After various times of trying to do local multiplayer and zero controllers working I kinda gave up on this. Eventually tried it solo on the Steam Deck. The game works, it's just not very good. A simple sidescrolling action game with the same 4 levels on repeat. An attempt at an interesting respawn mechanic that doesn't work due to the odd difficulty curve where you're either steamrolling everything or getting curbstomped into a game over in seconds. Game overs that cost you upwards of 30 minutes of completely wasted time. The 4 campaigns are just the same exact slog and one final boss on repeat. This turned from an okay game to something I couldn't stand to play any longer in just a couple short hours.
Bought this game years ago in early access. Unfortunately, it hasn't changed much since then- they've added tons of content but the core gameplay remains just as buggy as ever. Now I absolutely love a lot of this game- the monsters explode into bursts of yellow goo as your rifle tears through lines of them, flying around with your jetpack feels awesome, and there's a huge variety of weapons and paraphenalia to play with. The backpack health system is really cool, and helps make the brutal kill-you-quick gameplay feel fair. The guns feel awesome. Sadly, it's extremely rough around the edges. The aiming feels very weird, as you're allowed a strangely limited number of angles that don't line up well with the animations at times. This may have gotten better over the years but it's still a bit goofy, and it's impossible to snipe at certain shallow angles. Enemies are another big problem- when they kill you this fast, it should be possible to dodge everything. Unfortunately the enemies don't like to play by the rules. Big melee guys jump around at all angles, and often come in from off the screen at breakneck speed to unreactably headbutt you into oblivion. This is made worse by their tendancy to clip through smaller chunks of terrain, meaning sometimes just when you think you're safe, they jump at you through a wall and bonk you in the face. Flying dudes are no better, as they fly in confusing loopy patterns, patterns that also cause them to boogie through walls occasionally. And all this happens in tight corridors where you often are swarmed with so many enemies that the best option is just to book it to the end and hope you survive. Thankfully the backpack health system helps a lot- when you die, you can move the backpack around and protect it's health bar for a few seconds before another marine drops in to fight. This means that despite the constant death, you won't be set back too easily. However, this doesn't excuse the unfair gameplay, as eventually all those deaths will add up. In conclusion, this game feels awesome but falls apart very quickly. It needed a bit more polish, but it never got that, sadly. If these issues were to get fixed, I would recommend this without a second thought.
5/5 There isn't a repetitive grind aspect about the campaign with the random seeds for hive jumps. I cleared it alone, only dislike I have is starting the second campaign + the difficulty increases? The achievement page states only 4.5% of players have cleared the final boss for the first campaign and 5.5% of the players cleared the first campaign. There are 3 more campaigns with the difficulty increasing.... I think a 3rd Hive Jump would be great for us but the multiplayer side is lacking heavily. .....do i start the second campaign when 96% of the people did not clear the first... with or without help.......?? ?!?!? ?!?? 4.6 hours to clear the 1st
Super fun in co-op I'd imagine But in singleplayer? Too punishing -- not the fact that you die too quick, but the penalty for death is losing too much in the stupid turn-based strategy layer that is also behind it. I thought this was dead cells in space. I thought wrong
Fun, but Repetitive for the Solo Jumper Played on my Steam Deck OLED and it runs flawlessly on Linux, even from the microSD card. The pixel art looks absolutely fantastic on that OLED screen. Hive Jump has a really solid foundation. The core run 'n gun action feels tight and satisfying, just like the professional reviews say. The "permadeath-lite" mechanic with the backpack is a cool twist that adds some nice tension. However, as a solo player, I found the repetition set in very quickly for me, it was about 1.5 hours in. The core loop of blasting through procedurally generated hives is fun at first, but the lack of enemy variety and the limited number of environmental themes (Fire, Ice, etc.) make each run start to feel too similar. I can see this being a blast in local co-op for short bursts, but playing alone, the grind becomes noticeable fast. It's a well-made game that sadly just doesn't have the long-term content to keep a single player hooked. I didn't pursue all the achievements because the core gameplay wasn't varied enough to motivate me. Verdict: A competent and good-looking co-op platformer that falls short for solo players due to repetitive gameplay.
