Bigass levels for a bigass orcbabe. Feels good to shoot cultists.
Demonology simulator.
As a huge fan of Doom mods, I don't think anything could have really prepped me for how good this game would end up being. It's built off a doom source port, but you would hardly know it as it feels very much like it's own thing from beginning to end. The added item system and in depth levels very Build Engine-esque as levels typically have quite a bit of depth. What helps you explore all of that is the heavy emphasis the game puts on puzzles, especially in Bloodrite where you are solving long multi level puzzles to progress. To me, it sometimes works and sometimes they can feel a bit obtuse, but your mileage will vary based on what order you do things in. Though you may be slowed down by a bit by the puzzles, the combat will keep you moving forward as it is frantic and deadly. You truly cannot take this game without constant movement, you will die almost instantly and large encounters are a constant juggle. The weapons help with that as well as there aren't a ton of options, but you do feel the use case for all of them as you play. Truly though, this is a fantastic modern game made in the style of a boomer shooter and stands as one of the best of the modern-era. It has an extremely cohesive vision for what it wants to be and I think it nails it.

Its Good
I love the game but make sure to have a walkthrough handy. I recommend the one here https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2601718125.
Hedon feels like an amalgamation of all the other fantastic games like Dusk, Doom, Hexen, and even Thief. It takes only the best parts of each game, and mashes them together into a truly magnificent dish. The ginormous scope of Hedon, and especially Bloodrite, blew me away. Each and every single level is sprawling, and filled with detail. These levels are truly massive, taking anywhere between 40-60 minutes to finish. But there are also several hub levels, which take hours to complete. All of them were intricately crafted, containing well thought out puzzles, and or key hunts. Hedon also features a boatload of secrets to find, which were surprisingly fun to look for. It's not your standard wall humping (most of the time), but rather cleverly hidden switches, hidden in plain sight places, and jump puzzles. I personally loved looking for them. They also happen to reward you with some horny drawings, if you want an incentive, hehe. Gunplay feels great (it's built in GZDoom, duh), and the arsenal does not disappoint, either. Each weapon is themed around the technologies available in the world. From axes to potion launchers, each weapon has an alternate firing mode, bringing more versatility to every gunfight. Not only that, but the game also features an alternate difficulty mode with an entirely different set of weapons, which are mostly melee. Adding more replayability aside from your standard difficulty levels. As for the story, it is suprisingly compelling. You can learn a lot about the world and its inhabitants through notes scattered throughout the levels, or by talking to NPCs. By the end I felt like I was a part of the Iron Division, knowing many of the other members that joined me on the battlefield. It honestly felt quite epic during the climax of the story, and I don't use that word often. I also have to mention the soundtrack, because it kicks some serious ass. I'm not just talking about songs playing during high intensity firefights, but also the ambient music. Kranioutopos being my definite favourite out of all of them. Seriously, give it a listen on Youtube, it's fantastic. Everything simply fell into place, where I can say that this game is almost perfect. I say almost perfect, because sometimes the puzzles can be a bit too cryptic, leading you to getting stuck for some time (or use a walkthrough, but eh). That is the only major criticism I have, along with some minor gripes that are not worth mentioning. Clearly the dev (and everyone else) poured their heart and soul into this project, and it rocks! Like really, REALLY hard. It's one of THE best boomshoots that I've personally played thus far, and given that this is a GZDoom indie project is truly impressive, considering that it manages to find its own identity. It's not Doom. It's HEDON. 9/10

This game is absolutely phenomenal. Especially in the artistic merits of the game - and especially the world design. The mechanics of the game are also really solid, but do have their flaws. The 3 main flaws that arose to me were - ammo management, consumables and difficulty - they are all kind of dependent on each other though. I finished the game 3 times on 3 different difficulties yet I didn't feel challenged most of the time. That is the first reason, why I almost never felt compelled to use the consumables. The second reason is that I never learned the keybinds for consumables (because there are so many of them) and the inventory UX is pretty bad (because there are so many of them). As for the ammo management, I just think the game gives you way too much ammo - especially for the strong weapons. Lastly, I think the crossbow and the acid GL do pretty much the same thing, so you just have 2 explosive weapons that mechanically overlap. I like them both though NGL. Still, I consider this one of the best games I ever played.
