Interesting concept but everything feels so tedious... Navigating through the menu is the first real puzzle and what will probably make you quit instantly. You can't have a menu like that and shouldn't have to read a manual in order to try to understand it, it needs a rework. I still solved a few levels (8 or 9). While I think the concept is interesting, this is clearly not for everyone. If you're not used to Rubik's Cube type of puzzles, you'll just end up being quickly stuck at the end of the puzzles without being able to grasp the logic behind them. This is exactly the same feeling you get after completing 1-2 faces of a Rubik's Cube; if you never learned how to properly solve them, it's just impossible. The tutorial only explains what you have to do, it doesn't help you understand the more serious puzzles you have after and that's really discouraging. Unfortunately I can't recommend Icosi-do but there's a demo if you're interested in this type of puzzle games.
4/10 A puzzle where you swap colored edges of a polyhedron to get each vertex connect 4 colors. Good: - the core mechanic is interesting - there is a coop multiplayer mode So-so: - there is an option to flip Y in WASD/arrow rotations, but by default it should be reverse (the current default setting has Y like in airplane simulators and is uncomfortable) - no way to zoom in/out. I'd expect the mouse wheel to do that - while solving the puzzle, there are full-screen interruptions saying how many moves are left until the solution is reached. Instead, these should be just shown in the corner all the time - Alt+Enter works but it would be good to have window mode in the options as well - the gfx of the edges with glow are generally pleasant. But the bg is just solid color fill and looks boring and low-budget. Instead there should be some skybox or fog or something Bad: - onboarding is confusing an should be re-worked entirely. It shows just a few words at a time, using up to 8 colored blocks to create letters. I didn't even notice that the bricks actually make words and clicked through half of them in confusion. Instead it should just show instructions in full sentences/paragraphs. It's difficult to comprehend a new concept if it's split into 8 chunks, 2 words each... - some instructions are even wrong. E.g. in the top-left corner it shows that right mouse button rotates the puzzle. But in reality it's the left mouse button that rotates! And the right click brings up the menu - menu navigation is just terrible. It shows only 1 "button" at a time, full-screen. It seems the game was optimized for controllers (?) but it's almost unusable. It takes ages to navigate between options. It reminds me options in old TVs from the 90s where you'd navigate them with a TV remote, which is just ridiculous in a modern game. Instead, it should show normal dialogs with clickable buttons. The design isn't innovative, it's just tiresome. Seriously, options and basic navigation is not where a game should be innovative because convenience and familiarity are far more important than originality in these technical, mundane things. I see that the dev wanted to support all the different input devices, like a thumb stick, AR glasses etc. But the main control mode that 90% of users will use (just the mouse, cmon) is added like an afterthought - music is Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, it feels low-budget. It also seems to start playing at start of level 3 even if music is off in settings. The same track plays in a loop until you solve a level. Meaning that, while are you confused in level 1 and are fighting with the UI, you will listen to No 1 C-major piece ad nauseam - edges get grayed out even if the solution is incorrect. Instead, maybe they should become less saturated or darkened, or semi-transparent. Moving the mouse all the time to hover over them to see the color is tedious. I didn't get past level 5 because of this Overall, it's a nice idea of a game that's mired in UI and control issues. It's not optimized for the usual PC controls. And there hasn't been any playtesting done. I'd say it's an okay prototype, but should be re-implemented essentially from scratch to be playable. Just an idea I had later: this game would probably be more comfortable and casual if it were 2D. I mean, if it's a 2D flat field with a grid-like thing on it, with vertices connecting 3 or 4 edges. This would remove the need for rotations and make the puzzle far more manageable.
«icosi-do»
This is an amazing puzzle game, a labor of love and a masterpiece. You should buy it.
i truly wish that the menus and ui were reworked into something much more friendly to use, because icosi-do's puzzles are worth the hassle of learning how to navigate through them. they're really that good! if you like solving sudokus and rubik cubes, then this will most likely be the ideal fusion of the two.
Great original game. experience is enhanced greatly on Tilt Five AR glasses. Well Recommended.
dodecagono regular pretty insteresting
I received a free copy of icosi-do for the purpose of reviewing the game. The concept of icosi-do is interesting at best, but the game unfortunately both lacks tons of quality of life features and... being fun. Pretty much all reviews of the game already summarize my experiences, but I might as well post one too since I recieved a copy. Starting with the menu or simply the navigating in the game is a challenge in itself. The game comes with a manual that has a 550 words long section explaining the keybindings for the menu, and even when you've fully understood the menu it's tedious to navigate, and bloated with lots of instructions on how to use them (which are cropped away from the Steam screenshots). The menu consists of one word or button at a time built up by the same lines used in-game, which made the text very hard to read. There is also an animation for each word change, so reading the in-game tutorial or trying to find a setting in the options menu takes quite some time. The gameplay itself is buggy and a bit confusing. You have limited moves - and sometimes when you press X the puzzle dissappears and gets replaced with your remaining move count. Sometimes X shows you a hint, and sometimes it undoes your move. It's nice to have an undo button, but the fact that the button is unpredictable it doesn't really feel worth using. It's also worth noting that there is no button for redo - if you accidentally undo a move because you wanted a hint you will have to start over. There is a free demo available if you want to try the game for yourself, but unfortunately I can't even recommend doing that.
At it's core this is a constraint satisfaction game a bit like sudoku or a Rubik's cube. But in 3rd, which makes it more or less impossible to see the whole shape at once (much like a Rubik's cube). I don't think this limited visibility adds anything interesting to the genre, though. Imagine trying to solve sudoku viewed thru a small window so you can only see part of the puzzle at once. Maybe if you really like logic puzzles with extra memory demands. Or maybe I'd grow to like it, if it weren't for the 2nd big problem: The implementation isn't that great. This feels more like a tech demo than a polished game. Instead of readable instructions and menus there's lots of flying shapes that eventually form letters but in general just slow things down for the sake of looking pretty. And despite giving it a really honest go, I still can't figure out the menu system, level select, etc. Really, no joke. it's that confusing. Sorry to poop on what is clearly a labor of love. I'm sure some people will enjoy this but it's definitely not for the unmotivated, or for me.
