A Survivor like pixel game within a dungeon. This game would probably be good 10 years ago, but in 2024, there are better games to play. Also, there are questionable design choices and this is the third game in the series. If you look at their first Heroes of Loot game from 2015, the enemies and game assets look similar and were reused.
Summary/Complaints:
- Gold/experience is time limited. If you don't pick it up by a certain time, it disappears on the level. - Should be an option to mute narrator. Every time, I hear robotic "level up" from narrator, I feel annoyed. - After getting an item, a pop up appears and explain what it does. This stops the flow of the game and wastes time especially on basic items I received for the third or fourth time. - Each boss is a variation of projectiles or enemies coming towards you, dash and let your weapons do the damage. - After max upgrading a weapon, it will still appear in your level up choices. This game programming should read what you are upgrading and offer you only new choices. - The harder levels make the rooms smaller and throw more enemies at you. Some add traps on the level that you need to avoid. - Only 4 characters and 2 others must be unlocked by opening silver chests. Each starts with a different weapon such as arrow or dagger, not much variation between them. - Silver keys in your inventory not used are not converted to future currency and are wasted if you lose. - No controls menu when you pause game. They are only shown on first level and the font size is huge. - Game should be cost more than $6.99 based on content in the game.
Other comments:
- Music in game is good and varies after you leach new level of dungeon. - Has PS and Xbox controller support. - Devs are responsive to questions on their Discord. - No meta progression after completing a run. - 60 minutes to complete a full run is a long time and could be shortened to 30 or 45 minutes.
Conclusion:
There is low skill expression in this game and spamming dash is how you win on harder levels. As mentioned above, there are many design choices I disagree with. The game play loop is not satisfying or fun and adding meta progression to the game would make it more interesting.
Its a cute concept, but it feels extremely simplistic to play. There is no attack button, but rather the game has you apply a weapon to one of 8 directions, and it'll automatically fire in that direction so long as enemies are in range. For the most part I've seen the vast majority of weapons fire off in a straight line and if theres any differences between the majority I've not noticed. Enemies spawn in and in the chaos of all of the projectiles, and loot that spawns when you kill them, you might not even notice and may walk into them taking cheap damage. All of that I could forgive honestly. The worst part however is the bosses. Because you have no real control of your character beyond dodging, the gigantic health bars just feel like a slog to work through. Even THAT would have been fine had the final boss not had like 7 different phases, all of which were almost entirely identical to the last. After beating the game I honestly have no urge to play more, since every run I did felt kinda bland and grindy. I'd skip this and find something more fun.
An enjoyable mix of Binding of Isaac + Vampire Survivors. Plays very good on the Steam Deck, uses almost no battery at all. I'm launching it for 10 minutes of fun, then an hour later i wonder where the time went.
From a couple of runs I've tried so far, it looks like a nice blend of Binding of Isaac and Vampire Survivors! The ability to choose which direction each new weapon is facing adds a little bit of tactical decisions. Bosses are a little bit easy, but this is compensated by the complete chaos when there are too much enemies on the screen :D
Boring and simple
Chaotic at times, especially at later levels, but I wouldnt have it any other way. I enjoyed the weapon leveling system and ability to combine different types of weapons to make more powerful weapons. The rogue like aspect of things is done well. The gameplay has that let me just do one more hook. All of the release bugs I first encountered have been fixed and the added challenges are nice. I would recommend this game if you're a fan of vampire survivor or rogue likes.
After 7+ hrs I finally beat the game with the Valkyrie, as a whole I really enjoy this game & you can make some amazing builds, But my only complaint is you need to buff the archer big time. No matter how you build him, he is weak sauce compared to the other classes. Great freaking game.
Fun little game. Could describe it as rogue lite dungeon crawler, with arena shooter mixed in. On top of that there's some arcade feel due the Gauntlet influences. Being able to mount different weapon to eight different directions is nice feature. You can sometimes find also extra features to the weapons like being able to grab loot or getting health on kills. There are also passive and active items, which do have some useful features. Not too difficult, so most people should be able to finish it. There's even cheats under the extras menu to make the game even easier. Things could be even better though. Some bosses don't really encourage to try new tactics (though latest update already have bosses that are step in right direction). Also in full run, you probably will see same ones few times. Music getting more aggressive and sinister based on dungeon is nice though. There's could be bit more of it as in one full run of the game, you will spend quite lot of time with one song. Worth trying out, even when the game is relatively short.
What a fun game and weapon placement slots make for some strategy opportunity on the fly. :) The mobs spawning on you while navigating while near death can be irritating. Looking forward to seeing what else I can find and explore! JOYOUS PIXEL SLAUGHTER in bite sized chunks of victorious debris fields! The loot and coins pickup sounds need some randomizations and lower pitches.
Absolute blast to play this and as you gain new abilities, it keeps the game fresh and exciting to play. The bosses are fun and bit over the top but that's fun to play and good thing in my opinion. I definitely recommend this. Still getting content updates, great game
