About
Heard of the Story? is a cosy medieval city-building simulation game with intelligent and quirky villagers who think, reason, and tell their own unique tales.
The game is about forging your own medieval town, community, and relationships with procedural characters that really feel alive, self-aware, and grounded in your world. Embark on an adventure with them to transform a few sticks and pebbles into a beautiful prospering town from the ground up. Alternatively, simple sit back and watch as your townsfolk discover their passions, spread rumours, or divulge captivating stories with you and between each other.
Explore the landscape to find and gather the resources you need in order to build your town. Craft your way up to an expert, perhaps you can be their blacksmith?
Develop a town organically by architecting your roads or structures without a grid. Beautify the surroundings with decorations whilst your villagers spice up their gardens.
Each building changes the life of your villagers one step at a time. Could the Lion & Crow be your friend's next favourite tavern? Or the Chiselled Bellows the smithy they discover themselves in?
Strengthen your reputation by constructing the right amenities, enough fields and accommodation, and entice foreigners to join - grow without a limit!

Villagers are autonomous and independent. Apart from starting new construction projects, they can do anything you can. Each has their own interests, goals, achievements, needs, and traits.
Talk to villagers to discover their lore, (sometimes) get helpful advice, or learn about their conspiracy theories. Your learnings are jotted down in your journal as you uncover more.
Each interaction they have with the world forms an experience which shapes their personality. Reveal how they changed and evolved through listening to their quirky stories.
Deepen the mutual bond by helping them with their troubles. Or don't, and tell them they look ugly instead - we won't judge! (but villagers may)

Cooperate with your townsfolk as they help construct new buildings or trade with them to get the items you need.
Watch villagers specialise into different skilled crafts like carpentry or horticulture. Unlock your society's potential by making sure they have all the tools they need to prosper.
When your collective skills don't cut it, merchants and markets can assist you by bringing what you need - at a price. Be careful not to blow your savings on luxurious goods!
Just like you, villagers can talk to each other, build their own relationships (or start their own beef), and make their own exchanges. As they pass on information, they form an emergent interconnected team.

Each map is randomly generated making every playthrough even more unique. Whether you want to build in a valley or a flatland, in a forest or the mountains, the choice is yours!
Find cute, scottish-highland inspired cows loitering around different corners and draw them into your barns to tame them.
World details are also unique to each world, with each having its own regions, towns, family histories. Perhaps you’ll find your rival's sibling joining you as you expand the town.
As time passes, the sun will rise, the stars will show, and the seasons will change. Witness colours and atmosphere shift around you as spring gradually gives way to winter.

Keep warm with a fireplace during winter, or find a colourful place to frolic amidst long grass and arrays of countless flowers during summer. This game is designed to be cosy and stress-free; there are no timed tasks, no harsh penalties, and no combat putting your town at risk. You can challenge yourself to grow a huge town, or play at your own pace and stick to a small cottagecore village, with a few friendly faces.

