Her Story

Amazing game. No spoilers in this review and I suggest avoiding spoilers. While I would like to say that I certainly recommend getting this game, I just came back here for the most part to say that the actress playing "her", Viva Seifert, is absolutely brilliant. Her speech and acting made this game extremely enjoyable and somewhat addicting to play, as I kept rolling her entire story in my head for the past few days, the way it is spoken by her. During the playthrough I kept thinking the whole time that she captured the mystery of it well and frankly on the surface it just feels like the entire game is essentially Viva Seifert. But then, I think about how much thought and craftsmanship goes into designing a game like this one, especially more than a decade ago. Very interesting game, I wish I was able to try passing "Her Story" in one evening with another person but then I am not sure how that would have worked out with sometimes needing to rewind clips and creating tags, etc. Anyways, 10/10 -- absolutely recommend!

This narrative approach proves remarkably effective: before long, one finds oneself diving ever deeper into the investigation, constantly testing new keywords and connections. The game places full trust in the player’s curiosity and interpretative skills, refusing to guide them by the hand. Overall, Her Story demonstrates just how powerful narrative design can be when it relinquishes control and entrusts the player with constructing meaning and judging guilt. Insgesamt zeigt Her Story eindrucksvoll, wie stark narratives Design wirken kann, wenn es Kontrolle abgibt und den Spielenden die Verantwortung für Sinn und Schuldfrage überlässt. Wer bereit ist, sich auf diese Form des analytischen Storytellings einzulassen wird mit einer ungewöhnlich Spielerfahrung belohnt.
