Homeseek is a post-apocalyptic survival strategy game set on a resource-strapped Earth at the turn of the next century. In a dried-up wasteland where water has become the new gold, every choice you make becomes life or death.

It's not a survival game, or a city sim, or any real combination, despite its surface appearance. It's really a glorified, linear, puzzle game. There are so many scripted events, and so many little things to juggle, there's basically only one way through, with little to no wiggle room for actually playing it like any kind of sim game. It's like playing a 'choose you own path' adventure where 50% of the paths lead to death with no real way to tell beforehand. And there's so many cascading death spirals that you often will waste time on a hopeless trajectory before you realize it. It's too bad, because the graphics are good, the setting is interesting, the expeditions mechanics add some variety.
I would love to be able to give this game a positive review. Genuinely, I would. There's a lot of interesting potential and the water mechanics are actually pretty interesting. The problem arises with the city builder aspects of this game. I came in expecting a survival city builder. Similar games in the genre being Against the Storm, Frostpunk, and Ixion. But that's not quite what this game is. You'll sit and wait in the early chapters as you are heavily limited by the number of citizens you have. Then you start to get citizens and you're just starting to get started on having a semi working station, and then you have to go off and head to a new area because some problem has arisen with your current area. So you move to the new area, and you're back to square 1 with more people this time. So this time instead of waiting for more workers, you're waiting for your workers to get you more supplies and waiting for your expedition forces to go out to give you something to do. But at least you need to plan out your city, except you don't. The maps are either too spread out to the point you'll not run out of space to build or so narrow there's only one or two possible locations for your important buildings. Then you have to worry about having room to connect your pipes, except you don't really get to determine that, you're just stuck with the automatic generation of the pipes. There's different types of pipes with different levels of leakage, too bad I can't see it without entering the storage UI and I'll just leave it with whichever pipe gives me at least 90% throughput. In summary, it just felt like I wasn't doing much, just sitting and waiting for most of the game. It wasn't engaging my mind to make a civilization, it was putting down the parts to solve the puzzle, and once the puzzle was solved all my work was gone and I had to start on a new puzzle entirely. I made it through act 2 chapter 1 by having single play sessions met with weeks of space in between before I deemed this game good enough to play. Following an unfortunate wipe on my computer of no fault of this game, I decided to give it one more try even though I didn't have the save file. This is after that play session. While I think there were a lot of parts, the restarting at each chapter kills my motivation to keep playing and I'm officially done with it. There's not an update to fix the issues I have, they'd need to make a new game and I won't be waiting on it.
It is a boring game. I can not pass over the fact that everything is copied form other games: Endzone and a little bit of Surviving aftermath. It seems so similar but so poor compared to them. The pace of the game is either to fast or to slow. And the random events are so random that at some point it makes the game unplayable for me.
Cool game. It focuses on story more than the other games like it. All levels are predesigned which i personally prefer to the randomly generated alternative. Decent playtime for it's cost from what i've seen. Can be quite challenging but that's what i came for. Well worth imo.
Homeseek is a colony simulator that frequently puts you in uncomfortable situations. Just as you think everything is going well, it pulls the rug out from under you and forces you to react. You must balance short-term survival with long-term exploration to find new livable areas. Instead of building a self-sustaining civilization, you must move to greener pastures while surviving against the odds. The learning curve is steep as you are expected to make several mistakes. Not everything is explained to you either, forcing you to learn as you go. But if you are willing to stay with the game and adapt, you will find a great challenge that forces you to really think. I would give 6.5/10.
Good interpretation of a survival strategy game. It is not sandboxy at all, it's more focused on story. Desicions are very impact ful in gameplay so this can give the sense that there are a lot of "wrong desicions" which to be honest makes sense in a survival setting. It's very different from the other games like frostpunk, endzone etc and that was fresh and welcome surprise. I think it's an enjoyable game if you like the survival concept and prefer morel linear games than open ended, open world and so on.
I love Frostpunk 1, I love post-apocalyptic games - then I should like this, right? Well, almost Playing the first mission on "Normal" difficulty and following the steps the quests guide me to, I noticed two things immediately: - The UX is pretty poor, with buildings showing information that is both relevant (pipe connectors for example) and apparently entirely irrelevant (building entrances). No guidance of what to look out for here. The whole functionality is a carbon copy of Frostpunk gameplay and agent behavior, a game in which I achieved some of those achievements <1% of players have, yet in this game I misunderstood or entirely missed concepts, which is both surprising and also frustrating - The game's tutorialization is very poor. Everything is contaminated, everyone gets sick. Ok cool. I follow each given goal step by step and as a reward people die. How nice. Maybe tell players to build the research center , which needs 2 days to research the medical center, BEFORE people are on the verge of dying. Maybe introduce them to mechanics step by step instead of pouring a bucket filled with problems over their head right away. Good: Concept is not bad, cool UI, good 3d style too although I didnt notie there are humans walking on the map for the first 2 hours of playing. Very bad: this game seems to be made with the intention of actually just losing people all the time, it is not at all balanced in a way it can be min-maxed in order to have no deaths. there is also no achievement for no-deaths in a mission. I was so baffled by this at first that I restarted mission 1 multiple times, rushing the med center, ignoring objectives, and well, with all sick people in med centers I still had a "1 person died from food contamination". The whole gameplay is also very cookie cutter and placement of buildings seems almost entirely meaningless much unlike in Frostpunk 1 I think in particularly this game is totally lost on the point of Frostpunk 1 were death is portrayed as impactful, tragic and meaningful - you would at times count the number of engineers you have and track them and assign them optimally, etc. because you know you will likely not find new ones and even then it is better to have some more The game just feels like a slop to me because of this, like some designer played Frostpunk 1 a little, not fully grasping it, not playing it for achievements on hard difficulties in survival mode - or anything like that, and then anyways decided to copy the game mechanics they barely understood to the level they could copy it well, and now we got a game that is only a copy in terms of the bits the designer understood. There is also nothing meaningful added to it, and one of the biggest notable elements of that game entirely lost, as mentioned. Even the tech tree feels more generic than in Frostpunk 1. No thank you, uninstalled it and won't return but it was worth checking it for me
I am not an experienced strategy player, but i enjoyed it quite a lot. It combines neat elements from strategy and narrative games in a quite unique way. Definitely recommend it.
