FINAL UPDATE - January 2024 - This game is definitely ABANDONWARE ... again- The developer gave it another small try by claiming to be a new dev and adding a few assets and making a few changes to the game but at least this times he has now made public forum statements last October again that the old coding was not able to be updated. It would take a full rebuild from scratch that would never be worth the time vs money for the possible one sale a month that he was getting. He said it would be coming out of early access and no more updates unless by a small chance in his own occasional play through he found something he must update. He is aware there are still issues that occur or might occur but its over for this game again and i doubt anyone would ever put the effort into it again. I credit his with trying but this is a case where Steam should put an abandoned sign on it if they leave it up for sale. The game is playable but was not and will not be completed as intended. Its might be worth a few bucks if you enjoy this type of game and fully understand its dead and we were all yet again robbed by Steams early access money grab program.... July 2022: There is a new dev, So there has finally been a new update after 3 years of abandoned silence. We will see where it goes and update accordingly. (Jan 24 update to this above July 22 update.) I and many others had never believed this statement of there being a new dev and in spite of some lies from the dev about being a new dav the evidence was pretty strong and now evident to me and most that it has always been the same guy. I guess he hoped the new dev story would bring in more money for the dead game. In spite of adding some new assets and a few changes it didn't. In this case we were nailed twice by the Steam Early Access money grab by the same dead game Abandonware - The developer abandoned this game after we all paid money for it to start another "The Infected" with nearly identical assets. There has been much proof posted of this happening but they deny this and yet will block people from saying so by blocking their commenting in the forum. This developer is one of many who do this and should be the reason that EA rules get changed. Maybe a $2.99 Max price on an EA game with 50% held by steam and then if a developer does not add significant content in a 3 month period the game gets a big warning of it being abandoned as incomplete and those scammed refunded at least that 50% steam held and then if no content after 6 months pull the game from being sold and ban the developer or company from scamming others on any other games.
Normally I log 50 to 100 hours in a game before writing a review, but frankly at 3 hours my opinion is taking shape quite firmly. I think this game has potential but seems to lack focus or purpose. It comes across as derivative of several other games as though the devs cherry picked aspects of other games that they liked and tried to cobble them together into their ideal game. Death has no cost but instead is a handy way to get home with all your loot in an instant. It is another game that seems to lack any understanding of weapons as it takes enough shots to put down a bull elephant to kill anything with a fire arm. Sorry devs but the day that you can stand in front of me and let me shoot you 5 times point blank with a 9mm, or put 11 arrows in you and you can walk away I'll accept your idea of weapon damage. Heck i'll settle for letting me give you one good whack in the skull with a hatchet for the sake of clarity as to how these things work. Crafting suffers from the same problems that so many current titles have. It takes 10 hides from full grown animals to make a bellows the size of a serving platter or a pair a boots? Cuz reasons I guess. As we know, once a difficult situation arises all humans suddenly need to eat 35lbs of food and drink 14 gallons of water a day, but I figure that is due to the fact that once the adventure begins you will never sleep...ever again. I desperately hoped this was finally a survival FPS with some survival in it as opposed to a extended jaunt on a 3 wheel struggle bus. Making things challenging and making things difficult are two different things and like so many games of the current generation of survival games, this game does not know the difference between the two. An enemy that moves rapidly in a evasive fashion is challenging, an opponent that is a magic bullet sponge is difficult. Hammering out a knife, tannning a hide, cutting laces and carving two paddles and them putting it together as a bellows is challenging, gathering the hides of 10 adult bullet sponges (er I mean bears) and 5 ubiquitous 'mechanical parts' found only in magic loot bags dropped by ... the loot fairies?... is difficult. I came looking for challenges so far all I have found is another try-hard struggle bus that mistakes making everything a pain in the behind for challenge. I will not give up just yet in hopes that the devs will find the road of challenge and trade in the lazy 'multiply by 10' approach tthat so many current games use as a way to 'simulate' progress. Once again I find it raw that steam gives us only the option to like or dislike a game as I whole heartedly endorce the concept behnd the game but decry the implementation.
I was fortunate enough to play this pre-early access and I was pleasantly surprised. It's obvious that the devs play survival games and are a fan of the genre. The game looks great and has a great deal of content that is found by paying attention to the quests. There are certainly some things that need to be worked out but that is why they have decided to go to early access. In my 10 hours I haven't found a single thing that is game breaking, just things that I would tweak and a few things that kind of break immersion (sounds need some love :P). I am a fan of small dev teams and indie games, and I think that these guys are doing to great job. They are responsive and the passion that they have for the game shines through. I look forward to watching this game take further shape.
The new owner looks like he knows what is going on, enough experience to clean the old code and make it run smooth, he also did post his vision for future changes the game will get. It is a nice surviving game, you need to play smart, i do advise people to buy it and who bought it before to try it again and help the owner to make it even better by sharing their own experiences.