This game truly sets itself apart with its engaging AI-driven storytelling. As you immerse yourself in the village life, you'll witness AI characters not just existing, but evolving. Their unique quirks, house decorations, and changing interests create a dynamic world that feels alive and ever-changing. It's a rare treat to see such depth in character evolution, making each playthrough a unique experience. I won't lie, while the foundation is impressive, there are areas that need refinement, from clearer interaction feedback to certain game mechanics. Some bugs and underdeveloped systems are present, as well as obvious shortcomings in the camera control. The true charm of this game lies in its potential. With the right attention to detail and further development, it could evolve into a gaming masterpiece. I sincerely hope the developer harnesses this potential and pushes forward, refining and expanding upon what's already a promising start. For those considering giving it a try, treat it as an alpha, but one with a bright future. Support the game, provide feedback, and let's help shape this gem!
I am Dobby the Anti Linen Lord, and This is My Review Greetings from down under! I'm Dobby, the anti Linen Lord, and I've spent the past 120 hours immersed in "Heard of the Story?" Bugs and all, this game has been a true delight. The active Discord community, coupled with Shasaur's dedication to bug fixing, has made the journey all the more enjoyable. I've pushed my PC to the limits, running at max settings, and currently have a bustling village with 60 villagers (possibly a record?). Graphics and World-Building: Initial negative reviews mentioned a lack of realism in the graphics, but I must say I find them rather cute and charming. The world here evolves at your own pace, building along with your efforts. As you complete tasks for villagers, forging bonds, they reveal captivating stories that further enrich the experience. Game-play and Village Development: Simplicity defines the game-play: gather resources, lay down building plans, and decide whether to be the builder or delegate tasks to your villagers. It may be straightforward, but the satisfaction it brings is immeasurable. Interaction and Relationships: While initiating conversations with villagers occasionally has a slight delay, I'm optimistic that this will improve in future updates. Variability in villager requests could enhance the experience; at one point, 15 of my villagers clamoured for bread before I even knew the recipe. Still, these quirks didn't deter me, as my focus is primarily on the joy of building and witnessing villagers engaging with each other. Crafting and Specialisation: The crafting system, rooted in "inspiration," is an original concept. As you engage in activities like woodcutting, you gradually unlock new crafting possibilities, adding a touch of realism to your journey. I've affectionately dubbed myself the "anti linen lord" as my character stubbornly refuses to learn linen-making, despite abundant flax. Fortunately, my fellow villagers have picked up the slack, specialising in tapestry and crafting flags for my watchtowers. Conclusion: Backing the Kickstarter project in April was a decision I'll forever cherish, for "Heard of the Story?" has been nothing short of a gaming masterpiece. Bugs notwithstanding, every moment has been a testament to the game's brilliance. I eagerly await the updates and enhancements Shasaur has planned. Without a doubt, "Heard of the Story?" earns the title of my Game of the Year for 2023. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking an enchanting and immersive gaming experience. Don't miss out on this gem.
This game is super fun and relaxing so far. While I might have a few complaints here and there, it's all relative to the fact the game is still in early access and not fully developed. I love the concept behind this, and I am so excited to see where the game goes - based on the road map, there are a lot or potential good things in store :).
I really hope this doesn't get abandoned. Not many AI games out there. Recommended if your sick of the regular AI games. *UPDATE* The NPC AI is very impressive. I commend Shasaur for their continued work and effort on this game. Please don't give up on it. This game is fire. Don't sleep on it! PLS ADD COMBAT!
The developer has to make sure the start up process doesn't get picked up by anti virus software as suspicious, since I had to manually go in and take files out of quarantine to just start up a new save. And the game has quite a few small annoyances such as Esc not closing any menu I have opened (why is that not ALWAYS the case?) BUT it's an interesting concept which I saw when it was in the crowdfunding stage, I just wish I could be more hands off. It feels like I have to control a lot..when I assumed part of the charm would be to just be able to watch the others create their own stories. It would also be great if the little guys could learn crafting recipes from each other. Like you're asking for a crown which you're already wearing, but I don't know how to make it. Why can't the guy tell me how to make it? I recommend it mainly because I see that the creator is very actively updating it.
Haven't delved into this too much but want to leave a review mostly about the scope and concept that is clearly underlying this game. At its core the dev here seems to really understand and be committed to crafting something in which the player is not unique from the AIs - this has sort of become a favorite type of game of mine, and unfortunately it's pretty rare to find one so committed to the purity of the concept. If you're also into this type of game, I think this is worth a buy, or at the very least a follow, to support the dev and projects like this. The foundation is here, and I'm hopeful the end product will deliver on the promise.
Very cute game so far! Just launched into early access a couple days ago, and I've played a couple sessions. I had a couple bugs, but nothing game breaking. The developer is super responsive on discord and implements bug fixes and suggestions quickly into the game! I can tell the developer is super passionate about this game, and it makes me very excited to see how this game grows in the future. I can see how the crafting system can expand in the future, as well as the kinds of buildings and relationships with villagers. If you want to support a solo developer with a game that could grow into so much more, I definitely recommend purchasing in early access. I've enjoyed all that I've played so far :D
Heard of the Story is a visually charming game with a great concept, villagers help construct buildings, making for a relaxing village building and crafting experience. The graphics are pleasant, and the idea behind the game is engaging. However, the player movement feels a bit slow, and the game could use some improvements. A more structured tutorial would help new players get started, though I personally enjoy diving in and figuring things out on my own. Overall, it's a relaxing experience, I’d recommend this game to anyone who enjoys village building and crafting games. With regular updates, I plan to keep playing and look forward to seeing how it evolves. Rating: 4/5
Nice little game, pretty unique and well polished for its early state, the only thing missing is more content, such as more buildings and the likes wich are coming updates by updates, but otherwise what's promised as the ground idea for the game is here and functional
A game like Kingdoms(By Oreol) and coming along nicely. A little slower than Kingdoms(By Oreol), and a little slower than I like, plus it is somewhat harder to determine how to do or get things; but seemingly a good work in progress and the developer seems responsive to feedback. The pacing and payoffs and info could be better as it is a little trial and error but I am still having fun discovering things when it is not a pain to do so and when it is I ask around and find out how to proceed and the community seems nice. The AI NPC Stuff is interesting and better than I have seen in alot of places, needs work, but a nice touch so far.
