird and tied to the keyboard. But these keyboard buttons don't even make sense. It would be better if we could also access the menu using our mouse.
Review: Horrific Xanatorium is a short visual novel and honestly I have a neutral opinion it is okay but I would not have played it if I wasn't given a review copy. The main story feels rushed and often takes leaps of logic to make sense. Of course this VN is very post-modern, so Its up to you to decide the ending it seems. The game even acknowledges that it its logic does not make sense and you have a choice to point it out and, if that ending was "real" the way the game is written in makes more sense considering how rushed it is but, honestly it feels like a weird way to write and the VN even says that you can decide which ending is real even though they have names like true, good, false ending etc. I enjoyed the "what if" scenario more than the main story if only this was more fleshed out and had an actual romance plot. So yeah its okay but nothing special or interesting but nothing too offensively bad. EDIT: I decided to change my review to not recommended while this game is bland I would not buy if I wasn't offered a review copy so that's why I decided to change it to not recommended. The game isn't bad but just not really worth it.
Art is good and the plot had potential, if it was written well. The writing feels very amateurish, the premise is interesting and it may have worked if the writers had taken their time to make it more detailed, sadly the writing leaves a lot to be desired and takes away from that potential. The plot twist comes way too fast and you don't get any time to empathize or feel bad for the characters.
