STORY
Before the old times, ancient gods once held the eternal responsibility of sending the good to heaven and the wicked to hell. After growing tired of everlasting life and having grown older than time itself, the gods built a gigantic monolithic machine.
This titan of a device was to take on their endless burden of soul sorting and allow them to die.
This "Hellscreen" machine was soon constructed. But there was no rejoicing, only relief. In a flash, the old gods were gone, lost to time.
After millennia of sorting countless souls, the machine begins to malfunction and displaces you.
You are taken from the real world at the point of your death and deposited in the Hellscreen realm, instead of the peaceful afterlife you deserve.
You are given an inhuman form and are called upon to destroy the machine and its infernal biome.
It must be stopped from dismantling the fabric of all existence and destroying all reality and only you can stop it and reset order.
Once this is done then perhaps you can return to your eternal resting spot.

Jamie has created an amazing and unique FPS experience! Using a limited palette to weave masterful and abstract level design, wrapping it up in delicious sound and music with a symphony of bullets, this game is sure to please any retro-style FPS enthusiast! I've been waiting for this game since Realms Deep 2020 and the wait was absolutely WORTH IT. Pick this up now!
this game has a lot of promise, as a fun boomer-style shooter with a hook (rear-view mirror). tl;dr: pros: super cool artstyle, exciting "metroidvania"-style FPS which there aren't enough of. cons: could have a bit more music variety, weapon-type variety, enemy projectile variety, movement upgrade variety. e.g., i wanted a melee weapon but i haven't seen one yet... i'm not recommending it at the current price point due to the above cons, but it's still a fun, stylistic shooter. i have a longer review on the discussion board, with gameplay suggestions here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1410090/discussions/0/3790380616231003504/ i originally complained about lack of save functionality, but i think i probably accidentally deleted my save ("Clear save data" is a prominent button on the main screen) or hit a rare bug, because i'm able to keep the major weapons and soul vessels on my second run.
It's incredibly difficult to encapsulate HELLSCREEN into a few words. Alien, hostile, uninviting, foreign, prismatic. A first person shooter that defies a straightforward description or summary. In it's current state there are a lot of glitches and flaws that need ironing out, which the dev is clearly hard at work on. But the initial burst of confused flailing is quickly followed by confident gameplay and astonishing visuals. While the story is opaque at best, it hints at something cosmic and horrifying, a dread I haven't felt since Scorn. I have absolutely no idea how I feel about Hellscreen, but I do know that there is still another weapon I need to collect, a whole map I haven't completed, and the promise of a second episode with even greater challenge. If anything I can say that is critical, I would say the difficulty of combat could be raised just a touch, but outside of that, this is a wonder to behold. I don't know where it's going, but I will follow, mesmerized, engaged, and embracing the fate of damned. I recommend that you join us.
Why is this game not finished? There should be a limit on E.A. games and anything over 2 years should be removed from the steam store period. This game is definitely NEVER going to be finished. It's cool, but it's tedious, hard to play because of the color palate, and has very little to offer. STOP MAKING EARLY ACCESS GAMES THAT TAKE 5 YEARS TO COMPLETE.
Metroidvania boomer shooter format, really great visuals, and the rearview mirror mechanic has some really surprising and cool moments to it, lots of well hidden secrets!
I wish there was a mixed button. Because while I didn't enjoy my play through of the first level I can see how it may become fun when I have a better time to try it further. It just seemed very obtuse and hard to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing in order to progress. Yes I get "Shoot things and run around". I have played a few boomer shooters, but this was just hard to follow. I'll try it again, but so far I can't recommend it.
Garbage. Moves like crap, at 24-30 fps... outstanding...
So I really regret not getting this sooner. I played the demo and thought it was amazing. The mechanic of shooting behind you with a "rear view mirror" is so unique. The music is fantastic, and the color palette is unlike anything I've seen. The game is a fast paced shooter that deserves your attention. However I did not buy it on release... I regret not doing so because I guess the dev cannot support themselves off of this game. They even released VaporWave Pinball to hopefully bring in some extra cash for continuing this game. Unfortunately he could not stay afloat. The roadmap for the game is dead and the dev cannot make ends meet. That kills me, this is such a cool project and I only wrote this review to basically say, please support this developer. They are very skilled, and decided not to make just another shooter. Rather a game with it's own unique mechanics. I think that shows vast creativity. To the dev I am sorry you could not make it work. I should have given my support earlier. You're talented and should not give up on making games. All in all this a great game that you should try and support if possible.
gives me a headache. the good kind