I reccommend this game. It's EA, and it just launched a couple days ago, and the devs have been hard at work squashing whatever bugs pop up. There's not much of a premise, but most survival games aren't about storylines or lore. You start on an island with an axe, a torch, a pistol and presumeably no pants to put any of these items in. It's a mysterious island housing in perfect harmonious coexistance; chickens, pigs, cows, deer, wolves, and bears. The staples are there; HP meter, stamina, hunger, thirst. (So far no temprature system is implemented.) Noob quests to walk you through building a pickaxe, starting a base, hunting, etc. My house consists of one floor, with various crafting stations strewn about. As it stands, things like walls and ceilings are a luxury. If my house were featured on MTV's Cribs, I would point out the opulence of my floor, and talk about how it holds things off the actual ground. One day I may add steps, but even that seems like a feat of extravagance. To eat, you gotta build a bow and some arrows. Simple stuff with wood, fibers, and stone. Chickens are probably the boss creatures, because they're fast AF! I eat a lot of pork. Pigs in Hold Your Own are the staple. They don't outrun me, and I've devised a near-flawless sytem of basically humping them across the forest while they run, and putting 3 shots directly into their dirtstar. (that's their weak spot) Sometimes they do an incredible lightning dodge, but usually it's only 3 arrows. There are wierd people on the island. I think they're clones. They carry a shotgun, and patrol the woods telling any non-clones "Hey, you shouldn't be here!." Sometimes they say this to me in my yard, which, admittedly is just an unmarked perimeter around my one raised floor tile. It's kind of rude, and The Bible says clones are an abomination, so, like Buddy, maybe you shouldn't be here! The crafting is fairly robust. It's a happy medium between Subsistence, and 7D2D. You can build a nice house, but there's seemingly 1 type of structure. If you've seen any of the pictures on Steam, you know how it will look. You make a campfire to cook, and eventually unlock a stove for stat food. You can build tools and basic clothes within your inventory before crafting a forge, then a workbench. The workbench unlocks a weapons crafting table, a water collector, the stove, a loom, a saw table, which enables animal pens, and some more. It's a solid $15 purchase. I don't regret it after a couple hours like some of the similiarly priced, solo survival crafting games. If the devs continue showing it the attention that they have in the first 48 hours since launch, it will blossom into a solid contender in this already bloated arena.
By looking at my game list you can easily tell i am HUGE survival fan. I absolutly love me a good crafty survival game. I bought this game about 2 days ago and have been addicted to it. I LIKE the game but there are some cons that caused me to grow bored, sadly. I have 30 hours played on this game. Here is my opinion of the games pros and cons PROS: * great building and farming system *you can control the difficulty when starting a new game *the game has quests ! (most survivals dont) * I love the fact you can capture animals for produce *day and night cycles arent too long or too short * The AI's are a great addition to this game. It would not be as great without them. * The electricty for bases was a great idea! *You dont lose anything when you die . except some of your overall health that you can get back from eating certain foods. * you can build on the other islands * thank god you can respawn your heli if you lose it CONS: *The game ofcourse has a few glitches but nothing you cant work around without starting over. *there needs to be more base crafting content. Like different colored fences or decorative furniture. Most people that love survival games also lot to customize their bases. (plus it would give us something to do during the nights since we cant sleep) *There's no fishing :( *There's no sleeping through the night * i dont like that they split hunger into two catagories. *no teleport or respawn at different location options. Even if you save game right before a battle, if you die the game auto saves so you cant just reload a saved file to start over. *The games needs more decor on the islands. besides trees and plants, there are only a few houses on each island. some cool campsites, run down houses, rivers, waterfalls, trails ect would improve this game ALOT! We love exploring. * there needs to be a "sign" you can craft to label your loot boxes at base. Maybe even shelves to store the boxes to save space. * a map would be nice. Overall the game is pretty good but it lacks in detail. Hopefully the creators will add some more content like with the game "Rust" it's one of my favorites! the crafting system and detailed maps is amazing but just like this game, it started out very simple. I have big expectations for "hold your own"! they are really doing a fantastic job so far.
I'm playing the Beta version July 2022. It's enjoyable and the dev is fixing bugs as fast as I find them. Looking forward to seeing this game go live.
I just put 100 hr in to this game .. I loved it .. cant wait for more quest to come out .. but wait I will .. I am on day 65 lvl 73 have made every thing in the game .. it is just fun to play .. if you dont like to Grind then you may not like this game ..
A friend recommended this game for me. I wasn't aware of it's previous Dev Team abandoning it, and the new Dev Team punching out updates at regular intervals, therefore I have no pre-conceived expectations of the game. It's still DistrictWare, just a new team now. See This Thread for more info. I watched some vids from CSY, showing off the game, and all the new stuff the Dev's have added, and I was hooked. I've only got about 5 hours playtime, and so far I like what I see. Only one drawback... the game doesn't offer a Hide UI Key that so many of these type of games offer for some pretty shots. So for now, I have to edit my pics to show off the game. It's similar, yet different from most of the Building Survival games out there. To a degree, you can edit the type of game you want to play. Such as Story With/Without Tutorial & Sandbox. It's a bit grinding, but that's its drawing power for me. It doesn't rush you to complete quests, so you can move at your own pace. Day/Night Cycles is a touch too fast, but not enough to stop me from playing. If this is your kind of game, then give it a spin. 𝓐𝓼 𝓐𝓵𝔀𝓪𝔂𝓼, 𝓚𝓮𝓮𝓹 𝓞𝓷 𝓖𝓪𝓶𝓲𝓷𝓰!🐱👍
OK, so day 2 of being essentially unplayable. Not changing the thumb yet, but I can't support a game I can't play and so we are clear, my PC is more than capable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I installed the game last night. I played this morning and it was great, leading me to write the review below. Went back to play some more later today and it is now terrible. Stutters so bad it is now unplayable. I assume this is the result of the most recent patch. Please fix it before you get the same response the previous Dev got... I will leave the thumbs up in place for now, but... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I did not know about this game until recently when I watched a GameEdged play through. At first, I thought knock off of The Infected. Then I thought The Infected is a knock off of HYO. But really, they are pretty different. I have been reading up on the history and this new Dev really seems to have taken the bit and is working hard. I decided to give it a try and am I glad I did. I love it. I could go on about the graphics and the UI and such, but we each have our likes and dislikes so it may or may not work for you. If you don't pay attention, it is easy to run into a bad guy/gal or three as you wander around a corner or bash through some trees. If you do, then you have only yourself to blame.
